With the 'Inspired By Gibson' range of guitars, Epiphone have given their old Les Paul Standard range a bit of an overhaul, so they’re now available in either 50’s or 60’s models, with each guitar offering period correct specifications including vintage style hardware and finishes, plus upgraded electronics including a pair of Probucker pickups, and this all adds up to give the new Epiphone Les Paul Standard the more authentic feel, sound and look of their bigger brothers from Gibson, but still at that much more affordable Epiphone price.
As you’d expect from a Les Paul, this guitar features a traditional 24.75” scale length, a solid Mahogany body with a AA Flame maple top which looks pretty stunning under those burst finishes, and glued in Mahogany neck, and all of this combines to deliver tons of resonance and sustain.
Being a 1960’s inspired model, the neck features a slim taper C shape profile, so it feels a little less chunky than the more rounded medium C profile found on the 50’s Les Pauls, which when combined with the 22 medium jumbo frets and bound, rolled fingerboard edging means these necks feel much closer to that of a real Gibson than previous Epiphones did.
Other era-specific features for the 60’s Les Paul Standard include a set of Grover 18 to 1 rotomatic tuners, as opposed to the vintage deluxe machineheads found on the 50’s models, and a set of 60’s style gold control knobs with nickel plated dial pointers.
For these inspired by Gibson guitars, Epiphone have also tweaked the design of the headstock, something they’re calling the Kalamazoo shape, and this looks much closer to the classic Gibson open-book style headstock than older Epiphone headstocks did, it may only be a minor upgrade, but when combined with the bell shaped truss rod cover and iconic Les Paul italics, it does help add to that new level of authenticity.
Looking at the rest of the hardware, there’s an upgraded LockTone ABR Tune-O-Matic bridge with a stop bar tailpiece, and back up on the headstock, a Graphtech NuBone nut to help with resonance and tuning stability.
In terms of electronics, the 60’s Les Paul Standard is fitted with a pair of Probucker humbuckers, which are a huge improvement over the pickups that were fitted to older Epiphone Les Pauls, offering a warmer, fuller tone much closer to that of a classic Gibson PAF humbucker, and these are then wired though a traditional 3 way switch utilising high quality CTS potentiometers, to allow for smoother, more precise control over volume and tone adjustments, all the while maintaining tonal clarity.

Thanks for playing chords! So many reviews just solo which doesn't really tell me what the guitar sounds like.
you all probably dont care but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb lost the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Major Rhys instablaster =)
@Skyler Axl Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and im in the hacking process atm.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Skyler Axl it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much you really help me out !
@Major Rhys no problem xD
Just bought one at GC. Could not believe how it played! Played it for an hour in the store and could not find a bad fret or anything that was not perfect! Actually better than any Gibson I've ever pulled off the rack at a store! I bought it!
just bought it a few days ago, mint guitar. plays good, sounds good i would recommend it 👍
Just a question, does the neck get sticky?
Mine doesn't
After owning a Gibson R9 and a Gibson CS ES339 I was so stunned by the Epi LP Standard either 50’s or 60’s that I bought one on the spot, I did get the 60’s but ooof! The 50’s gold top! There’s nothing to upgrade and does it have the beef, tone and sustain of the R9? Does it stay in tune on the G string better than my R9 or 339? You bet! It does all of those things. Welcome back to high quality affordable instruments Epiphone.
Absolutely. I own 3 Gibson's and after playing a 2020 Inspired By Epi Les Paul 60's at the local store, I bought one. I was so impressed by it I took a chance and bought another 3 of the Inspired by models. I purchased the TV Yellow P-90 Special, the 61' SG with the Maestro Trem, and the Les Paul Custom in Ebony. All 3 of those are also outstanding guitars and I play them more than my Gibsons.
@@Anthem-nd8sh They are brilliant, like you, I have to have the P90 LP. Enjoy mate.
These are era correct and high end Les Paul's
I’ve just got a 60’s vintage burst. It’s such a great guitar. I’ve not owned a guitar since 1993 so my experience is limited. It certainly feels like a proper thing.
Just got one a few days ago from Sweetwater Music in smokehouse burst. The fret ends are a little rough, but I can fix that. Absolutely gorgeous guitar!! I love that it doesn’t have the coil taps etc. it has become my go to guitar!!
Thanks for the review. I busy saving up for one of these. I'm torn between the iced tea or the bourbon finish.
Which one did u end up getting?
Fully intended on buying a Classic before I saw this. With a price difference of only $100 I'm highly tempted to grab this.
got a 2020 Epiphone Les Paul standard 60s a month ago and it sounds and looks amazing. a Bourbon burst my current favorite guitar. just WOW. I have a few Gibson Les Paul standards and a 2019 Epiphone les Paul traditional pro 3. I'm buying a Epiphone Les Paul standard sunburst 50's next . these Epiphone Les Paul Standards 50's and 60's are great guitars. Gibson/Epiphone new management are done great things here in American. I live in Michigan not to far from Kalamazoo Michigan were they used to make Gibson/Epiphone before they went to Nashville, and the reason behind the name of the new/old Epiphone headstock. the company is as one now.
does it really have cts pots? what about the switch and the output jack
@@LuisSalgadoG95 yes. And it sounds as good as my 2019 Gibson Les Paul Standard. I like em both but the Epiphone is my new favorite. Gibson/Epiphone new Management have really raised the bar. Just add a good Amp.
HOw do you think the 50s and 60s compare?
@@lars667 it's honestly more about the neck thickness, the 60s one is thinner, you also have a 50s wiring (but you can always switch between one and another with a bit of soldering). I got a goldtop 50s one, absolutely love it, but I would recommend getting it in a shop if you can, I ordered a 60s before the 50s and the frets and the nut were all over the place...
That is a gorgeous instrument
Getting the smokehouse burst soon. So excited.
Thanks, one of the better reviews of this awesome guitar.
Excellent Sam, a very good informative review.
I've got one of these in ebony, and it's great.
Fantastic Video. Congrats and thank´s from Madrid (Spain).
Glad they come in the dark burst, iam set on that finish for my next Epiphone Les Paul. Great vid, thanks bro.
I just bought me the epiphone les Paul standard 60s bourbon burst. Did I make the right choice does it have the beef sound. ? . Lol TroyFrost/Troyster 😎 cool riffs cool 🎸🤘🤘🤘
Agree
Hi Sam, great demo as usual, thank you 🙂
Love my ‘60s Bourbon Burst. I did, however, install a set of Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pickups….huge upgrade. I have 3 other Epiphones with ProBuckers, and they all 3 sound fine. But this particular guitar’s bridge ProBucker was lacking for some reason. Neck sounded fine. So I’m going to rewind the bridge pickup and use the set in another guitar.
Awesome video. I'll be checking this out.
Great playing geezer:)
Just brought the 59 re issue from Pmt Norwich superb guitar.
Someone on market place is selling one for £350 and it's only been played a couple of times. Is it worth it??? Hell, for £350 I might just buy it anyway, even if it needed some work done to it, it still seems worth it. What did you think of the pups??
I just bought an Epiphone Les Paul Standard 60's and I tested the 50's! Well I can say that the 60's is really a step above the 50's! Plus, I hate 50's mechanics! From now on, I have the guitar of my dreams given my level!
4:23 amazing arroeggio
Gimme a word, gimme a sign, show me where to look, tell me what will I find, what will I find . Nobody else heard that ?
Beautiful guitar
Great review, gonna see if theres any at my nearest store, look so good
Nice review, fantastic guitar 🎸
Funny I picked up a 50’s gold top and I liked it so much I bought a 60’s Bourbon burst 😳
for £469.00 at pmt this guitar is a must buy for anyone in the uk that is wanting to upgrade their guitar
i own one and it's amazing
Love the review.
I wanna buy this Ep..but please tell me which better tone and sound between 50s or 60s?
They both have the exact same pickups, and are made of the same woods, so they would sound the exact same
And that's not a fact anyone can tell you. It's an opinion and I bet many different! Find out for yourself!
The 60s neck is thinner so that's basically that and the color. The 50s one have a natural color mahogany where the wood shows (back of the neck, sides and back of the body) whereas the 60s one have that red tinted color. I got a 60s iced tea and it was stunning, I exchanged it for a 50s one because of the wood color and the neck thickness
60s
The only thing that doesn't convince me about this beautiful guitar is the clean sound, maybe a bit too crunchy but I guess it's because this is a LP model, that is supposed to have a loud sound also on clean tones
For the price this is a great guitar.
for my firt electric guitar do you suggest this model or a Fender Strat? I like the sound of Les Paul much better
Bom dia, que guitarra fantástica. Esse amplificador também é sensacional, você poderia dizer a marca e modelo?
Great video!
Great review
So glad I bought one, and not 10 years ago. The improvements they made on this things are mmwwaa 🤌🏻
Ive read that folks like their Epiphone Les Paul's with the exception of the action being quite high. How's yours?
You can’t expect a guitar to arrive perfectly dialed to suit YOU. Have the guitar Supertuned to play the way you like it to. Problem solved. I’ve owned nearly 100 guitars over the last 40 years. I Supertuned each and every one right away.
Mine was spot on, just slightly under 4/64ths on the high E and right at 5/64ths on the low E.
am thinking of getting one but wondering bout the neck thickness, and that glossy sticky feel ....all the guitars i used are ultra thin C satin necks...any suggestions.
Good review
Is the bourbon burst the same as the vintage burst on the 50s? Certainly looks the same in this vid.
I think they might have got them mixed up.
No, the 50s is tobacco burst, the 60s is bourbon burst. Tobacco burst is black, whereas bourbon burst is dark brown.
does anyone know the song at 4:23? thanks in advanced!
It’s just improvising
This probably isnt a great question because its a Les Paul but can the 50s and 60s style play Alice in Chains, Metallica, Guns N' Roses, heavier stuff like that?
I think the 60's is better suited for those heavier stuff. It has stronger pickups and a slimmer neck.
These les Paul's are era correct 50's and 60's they are high end guitars
What was the second riff you played when going through the pick ups?
Possibly collective soul world I know
When considering the cost of an actual Gibson standard, it's a no-brainer for me.
Solid guitar!
Cual recomiendan, cort cr 300 o epiphone les paul standar 60s? Gracias, saludos desde Argentina !
mind is black ebony hehe, this 60s really have a nice sound.. 🤟
How is the neck compared to the '50s version??
Thinner neck on the 60s
@@danielleelizabeth9417
Thinner ? Or same profile, just smaller ?
I have the Gibson Standard 60's in bourbon burst but it looks nothing like this paint job. There's no black outer spray on the Gibson version.
I agree, the Iced tea one looks better ;)
Open D-chord “slightly” detuned..
How much when you get it?
Now the 50's and 60's Standards sell for $650.00 American dollars
And going up again in price in 2022
I got the 60s from Chicago music exchange. They had it for 599. This was just 2 weeks ago.
They sent me an offer I countered with 500 and they took it. It was on reverb. Brand new for 500 and some change. I’m happy it’s the bourbon burst.
@@patdunn314 I have the gold top 50s and love it. When my backlog of musicians friend points kick in I’ll pick up a 60’s in bourbon burst.
Bought a new one with a neck break for 155.00 fixed it and it's great.
Rolf Harris sells guitars now? :-)
Looks nothing like Rolf Harris.
@@thedok6419 When Rolf Harris was younger :-). A dead spit :-)
What pickups are in these?
Epiphone ProBuckers
no cts?
Yes, it actually has CTS in it. I tore mine down to be sure. Overkill I know, but that’s just me. Trust me, apart from a few sharp fret ends, that is easily fixable, this is a great guitar! Been playing for around 30 years. I have 11 guitars. I love this one!!
Which has a thinner neck, the 50s or the 60s?
60’s
Does not sound like a Gibson - Sorry!
I pardon you 😂😂😂
