  • S/V Kinetic simulates loss of rudder under sail by locking rudder amidships. After balancing the sails to hold course, we deployed a makeshift drogue off the stern, controlled by lines to the primary winches. By moving the drogue to the side of the boat, the drag created turns the boat.

Genius. I have been a mariner 55 years and never thought about such a common sense solution. about the ever constant possibility of loosing steerage. Of it would have to be improvised to suit the vessel and conditions at the time , yet the general principle logically would work.

Nice! If you attach a short string to the bucket between the two long strings and wrap a string around the top of the bucket, you will reduce the load on the bucket and it will last longer

Would have been good to see the wake behind you and so the steerage effect

You know, and I know this had an effect on steering the boat to starboard, would have been nice to actually seeing te boats wake and or compass to demonstrate the turn and rate of turn.

I lived the experience of a broken rudder cable, in the middle of the night the wheel suddenly was held for a second which was enough to counteract with the pilot, and the cable under broke. Luckily the boat model Beneteau at the time had a well with an axe to use a prepared safety rudder stick, but I held that thing throughout the night to Huahine. Ever since I juge a boat by its handling of rudder going wrong or ....falling off, solutions need to be thought well before departure.

usually, when you lose steering, the rudder does not lock itself amidships. Try emergency steering with rudder left loose as when the rope or chain breaks.

I have a 5 m dinghy, well balanced, and I can easily steer it by adjusting the mainsail and jib. Furthermore, wouldn't your system be more effective with a floating anchor, which is often found in the equipment of a cruiser? good luck...

Balancing the sail at the same time. I actually used this technique on a dinghy with a life jacket, just to get back to shore safely

With the orca attacks at Gibraltar, this would be a good thing to try before sailing trough there.

does the rudder usually lock in place when steering is lost on a sailboat.. or would it be turning freely against the current.. back and forth...????????????

    • @KineticSailing

That depends on the steering mechanism - a cable could jam the rudder in a fixed position, or break and let it swing. Or, the rudder could break off entirely.

extending on @Leifur Thor ‘s idea - use a floor board to be the emergency rudder blade, connect it to the bathing ladder on one the front side and attach the lines on the rear end as demonstrated in the video. Non of us hopefully will have to test this, but who knows. In this year’s ARC a boat had to be given up for a broken rudder in mid of the Atlantic.

Saw someone lose his rudder crossing pacific ocean. And he was using this.
The sail was slow but he arrived to his destination. The good thing is. He didnt know what to do at first and some communcation radio or what not helped him.
    For got his channel.
