My dad told me he gives shows "the 3 episode test" and I really really hope you vibe with that cause I Roommate (1x03) is one of my fave eps of any show, actually Futurama has a lot of gold in the first four seasons.
I agree, but for me it's episode 2. You get the Whalers on the Moon song, the Crushinator, and one of the most iconic quotes of all time. Blackjack and Hookers.

This episode ties into multiple episodes.
Go to the scene where Fry is tipping over, look under the desk as you see a shadow of Nibbler who will debut a few episodes in & later cover the pilot episode.
Mite episodes in they do cover the first crew referenced in th pilot episode.
The creators of The Simpsons created Futurama. They actually did a Simpsons & Futurama Crossover episode.

Futurama gets better as the seasons go on. It gets really deep, stupidly silly, thought provoking, and generally fun.
