In the first part we learned how to play the major pentatonic scale around a basic "box" pattern over a single chord.
However, before long you'll want the freedom to play major pentatonic across the entire guitar neck. This lesson will help you build a large roadmap for the scale and open up your improvisation.
In this video we jam our way steadily through several scale positions, followed by some wider "merged" patterns. With a few runs through, you'll be surprised at how intuitive your major pentatonic playing becomes.
Don't forget to visit the lesson page (link below) for this jam in another key, downloadable backing tracks, printable diagrams and exercises.

Wow, that was surely one of the most enjoyable 30 minutes of my guitar playing life.
These lessons are a paradigm shift for me , unlocking many of the road blocks.. I’ve always tried to be a heart and soul player, but more knowledge of the fretboard will allow me to greatly expand on that.. thank you for what you do..
Instead of boring memorization, you let me Jam! Damn! I'm just learning this and I had so much fun!!! Thank you!!!
+glennevangelista Learning's gotta be fun! Glad you enjoyed it.
I really hope that there are more videos like this for the rest of the major Penta scales ... I have been and still struggling to understand/recall root notes on the fret board .. This type of audio visual Jam tracks are gold. Please keep them coming and thank again .
I've been stuck for a long time .I just want to say thank you. For opening the door. A great lesson.
Amazing.. This is the dopest most straight-forward lesson I've ever had. Will recommend to anyone. FRETJAM 4 LIFE.
Lovely video content! Forgive me for chiming in, I would love your opinion. Have you tried - Rozardner Inspiring Chord Reality (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for how to play guitar scales minus the headache. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my close friend Aubrey got great results with it.
I can't believe how much better your videos, and method of teaching are, over *all* others that I've encountered. I knew the Pentatonic all over the neck, but the way I started looking at the patterns, with the way you highlighted them, got me to start looking at them somewhat differently. I started connecting them in different ways, too. Honestly, my soloing wasn't great before, but I've noticed a big difference in less than two days!! The massive amount of praise you get in the comments is well deserved. One really good thing also is, some of your videos are just a little advanced for me, so I've got more to learn!! Thank You.
This video literally opened the fretboard to me, i can't thank you enough man. My happiness right now can't be expressed
That was the best guitar lesson I have ever seen fot understanding. Great
this is a brilliant lesson. Very easy to understand and follow. Within a few minutes i was soloing quite fluently. Thank you
The only guitar teacher no bs here at youtube the best teacher.
That one track just broke me out of years of rambling, incoherent scale traversing by giving me a target to hit. You don’t know what you’ve just done for me, or maybe you do. I can’t thank you enough.
My only question is, of all the guitar players and teachers Ive been around how come no one has ever told me this? It’s so simple yet if you don’t get this down you’ll go nowhere. I was just playing sequences Ive never been able to play before and I wasn’t even trying. My mind is blown.
Loved the approach. I hope to see "guided jams" like this for other scales too!!! All the best.
I love this channel with all my heart!
Thank you very much!
Where have you been all my life that I have been looking for guitar lesson with brain. You sure know how to teach, putting yourself in ur students shoes. Thank you
I hope this is the start of a series of videos. Your Guided Jam Track over the Harmonic Minor was phenomenal. I've been wanting to see more videos like this from you. So many places you can go with this type of Jam Track. Highlighting the target tones as the chord changes (like you did with the harmonic minor track) would be really cool in future videos. Great job with this concept.
+John Heiler Hi John, yes I plan to do more guided jams along the lines of the harmonic minor one. I didn't highlight the target tones in this one because with all the chords being on the same root it's a bit of a free for all and I wanted to keep it open. The next stage would be playing major pentatonic over root-chord changes, so that will definitely have target notes highlighted. Cheers.
Yeah because the chords used have the same root just target the 3rd and the 5th in addition to the root for starting and ending points
Then say, “Thank You” at the tip jar.
These are the best lessons on UA-cam - Thanks!
new to guitar and never done anything like this. It is fantastic thanks! I really got to jam out and play some stuff in the upper register that actually made some musical sense
Best on this topic on TY. VERY NICE. please these videos coming.
This is literally the best damn lesson ever.
Clever and most effective teaching approach video that I can get it all in one consisting of Theory, Application, and Practice. Again magnificent video for me.
Thanks to your lessons I now understand how to build chords with "scary" names like C13sus2, and improvise over them. Thank you very much!
Such a happy way to learn, just jamming along with this. Thank you so much!
This has to be one of the best ways ive seen anyone breakdown scales for beginners. Even me as someone who already has no issue playing can learn.
Wow amazing! This was so easy to learn I started to add on some rytjm
This is easily the best tutorial i have seen 👌
Love the riffing at the end - would love to learn those licks - very tasty! TAB????

Wow, this is awesome. Thank you for creating this.
The best instructions. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge...
after a six year hiatus, due to contracting a severe mental disorder, I want to resume playing the guitar, but, THIS TIME, working towards being an authentic Blues guitarist. Having played solo gigs for 35 years, I played with no one else at all. I learned nothing new, and progressed little, if any at all. Playing and learning scales, never entered my mind, and now I see scales are the groundwork for everything to come. I need to research definitions of terms frequently used, of which I have no knowledge of, whatsoever. It sounds like an enormous amount of work, but my determination is strong. Please, throw me a bone, mentioning anything you think would be beneficial in my quest to be a knowledgeable blues guitarist.
KEYS ARE JUST PITCH....FOCUS MORE ON INTERVALS. ONE OCTIVE AT A TIME. If you want to play BLUES...transfer it to minor. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Learn the 12 barr progression. Learn it in Amin....Just play the I, IV, V movement. Its the same thing as 6,2,3...A min, D min, E min....When over A minor play A min. When over D min..play D min. When over E min play E minor. Then add OPTION/passing NOTES. I chose BLUES VERIATION 3. (R..............b3..x...4....x....5..................b7..x R)You can also play it from The MAJOR pentatonic. Apply the same concept.( R..x...2...x...3..............5...x....6...............R).............
-You can also play just within the Major pentatonic...Just make simple barr chord. Example...when you go to the 2 note. Make a power chord. Play the second mode (ocitve to octive at first)...Apply the same concept to the rest of the NOTES. You'll basically play 5 power chords with 5 different MODES within the major pentatonic...It'll sound rock /county. Then learn the double stops or 2 Note chords..it's either going to be a maj3 or 4th intervals....you'll simply find pull off or riffs points. A lot of its has to do with being familiar with the sound of the scale. It'll basically play it self....it passing notes just makes it sound bussied or creates tension...but it's going to resolve to one of the pentatonic notes...Hopes that makes sense.
Or if you're more further alone of knowing( I IV, V are Maj.) (II. III. VI are. minor)....Play a Maj or min pentatonic over those notes/chord according...Example in C maj....play C maj pentatonic...when over the ii chord play D minor pentatonic. When over the 6 chord... Play Minor pentatonic. You'll still be within all the note of the C major diatonic scale....it'll still sound rock/ country....Later on you'll just insert the two missing notes for more define modes. Example you'll just insert the 4 and 7th to make a MAJOR or Ionoian mode....4 and b7 for mixloian...#4 and 7 for lydain....The same with minor..(2 and b6 = Aeolian). (2 and 6 = dorian ( b2 and b6 = Phrygian)...As you advance..you'll simply Play Aeolian with maj7 to get the HARMONIC minor. Then you'll just shift one note to get different modes within that scale. The melodic minor is just an Ionian with b3....and seven different modes from that.
Fingerstyle Blues or electric Blues? The Peter Gelling written Progressive series of books cover a wide range of Blues styles, from acoustic Blues to Ragtime to Blues Rock. A good place to start from, I'd say.
This is so helpful! thank you!
Very very useful tutorial.
it took my add mind a minute or to but hey this is by far my greatest lesson. thanks
Danke!
Danke schön!
This is great! I've been playing Guitar only for a week but I can do simple solos because of you thank you!

Thank You very much..

I have been watching your vedios this weekend there are a lot of tutorials out there what I like is I fill you are confident with your tutorial and don't jam email in my email app also I did have a break where I can improvise up and down the frit bord .These vedios help me put it all together for if I do get to jam with a good guitar player or drummer at least we can communicate I fill these vedios are very important at this stage of my guitar journey to further my skills and thanks I'm looking for the donate button I'll have to get of UA-cam and go to my files..Rock On...Roland J Gutierrez from Magdalena New Mexico 🇺🇸 usa..aka RocknRollFlat5.
Like the previous comment I would like to be cued (if possible) when the chord changes. I have a problem recognizing the chord change so I don't switch my target notes. I end up only ending at the root but I don't think that's what I need to be doing.
I do want to thank you for the tutorials on shell chords and slash chords. No one else comes close to teaching this (or even mentioning it) the way you do.
Really good :) i understand im very impressed that i learned from this video. right now im smiling like this :D.
Thats really cool, you really can stay with the notes with a little practice
Wow man., been looking for thissss thanksss
Man I Luv this! Thanks, !!!! Learning so much from your visual tools, part of the way I learn best. Really awesome Thank You
definately need to learn this alot!
Thanks for the great video!! :D
very precise. good job..
I honestly feel this is how everyone should learn guitar. I've been playing from tabs and instructional videos trying to learn riffs and solos that are probably beyond my ability, and I do not fully understand what they are doing, but these lessons are perfect, explaining and highlighting root notes and intervals, and then when a player is ready they can add in notes from the minor scales and fancy bends and slides. Really good stuff fret jam! Keep the lessons coming 😁
Great exercise. I'm exhausted lol
simply explained, but very effective...
Nice lesson!
thank you. very good stuff
best video to help me under stand pentatonics so to make sure i under stand all pentatonic patterns can be played on any frets and finding out what pentatonic note I'm playing i have to find chords that are similar to A C D E G correct ? or do i need to review more videos ?
Excellent lesson. Could you please let me now how to play the C13sus2 chord ? I want to play the chord progression and loop it. Then practice this lesson.
Not sure if I'm doing the right thing but , I'm picking notes out and making my own licks out , bit of string bending , and I actually feel like I'm actually playing properly if that makes sense ? Oh sorry meant to say I've just subscribed 👍😎🎸
Great video. Thanks so much.
How would the scale positions vary for say example, the A major pentatonic scale? Very helpful video thank you
The scale shapes don’t change. Just put your pinkie finger on the A instead of the C to start and everything else falls into place.
Another Lydian Dominant lesson would be awesome.
+Alex Padilla Just play the Lydian with a b7...dude or a Lydian with a #2 or b2.lmaoit's just IV mode of the melodic minor. Melodic minor has b3....that same noteis the b7 for the IV chord of melodic minor...You can vamp...like you did with the V chord using the Phrygian dominant. There's a lesson for that....Apply the same concept...Vamp the IV with melodic minor mode....If you don't wish to play straight up melodic minor...
Hey I ran across this blues variation scale today. It's kind of like the dorian or mixolian. As you know the only different is the maj3 or b3..From the maj count it's..................................................R 2 x 3 x x 5 6 x R
This video may take 31:16 mins. But the time you should practice it and memorize the roots may take 100hrs
Simply the best.
This is awesome! Can you please do one in the key of G??
Nothing to say... except it's useful for me to understand and apply for better playing.
Thanks for the lesson, a bit difficult for me that I do not speak English well. Is it possible to watch a video in which you play on this basis?
Where is part one you keep referring too? What is the video called???
Daft question but what are the numbers in the fingering spaces ??
What are the numbers 1 2 3 5 6 supposed be a reference for brother?
the notes (or scale degrees) in the scale.
In the major pentatonic in key of C those would be:
1 = C
2 = D
3= E
5 = G
6 = A
The 4 and 7 (F and B in the C major scale) are generally not played.
20 years of unanswered questions. i could have been Joe Satriani by now. thanks.
dear friend im just wandering if you do lessons on line ? I'm learning a lot from you method ... cheers
+evandro silva Hi Evandro, I don't do skype lessons currently, sorry I can't help with that. But I hope I can continue to help in some way through this channel and the site.
no worries dude ! The lessons have been very helpful . have a happy new year
best lesson
Tabs for the final jam??? great lesson thanks man
Hi, I have turned on annotations but i dont see any tips in the video. Could someone help please ? I am new to guitar and I dont want to miss anything. Any help is much appreciated!
Ah sorry about that mate, UA-cam got rid of annotations some time ago.
@@fretjamguitar oh Okay. Can you let me what am i missing here ?
Ive got some questions i hope someone could help me with: how do i find the 4th, 7th and so fourth? Is there notes "missing" in the "standard" major pentatonic since i cant find these notes in the video?
Some videos and scales show the major pentatonic with additional notes in the box between the 2nd and 5th frets. 2nd fret on the a string, and fourth fret on the d and g string. Is this a differnt version of the major pentatonic?
Thanx in advance😉👍
+Marius Myklebust I have a lesson on intervals coming next week that will help you with this. Basically you're correct, major pentatonic omits the 4 and 7 from the major scale.
Thank you. Looking forward to it👍
Ever with a video like this, no matter how hard i try it still sound robotic. Any help?
Enjoying this exercise greatly. Thank you!
Quick question: When I listen to this chord progression I feel like it wants to resolve to a different chord after the C13sus2 before going back to C but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is. Any thoughts?
+Chris Loos Fmaj? It's common to hear a movement to the 4 chord when a b7 is added to the 1 chord.
Just tried it- that's the one. Thank you!
What does a C13sus2 look like? Thanks all of your videos are very well done!!!
