  • Bonjour! Today we're trying every macaron in Paris- from the famous Laduree to the acclaimed Pierre Herme. Is the best macaron in Paris at one of the famous spots or, is it off the beaten path at a local pastry shop like Le Lautrec Chocolatier. Today, there's no such thing as too much sugar! (PS- did you know macarons are originally from Italy??)

    People tend to overate things when they hear that something is the “best”. Alessio has a higher palate because he’s European so tourist traps wouldn’t impress. Jessi has followed him. Also, some flavors don’t translate well. Romanians (my heritage) make rose hip jam. I grew up eating it so I’m used to it. Not everyone is. Lots of it is also personal preference. I would hate anything with rosemary in it because I hate rosemary but love passion fruit. C’est la vie! 💜💗

      You are so right, the tourist traps work for people who come from far away. I would bet that if the tourists didn't buy so much there, these bad shops wouldn't exist anymore.

      @@Grumpy67 could be but the Pierre Herme macarons I have been eating and loving way before it was a tourist thing.. I like exotic flavours and I like a desert that is not very sweet.. some people like sweet more.. and I like their creamy fillings.. I do not like the jam filled ones.. and most of pierre herme are creamy. I live a block from both Pierre Herme and Laduree and a few others..

      I also liked rose hip jam because of my Romanian heritage but I can understand why people who aren't used to this kind of flavor wouldn't like it. I miss eating this jam.

    As a French woman I would advise you : avoid the classic big companies for pastries and macarons. Trust local, random bakers. But keep in mind that if there is the word "boulangerie" in the window, they really make and bake their bread.

      @@ThePasinis I agree with Chantal. I love how open-minded and interested you are in trying new things and eating good food. But still, you walked into a lot of tourist traps. Keep in mind that the average Parisien will not rate a bakery on Google, he just goes to the bakery and buys his bread and that's it. So relying on Google ratings is not always the best way. Ask locals. You have a huge public and asking your public to give some tips before traveling to a certain city might give you good opportunities. Alessio recognizes good food being grown up among good food, but he is a tourist in Paris and almost every other European city too, so he has to rely on what others tell him. Try local and avoid the big chains! And if you need tips for (or a guide in) the Netherlands, just let me know! ;-)

    The rose macaron you had is named after Isfahan, the third-largest city in Iran. Rose has been a prominent thing in Iran since ancient times, being used from celebrations to mourning, because it makes people relaxed. Rose water (which 90% of the world's production is made in Iran) is used for perfume and to not only treat everything from heartaches to headaches, but also used in Iranian cuisine like Faloodeh (serbet-like dessert with vermicelli), masghati (jelly-like confection made with starch), shirin polo (pilaf with saffron, nuts, and dried fruits; typically for weddings), baghlava (Persian baklava), as well as tea! Rose water is even used (as a mix with Zamzam water; water from a religious well) to wash the holy Kaaba in Mecca!

    I'm surprised you guys tried so many macaron flavors that you didn't like! Why not choose more basic flavors instead? Personally, I love tea and floral-based desserts, so I choose more of those flavors at French bakeries. The Ispahan is one of the most popular flavor and dessert at both Pierre Hermé and Ladurée. Also, passion fruit is a very popular flavor for macaron and desserts too! Yes, I wholeheartedly agree that Ladurée's Marie Antoinette Tea macaron was really awful! Pierre Hermé's macarons are very sweet too. Not my favorite. But I do like Ladurée. The macarons I've had were at their US branch stores. There are many good macarons, viennoiseries, and pâtisseries at Ladurée too. My favorite is their Rose Raspberry Saint-Honoré. Delicious!

    Oh, I could tell by Alessio's facial expressions EXACTLY how he felt about each one. I honestly would trust his culinary opinions on alot of things. Jessi and I, we are Americans who married Italian / Sicilian men, and our tastes are a bit different. The two of us totally learned, and learned FAST, what REAL Italian food tastes like, and that these American chain "Italian Food" places are a bit of a mockery - like McDonald's vs. Applebee's, Taco Bell vs. a 5 star Michelin place. My mother in law and father in law could out-cook any top ranked chef on this planet when it comes to Italian food. I am sure Alessio's mom ranks right up there with my in laws. Those ladies know how to cook. Alessio, Jessi, thank you for your opinions, if I ever go to France, I will know what to avoid.

    Don't know why that passionfruit/chocolate macaron is called Mogador, as Mogador is an island off the coast of Morocco and both chocolate and passionfruit...are from the Americas. Did Pierre not take a geography lesson? 😂The thing about Madagascar vanilla is that Madagascar is so well-known for its vanilla...and yet, vanilla too is originally from the Americas! Madagascar being the leading producer of vanilla is the result of the legacy of (fittingly) French colonialism.
    On nearby Réunion in 1841, 12-year-old Edmond Albius (who was enslaved), discovered how to pollinate vanilla orchids by hand, and this method helped the island grow what we call Bourbon vanilla. But because Madagascar is way bigger and more labor, the French took advantage of it and built many vanilla plantations across the island that used Edmond's method.

    I agree that Pierre Herme is overrated but I also think they were too harsh, like for example about Ispahan with raspberries, lichi and rose... I had it and really loved it.
    I love desserts with fruits, but I see they don't really, so why would they be rating a fruit dessert when they probably won't like it (like she said about passionfruit)?
    Doesn't make sense.
    I guess it depends on person's taste.
    I would say Pierre Herme is crazy expensive like most big names in Paris, but the truth is you are likely to find equally delicious desserts in almost all pastry shops around town, and much cheaper

    Hi, I admire your sense of adventure, but if you are going to do a taste test, buy at least 3 of the same flavors and 3 specialty flavors from each shop. Regarding floral flavors, it is more for certain Europeans and Middle Eastern palates, but certainly not Americans. If you have a chance to go to a shop specializing in jams, you would be surprised at the wide selections they have, comparing to what we have back home. Love your videos.

      Yeah, I think the same !
      I don't understand; if Pierre Hermé was that bad and unrefined...
      How Japanese, a very refined society and palate opened stores and did other products like drinks, exclusive to Japan ?
      The only thing to reproach is sometimes the taste of milk is very pronounced like in Ispahan, sometimes sugar too.
      But the flavor mixing is very high quality !

    If I was a restaurant owner I’d lock the doors if I saw y’all approaching 😂 the amount of disaffection you guys have is overwhelming. I’ve learned if it’s popular or pricey you guys hate it and only like the random mom and pop shops, which is great but dang it’s okay to like touristy places too they got there for a reason.

    We have found that local eateries are probably the best bet when traveling. We may try a few recommendations but in Paris, it’s hard to find really bad food or desserts. The first time we had Pierre H macarons was back in 2008 and we loved it. He didn’t have traditional flavors but we didn’t experience what you experienced so I’m thinking they may have gone down in quality, which is sad.

    dear guys, please stick to whatever pastry you like in the US, you seem to be surpassed by the macaron (i don’t believe you were surprised that you actually tasted rose in a ROSE macaron!?, what is it supposed to taste, mcflurry?) I mean yes there is a chance pierre hermé s macaron might notl be all tip top, and i ve tasted them, they are pretty damn good

    • @cathycole9577
      @cathycole9577 Рік тому +3

      One of the most frequent critiques of Rose flavored bakes, is that the baker used too much rose flavoring, and it is overpowering. I have seen it again and again.

    • @screamz83
      @screamz83 Рік тому

      @@cathycole9577 OK, but to mention that these flavors are all natural and not chemical based, big difference, all the complexity is to reach the correct flavors and incorporate them in a macaron
