People always ask why they confessed ... I think in today’s society its hard to grasp how gruesome and painful torture really is. They knew if they didn’t confess they would be tortured until they did or they would be hanged for not confessing. If you confessed you got at least a temporary reprieve and for many eventually released. It was better to confess. Then people make fun of the people for believing it. If you lived then you would believe it too. Personally id like to go back and smack the crap out of those girls because we all know they were faking it now .
Agreed they probably had guilty consciences and those led to the “fits” but not wanting to get caught made up lies to save themselves but then eventually believed themselves. Tituba knew what went on too, but instead of being honest (probably since no one would believe her due to her low status) made up the confession to save the girls and herself
