      In past employment, I generally had no issues learning new software. I often wrote instructions for using company programs. I am SO frustrated with setting up 1Password. IMHO the tutorials are too fast and not enough "visual" examples. I've has a free account for just a few days. If I can't figure this out, I won't be getting a paid account. ugghhhhh

      Start off by seeing if slowing down the guy’s rate of speech is helpful. On the screen where you see the guy talking, look at the upper right cornet. You’ll see a cogwheel looking symbol, aka “icon”. That is the settings. Click on this cogwheel. You’ll see options for the rate of speech. It is defaulted to “normal”. You can slow it down to 0.75 speed, or 0.5 speed, etc. that will slow down how fast the guy talks. Then, you can take notes on paper. Hope this helps.

    Very, very good. Unlike most you produced a video that gave clear directions towards setting the different Apps up.
    This can be very confusing, in my opinion at least. And I am by no means a beginner in the online world. By the time the video is over we are also relatively familiar with the interface and feeling more at home with 1Password.
    Also, what really annoys me, is that in most cases it comes across strongly that the only objective of the videos that most creators make is to hopefully make money. As their speaking at 100 mile an hour and it seems like they just want to get it over with.
    It feels that that’s not the case with you Jason and you really want to make the process clearly understood. That that is your main objective.
    Anyway, without watching your video I know I would have struggled to set it all up.
    Thanks for that.

    • @teachmecyber
      @teachmecyber  Рік тому

      It's possible but unlikely. The attacker would need to get both the master password AND the secret key (which is less likely to happen). Add MFA to your account and you're even better protected. So while it's never 100% secure, with 1Password you are well protected.

You certainly know your stuff but you are assuming a level of understanding that we beginners don't have. Many terms and abbreviations might as well be in a foreign language. Wait a minute - this is a foreign language! Spouse and I will try to set up 1Password and perhaps come back here with questions as they come up. One question: What exactly is the "secret key" - is it yet another password to remember or something else?

    @Jason Rebholz very good job! Im curious when making the security key is it better to use a password generator offline and just copy and paste in a phrase or a bunch of random numbers and letters? Or make up my own? Also I wanted to know if you can take out passwords without it deleting the account for that password. Lets say i want 1password holding everything but not my gaming account and password if i dont want lets say that or a instagram account in there can i take it out without it deleting my account. Is it easy to basically import export One password at a time not all of them. So i can basically add only what i want.

    I’m just getting started and am at the point to export my passwords into 1Password and first get this message. I have a Mac and use Time Machine with an external hard drive. I assume long as that is not plugged in, I’m fine but, is there any other backup software I need to be concerned about? Once imported, and change the vulnerable passwords, will they automatically change on my iPad and iPhone? I did install 1Password on both those devices as well.

    • @teachmecyber
      @teachmecyber  Рік тому

      You should be fine as long as you don't have your backup drive plugged in. Just remember to empty your trash.
      As long as you installed 1Password on your other devices, it will all sync together. So you can reset on your Mac and it will work on your iPad and your iPhone.

When you discussed 2FA you over looked that some people (i.e., me) do not have an 2FA app. I skipped this as it is too much to learn right now. I would like 2FA. Can 1Password use SMS for 2FA? Lastly, I need understand the needed for desktop app? That was not clear. I found out that 1Password would not work without this installed and always open. No need to change your passwords after you switch. You'll just need to export your passwords from your existing password manager and then import it into 1Password (be sure to delete the password export when you're done!)
      After you import them, I would take a look at WatchTower. If there are any weak passwords or ones that have been identified in another data breach, I would just change those as a precautionary measure.

    If you allow 1Password to handle 2FA automagically, doesn't that negate the whole point? Whats the point of turning it on if 1Pass will handle it. Anyone that gets your phone and the account is logged in essentially has the keys to the kingdom... why make it easier for them? Its another layer of security removed. Right?

    Thank you for the great video. I am finally deciding to go with a PM and 1password looks to be the one, at present. The one place where I was hoping to get some clarification in the video, you started but then veered off. Is it possible to change passwords for a site FROM WITHIN 1password? In the vid, you did this with the Coursera site, and made it a really bad choice. However, you didn't really talk about that after that point. Let's say it wasn't a poor choice, but a randomly generated strong password. Now, the next time I go to Coursera, 1password has the wrong credentials, does it not? This was a huge confusion to me as to how or why you would edit the password from inside 1password. Can you explain for me? It would be great if there was a magic button that could go through my hundreds of passwords and auto-change them but I'd settle for even one at a time, if I could do it from the 1password application or web page. Thanks!

    • @teachmecyber
      @teachmecyber  10 місяців тому

      Unfortunately you can't change it from within the password manager. When you change you password on a site, it will prompt a new password and ask if you want to update the existing one or create a new entry in the password manager.

    This seems generally well-presented, but as I haven't started to use 1Password yet I have several questions which are not obvious. For example, if I set up a 25 character password and I get logged out after a time-out, do I have to enter all 25 characters next time I want to log into a web site? And how long is the secret key? If 4-6 characters I can remember it, but if longer I cannot. So where do I store it? And then there is a reference to "a favourite authenticator". I don't know what this means. I don't have such a thing. Indeed some applications, including credit card transaction, sent a code to my 'phone, but does this mean something different? IS this "authenticator" an application on a device, or simply a mobile phone number?
    What is worrying is that I have (very) many years of computer experience. One of my friends invented WWW and I started computing by written a convolution integral in IBM 360 machine code! Thus, what people with no technical background will make of all this I can't imagine - but see comment below!

      @@teachmecyber Thanks for the quick reply. Not to be ungrateful and I can only point to my own lack of knowledge, but I miss a little more information about how a password manager works in general. Do you have to have an app on each device, how is it handled on a daily basis, is it easy to integrate with the normal apps you use, what about emails and what about Apps outside the US? etc.
      It's probably easy for some, but if you don't know anything about it, you probably start somewhere else. That's just what I meant. Otherwise, thanks for a good video.

    On a new website, it suggests a paaword to use - how does it know the rules of that password? Length, upper & lower case, symbols, numbers. Or do just try the suggestion and if rejected confirgure 1Password password generator?

      It won't know the rules the website is requiring. I default to trying to suggestion (which will follow best practices) and if necessary tweak it if the website rejects it. Thankfully that only happens once in a while.

    I love the idea too, and you are an excellent videographer; but as a senior not brought up on computers, I still have difficulty getting how to do this. Examples of where I got stuck: "pass phrase"- had to stop and look it up. "MFA" - What's that? Ahh, multi factor authentication. "Hardware key" - Show us what one looks like and how you actually use it. (I saw you press something off camera.) I began to get lost on "Install 1Password on Windows" section. I didn't understand which passwords you were referring to at times--the ones I already had or the new 1p password. It was a little too fast for me as I am unfamiliar with where you are clicking. I'm going to keep re-listening to this over again though until I get it. None of my remarks are meant to downplay the excellence of your video. I'm sure the vast majority of people watching this had no problems whatsoever. Just trying to explain where us older folks get hung up. Thank you so much for making this video!

      MFA stands for multi-factor authentication. It is a secondary way to prove that it is you who is logging in. There are various methods for this. It includes a mobile app on your phone that has a rotating six digit code or text messages to your phone (less secure).

    There's no way to customize a new password suggested by 1Password when you're registering on a website. You have to use what it suggests. I hope they add the ability to customize.

    • @teachmecyber
      @teachmecyber  Рік тому

      It can be a bit clunky. You can preset specifics in the password generator and select it to be used as the default for suggestions. Not perfect, but it's a workaround if you're looking to modify.

    The graphic interface of this app absolutely sucks! It makes no sense. The "Home" portion is super confusing and doesn't show my vaults, which is where I would start when I log in to access my items. You have to click on "Items" to access your "vaults". Maybe it's because it's all new to me but it has been a real pain in the ass to get set up correctly and learn how to navigate.

      It tries to optimize so it goes to the password you need based on the website (assuming you have autofill enabled). You can change the starting point by going to settings and selecting "Appearances and Shortcuts". Then change where it loads to.

    • @teachmecyber

      Both are great options! I like Bitwarden because of the advanced configurations you can do (as well as the ability to host your own instance).
      I find that 1Password is very good for less technical users (e.g. it's something I would recommend to my family who doesn't care about better settings).
      For Bitwarden, with changing the KDR to Argon2id, you're in a great position for keeping your passwords secure. You don't have the ability in 1password to change the KDF.
