Dear Rosie, Having come back from Russia recently, followed by a fortnight quarantine in my study at home, I decided to embark on the 1000-page epic novel ‘The Eighth Life.’ It was recommended to me by my bibliophile brother-in-law. Although I read the reviews when the book came out a year ago, a personal recommendation came last summer and recommendations tend to be more persuasive in my case. In brief, the novel consumed me totally, to the extent that I gave up most of my less urgent commitments to read on and on. In your interview Nino Haratishvili makes it clear that writing of the novel came to her naturally, flowing on to the page effortlessly and freely. And it is precisely this current of free-flowing narration that sweeps away the reader compelling him or her to follow the protagonists on their epic journey. The current is so strong that it is impossible to stop. The timescale of the novel is breath-taking and the lives of the characters who populate the Red Century come in all their diversity and contradictions. They are members of one Georgian family torn apart by the turbulent events of the 20th century, by political and family loyalties, then reunited and torn apart again. The author is an onlooker who describes the fortitude, defiance, fallibility, weakness, sins and virtues of her protagonists, women in the majority, through their deeds and attitudes towards each other. No matter how frustrating or vexing the author’s objectivity may appear to the reader, she never judges her characters, never condemns them for their inadequacies and never punishes for the cruelty they inflict on their own members of the family. But then this is the family matter and everything must stay in the family. In the closing chapters, the narrator’s (not the author’s) compassion and pity for Kostya, the despotic patriarch, who through his blind obsessive loyalty to the regime crushes and destroys the lives of the women, his own flesh and blood, may infuriate the reader and yet it seems to be understandably sincere. In the end the regime he served is crushed and the zealot is reduced to a pitiful caricature of his former self. I lived almost half of my life in the Red Country and the Red Century, in the Caucasus as it happens, and revelled in the detail and accuracy of the time and place the author described.
