Brilliant. Those shelves would have been 35 and 7/8 if I was doing it but you’re the master!

Not sure it would have mattered 🤣 but someone might have a project where it does.

interesting - similar to the magnet trick for cutting dovetails - I really like the "use the saw plate" as the gauge, and the saw-set trick is cool! - thank you aqain
(we ALL have projects that need EXACTLY the amount of wood that we have on-hand !!)

I love my Japanese saws, such a smooth , almost polished cut face, needs no sanding

Interesting point about saw kerf. Whilst the blade might be thinner on a Japanese saw, I've got very little set on my dovetail saw and would probably get a similar sized kerf. I'm intrigued to measure it now! Have to admit, I'd have thought a master of the saw such as you would just have scribed around the piece at both 36" marks and then just cut freehand. I'd have taken the chance, and I'm not nearly as good as you, but I think I'd get it right 98% of the time!

Ah, but if I'd scribed twin lines my poor eyes would have had a fit trying to follow between them 😆
I'm not sure what my success rate would be, but I figured since I couldn't afford any mistakes I'd jig these cuts, and share the idea.
Definitely good to practice free sawing though, as it's much quicker.

I had a similar dilemma recently, and used a funny little 3d square (tried to link an Instagram post but it got deleted) to keep the saw at dead 90.

Case of whatever it takes and whatever will do the trick

Great tip! I think it’ll work with 123 blocks too! (Maybe masking tape for less friction and/or for a gap chafer for the bottom set)
I was actually planning to put neodymium magnets on a 123 block, so it’ll hold the saw as I use it… with this idea, you can have the 123block against a try-square… so you get both square&plum cuts. Additionally, you can run/slide the magnetized-123block-saw-combo against a long 24” or 48” straight edge (clamped down on the stock) to make super long cuts… a hand-saw guide I guess.
Would love to see what kinda ideas you’d come up with with some 123blocks.
This company has some with a unique/special hardware kit (attaching together with HW flush)…
