@John Classified I worked at the Ammunition Supply Point when it was between the construction company thing outside the post and the little one for post. If I remember correctly, the only started paving the road that went basically parallel to the airport from the fuel point to the motorpools.
my wife worked at a place where they have signs showing how to sit on a toilet, apparently some cultures never saw a toilet and would sit backwards. Also many would throw toilet paper in the trash cans not knowing to flush it or even how to flush.
By the way, this is in Pennsylvania at a food processing factory.
Yeah, we had those same signs. In fact I took a photo of one and used it for the thumbnail for one of my earlier Afghanistan videos. Oh, and TP in the trash is common in most of the developing world due to under-engineered sewage systems. Where I’m living now, in Ecuador, you always put your paper in the trash. Whenever I travel back to the States or Europe I have to retrain myself.
I can confirm I was in a shopping center in fez morroco they a bin next to toilet with shit on em... bless em
I've seen the same signs in Michigan. I asked and the guy there told me they would just throw the toilet paper behind the toilets

Some countries have horrible toilets/plumbing so the throw the toilet paper away not to clog it
Sadly, its one of the cleaner deployed toilets I've seen. It's normally someone's un-flushed shit piled ontop of another person's un-flushed shit. Don't mind the shower tadpoles and shaved pubes in the sink! You never really understand how disgusting a human can be until you deploy.
Al Asad from 2008-2010, I miss it almost every day. Get up and go to work, rinse and repeat, payday is the last Saturday of the month. Simple life with very little stress.

I worked for Kbr trans services in Al Asda . I did the potable water for the Defacs and Medical areas . It was a sweet little job where you got left alone as long as the water tanks didn't go dry

I spent 6 months at Camp Leatherneck back in 2014. Boredom was the biggest negative aspect. The base had already started it's drawdown so everyday you just didn't know what would still be operating. Twice they shrunk the wire without any notice. Wonderful people there, from the Marines I worked with to the TCNs that kept everything running smoothly. I do miss my daily drive over to Camp Bastion for coffee and tea in the morning.
I never did make it down to Leatherneck. I bounced around from Shirana, to Shank, to Bagram, to Gamberi and finally Fenty. Now I’m slumming it on an air base in Niger and actually missing Afghanistan.
Oh my god! I forgot about those Millo yogurts! Those where a staple of my diet. Thank you for this video. It really is the small details that end up describing what that experience was all about. The monotony and boredom between the explosions.

I was recently deployed to Baghdad, BDSC and was there during the assassination of General soleimani. Happened about a half mile from the base just on the opposite side of the airfield. We were used to taking rockets and mortars but that air strike caught us off guard and was the only time I actually went into the bunker haha
I was thankful to be in Afghanistan instead of Iraq at that time. We never did get any significant retaliation, just lots of false alarms.

Good old Fenty ! I spent almost 4 years there. That restaurant behind the FD was open 2 years ago for a bit. I miss my barbershop!! I got you son. LoL

I've never been to Afghan but to Iraq many times. This video reminds me how much I miss it--the sand, the dust, the generator noise, etc. Maybe I don't miss the "INCOMING, INCOMING, INCOMING" so much, but even that could be humorous sometimes.

@@rolux4853 I was deployed with the Army once to Iraq, but most of my trips actually were as a contractor after I got out. No fu**ing way in hell I would re-enlist now with the shi*show the Army has become. As a contractor your life is potentially at risk also (some jobs, and some places, more than others) but at least you were making a pretty good paycheck to be over there.
I worked at the RPAT in FOB Fenty (JAF) from December 2011 until June 2014. Great memories!
In 2002-2003, I was at FOB 195 which was Kabul Military Training Center (KMTC), It was located across from ISAF. We used to travel to Bagram
couple times a week.

That is a nice FOB, the last one i was at no lights were allowed to be on at night. it made night shift interesting.
Yeah, blackout FOBs suck at night. Did they at least allow you to use red filtered flashlights? I had a few tough nights back in 2012 trying to do electrical work with a red flashlight. Really difficult to sort out the wire colors, almost like being colorblind.
most fobs and cops were blackout and no, no light means no light. You use small little flashlights that put out almost no light, or jus tgo without, the moon works pretty well.
I was working in Iraq on FOB GABE, 2004-2006...KBR electrician....all looks very familiar...stay safe
There's alot of dorm bathroom where the showers get clogged from guys "blowing their nose" in the shower too lol

You joke, but people have been giving pretty funny reviews of various bases and facilities on bases on Google maps.
At the end of the day, these are pretty sweet digs. If you have a family back at home, it sucks BUT, if you're a young, single dude, fuck yeah. Life is pretty straight forward and you get to hang out with the boys everyday. Plus, on a FOB, it's AYCE every single meal :)
The worst thing about being deployed was the constant droning of generators 24/7, everywhere you go. They were working on a small power plant on my fob and 6 months in I awoke to complete silence. Then I couldn't sleep for 2 weeks because I got used to the noise and missed it. Anyone that can't sleep without a tv on can relate.
Man havnt been to fob fenty, but that brings back memories of being at camp Salerno in 09 and KAF in 14. Stay safe man.
Ah, you got out of Salerno while the getting was good. I was in Shank when Salerno got it’s big VBID. Unfortunately I was also in Shank when Shank got a massive VBID as well. 2012 was a rough year.
Yeah I was there in December of 09 when they almost over ran the base after camp Chapman had the vbid hit them. Gotta love rocket city spent 15 and half month in that place lol. But we would get hot every day some times a couple of times a day. The only thing I hated was have to get the defac rebuilt every couple of months.
I did contracting for about 3 years, started out in Kuwait working on MRAP mine resistant vehicles for DOD, then for the state department in Baghdad for about 2 years and then Erbil for a short time. That contract was weapons authorized which isn't what's it's cracked up to be since you can drink on a state department contract but not if weapons authorized. It get's addicting and you meet some great people. I was a vehicle mechanic on every contract.
Did you retire after you got out of overseas contracting or did you transition back to working in the US? I’ve found it impossible to go back to a normal job.

Yeah, it was a relatively nice FOB. The smallest I’ve been to was Gamberi, but even that was pretty comfortable.

Heading over to Seattle for Paddys Day, so I'm gonna take in Tacoma hopefully.......finally.....wild horses wont stop me this time......then a couple of nights up in Fairbanks, AK........had a real crap winter here in Galway.....lots of storms, so it's good training for the severe weather in Alaska......keep well 🤠
Sounds like an interesting trip. Enjoy Tacoma. Point Defiance Park is a must see, especially if the weather is decent. I haven’t made it to Fairbanks yet, but I like Anchorage. I’ll be back in Ecuador next week.

Very nice friendly open people from what I’ve experience Stateside . Contemplating retiring in Cuenca . From what I understand it went through a boom and bust with ex pats. Of course international Living making it so attractive to retire on $100 a week didn’t help. They did the same for Ireland where I’m originally from and I can say that’s BS.

chris doe my wife’s family is from Quito and we live just outside of Quito in the valley. Cuenca is pretty nice. I’d prefer to live there, but being near her parents important to my wife and kids. Yeah, International Living stretches the truth quite a bit.

They’re ok. It’s a little dependent which company you work for. Most folks have between 1 and 7 roommates depending on the size of the room. The rooms are “hard structures” so you don’t have to go to the bunkers every time there’s an incoming mortar. The bathrooms are a nightmare, and the DFAC (cafeteria) can be overcrowded. Overall it’s annoying but not terrible. Also, if you get sent out to a FOB it’s nicer but you usually don’t have hard structures.

Friend of mine was in aviation in the Army. Retired a few years ago and went right back being a contractor in Afghanistan. He did one tour and said never again as a contractor
Yeah, soldiers always think that contractors have it good. Yes, we get paid more, but there’s a reason it pays as much as it does.
GJG: It's definitely not for everyone, although the vast majority of contractors I worked with in Afghanistan were former military (85%). Most of the non military contractors were former LEO, so we had very few problems where I worked.
Funny story. I remember in 2012 we picked up an "FNG" who we nicknamed "Armani". No lie, he got off the DFS plane from Dubai dressed in a totally black Armani outfit. Anyone who has been in Afghanistan knows that's not how we dressed. His 1st meal at the DFAC was an unmitigated disaster. Armani wanted all kinds of special healthy food that the DFACs rarely (if ever) had. Anyway, "Armani" lasted less than 2 weeks. He had an urgent family problem at home & had to bail. The company got him a short notice airline ticket home at great expense (round trip, btw). We knew his story was BS b/c just prior to him leaving he was asking everyone who would listen about jobs back in the US. Like I said, it's not for everyone, he never returned. The irony of all this is that "Armani" was a US Army reserve Warrant Officer. Go figure.
The flip side of that is I also knew guys who worked 10+ years in Afghanistan, paid off all of their debts & banked half a million plus. I worked 18 rotations over an 8 year period & called it quits. I may have stayed too long at the party b/c I'm paying for it in other ways now. That said, I loved every minute of it, except annual CRC.

It's been 8 years since I was over there, and the second he filmed walking into the shit shack, I swear could smell it. There's things you never forget, and the latrines are some of them.
The worst place on earth is the transient billeting latrine in Bagram. I’ve never looked up to check, but I’m confident there’s shit on the ceiling.

I remember on my first deployment I had diarrhea for a week straight because of the DFAC food. Not sure if my stomach was adjusting or if something was wrong with the food, but I made it through with no problems. 😂
I actually got parasites from the DFAC in Sharana. I had been eating a lot of salad. We had many Afghan soldiers eating in the DFAC at that time, so I assume I picked it up after some ANA with dirty hands used the salad tongs.

Aaahhh, the DOD contractor life. I was in AFG from 2011-2013, spent most of it at KAF and a little bit at Leatherneck. It's funny, while you're there it sux balls, but when you leave/demob...you kinda miss it. Any funny RnR stories you care to share? Lol
My R&Rs are usually low key visits with the wife and kids. I’ll have to give it some thought and try to remember if there were any R&R stories worth telling. Maybe just some weird stuff passing through Dubai...

Yes the “fobits” some sign up for pog jobs too dumb and forced to be grunts, some sign up for grunt jobs score high on ASVAB and forced to be pogs. “Guaranteed 1 of 3 MOS’s” i scored high with 115 gt went to 1300 field. Best sandbox gig is DoS work while staying in an all-inclusive 5-star resort, rental car, and $200/day cash per diem. Maybe you learned some tricks for your next deployment.

I thank God that my tours were not spent on the FOB...... If my time would have been spent inside the wire I would have slit my wrists. Only slept, wrote reports for the day and on occasion ate there. My reaction to this video? Cue the "Fobbit Song"......

Yeah, it’s a constant struggle to get certain cultures to use the restrooms in a respectful way. There was one Afghan that got caught shitting in the shower and pushing it down the drain with his feet.

Hi thanks I learned a lot. One of your videos said "no gelcaps" allowed. Is that on a base only? Or you think it is like that in Kabul too for USA expats at embassy? even gelcaps with powder in them not allowed? that wacks my immune boosters for covid prevention, which are powdered colostrum, kind of bummed about that.
It was a US military rule. If you’re not arriving via a military base and going through the military version of a customs inspection then I doubt it would be an issue. As for dry gel caps, they were treated the same as any other type of gel cap. I’m sure it stems from some type of smuggling technique someone used in the past since you can easily buy empty gel caps and fill them with whatever.

Electrician. Not anything particularly sensitive. Mostly just fixing things other contractors break, and for some reason changing lamps and resetting GFCIs. Stuff they really should have a laborer or custodian do.

Right, those buildings at the start look exactly like the huts on lightning and the weather was just as weird there as well. But the view of the mountain right next to lightning was awesome. Went up there for a PT event once and the view from up top was amazing, could see the whole FOB and gardez slightly through the dusty haze.
I was deployed at the same time. The week that guy was killed was crazy.
Ugly Boy yeah, strange times. Made me glad I was in Afghanistan rather than Iraq.

Yes. I thought at first it was a mortar or rocket hitting the building i was in in camp 6, but when we went outside to go to the bunker you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. It was almost a whole lot worse than it was. The second part of that attack was guys with suicide vests, but the VBID was so big I think any that survived it stumbled in totally disoriented and weren’t able to do any more damage.
@@FallofftheMap yea it was crazy. I was let's say, close haha. I actually got a tbi from that blast. Not a fun few days. I remember the alarm going off for dam near 18 hours straight.

Furqan it’s true, hiring is up. I don’t agree with your prediction that this peace deal will fall apart. I think they’re going to push it through despite fact on the ground contracting everything they say is happening. There were several attacks leading up to and during the 7 day reduction in violence period. None of them were widely reported on. I think the powers that be have already decided to end the war and declare a bullshit victory.

Honestly, I’m a little out of the loop. It sounded like they were going to take over when I left on R&R in March, but I got stuck in Ecuador because of Covid and when my base closed at the end of September I took a layoff. I’ve been more focused and catching up on lost family time than following the twists and turns of the contract lawsuits and drama.
Breakfast was usually my least favorite. Those powdered eggs always made me feel a type of way lmao

I have no way to investigate to see if he is scamming you or not. If you think you’re getting catfished you might try reverse image searching any photos he’s sent you to see if they are used on the internet under a different name.
