      Russians sent their fleet to protect the Patriots against Redcoats. We also helped the northern states in the Civil War against the south. Russia and USA were close allies for a long time, which has been strongly suppressed. The October Revolution weakened the Russian empire, but strengthened the Leftist revolutionary movements in the Capitalist USA. So during the civil war, the US helped some states like Poland to break off. But it wasnt until the end of WW2 that the US gained total suppremacy on the world stage. Thats when Russia became a competitor. The USSR supplied Europe with cheap resources. Up until then the US was the main supplier of resources for Europe.

      I guess you can't really be patriotic for a foreign country (unless you are a Serb like I am, and if that country is an Orthodox Slavic country like Russia or Ukraine, but that's a long and tragic story), But... All heroes, all brave and honorable people, friends and enemies, they all have their place in the eternity. If there's Heaven (or Valhalla, I guess), that's where all the heroes sit together and where only bravery and honor count, not the side of the trench they fought in. That's exactly the message of Sabaton music - they don't take sides - they sing about everyone who's loved by the gods of War.

Gives me chills whenever I hear "Heed the Motherland's call and brace for the storm!" and "From the mountains and the plains, coming thousands on the trains," since the patriotism is so strong, you know every citizen heard the call and answered it, I wish my country had at least a sliver of patriotism left somewhere, maybe things wouldn't be falling apart so much if we still loved our nation as we did back then :P

      I like that Russia keeps remembering but honestly I hate that only one half of the truth is remembered. Nobody is allowed to say that USSR started WW2 alongside Hitler by attacking Poland and that they were providing supplies to Germany for the attack on the West. Also, many of the Soviet dead were directly caused by Stalin and his disregard for human life.
      Remembering wars should be about honoring heros but also about learning from own mistakes. And Russia does ony the first one, ignoring things like enormous material help from USA, Katyn massacre, Warsaw insurrection etc.

      @@alexs7189 We have, but there are very questionable decisions made during WW2 by Sweden, it was only militarily neutral but that's where the neutrality stopped. That being said, I do not blame my own country despite that. We were between two military powers that could completely destroy our nation and they would if we ever refused their demands.
      Regarding our long lasting peace, yeah that is of course fortunate. But which two nations has been at war the most of all other nations in the entire world? Ohh, hello Denmark and Sweden who fought eachother at every opportunity despite gaining very little in terms of territory or wealth. Over 30 wars and several hundred years of being in a state of war between eachother where pauses in actual fighting were simply preparations for the next battle. Yet, despite having the most warlike relationship of all nations, Sweden and Denmark are among the closest and friendliest international relationships to ever exist in present day. Probably second only to the relationship between Sweden and Finland which I really do not think any other international relationship can match. It's interesting how things can turn completely 180 in seemingly no time at all.
      But yeah, all marches on Moscow have ultimately led to complete disaster and destruction of all attacking forces. The Swedish Carolean army, likely being the most fearsome army at the time, winning battles despite being outnumbered 2-4:1 were pretty much completely destroyed during their march towards Moscow. The russians pay a huge price in blood but they are undoubtedly survivors and that commands respect.

    This is a great reaction.
    Sabaton are better teachers of history than most lecturers in the subject! And in all their songs they bring a feel of the country they are singing of.
    I love how you highlighted Sabaton's use of male choirs as being a very Russian thing - The male voice choir I was a member of back in the early 80s played host to a Russian male voice choir while they were touring the UK, and this took me right back to then. They capture that Russian male choir sound perfectly. Your adding your voice just enhanced it.
    It is a very different sound to the one that is most familiar to UK audiences, that of the Welsh male voice choir (and as a bass, I loved the sound - it is deeper!).
    We learned several of their songs including the anthem, and they several of our repertoire, and on the few combined concerts we gave would do those en-masse - nearly 150 of us on stage.
    Of course, I only learned the songs musically and as sounds, my brain being stubbornly monolingual - I've sung in Russian, Welsh, Latin, Italian, Dutch, German, and Spanish that I recall, but don't know a word of most of them, and those probably only appropriate to post-concert drinking with other choirs!
    You would not believe how quickly 150 post-concert dry throats can drink a bar dry!

    My son turned me onto Sabaton. This is a good song. I got to visit Moscow in 1986, very interesting for a Yank. My great grand mother visited, I think, before the Second World War. She was in Leningrad walking battlements somewhere and talking with her guide about some of his oppression... He was pleading with her to stop, saying that people might be listening. The noon cannon at L'Hermitage went off and he dropped to the floor thinking he was being fired on . We had a school girl show us around a school and while in the classes she stood on the party line. While between classrooms she kept asking us about the USA and if it was really like what they were taught. Heck, if anyone studies history at all (and too many don't) they know there was a race to take Berlin between the US with England and the Russian army. So those of us that do study, we know 100% that Russia was integral in winning WWII.

    As a drummer and musician, I love SABATON, as I have always preferred rock / metal to any other genre of music. Even though I am 46 years old and got to experience the 1980s rock and metal music scene, SABATON is my all time favorite band!
    As a historian who loves the WWII era more than any other time period in history, I have much respect and admiration for the Russian people and their determined, valiant effort at defeating the Nazis. Defence of Moscow is my #1 played song by SABATON, and I get chill bumps when I hear the guitar solo transition into the Russian national anthem. Though I do not understand the words, the music is gorgeous and full of emotion. I would love to visit Russia one day as a tourist!
    This, coming from an American who is patriotic, no matter what country is being showcased in one of their songs. One planet, united on our cosmic voyage through space and time!

    Unfortunately, many Americans don't know much (if anything) about their own country's efforts and sacrifices in both world wars, so not knowing about Russia isn't really surprising. And I'm American, so this isn't a knock against the US in general, it's a commentary on how little people seem to care about history. You wouldn't believe how little many Americans even know about the Revolutionary War and who the colonies won their independence from to form the US in the first place!

    I mean Russia beat Germany almost single handed. Something like 7 out of 10 of the German casualties in the war were on the eastern front. There is a debate on whether Russia could have done it without the supplies provided by the US or the intelligence information provided by the British. Russia’s contribution is often overlooked in the US due to the almost immediate souring in relations after the war. Either way no one should ever downplay the Russian contribution to defeating Germany.

      I do not think Germany could have been defeated without Lend-Lease. It is what gave both Russia and Britain the materiél both countries needed to hold off Germany, until America entered the war.

    • @arismaiden6457
      @arismaiden6457 2 роки тому +6

      @@isaiahwelch8066 well that's not actually true. Soviet industry was successfully tranfered behind the Urals soon after the nazi invasion and was able to massively outproduce german war industry. Also the soviets never lost their oil supply. The annual soviet oil production was 25-30 million tons, while the oil delivered via lend lease throughout the whole war was just 2,6 million tons. Red Army had much better artillery pieces, tanks and winter clothing, so they didn't use much the ones sent by the americans. The only part of lend lease that truly helped them were the trucks, the locomotives and the food, since much of their own railway infrastructure was destroyed and they also lacked trucks in big numbers. Surely the lend lease shortened the war by half a year, maybe a whole year. But Russians had already won the war since february 1943 really. Many reasons as to why, but I ll leave that there, because it's going to be a veeery long comment.

    • @isaiahwelch8066
      @isaiahwelch8066 2 роки тому

      @@arismaiden6457 : Have to disagree.
      The Germans had better mobility and overall discipline than the Russians did, and the early-war Panzers were heavier than the early-war Russian tanks. They also had more equipment in the field than the Russians -- especially at the beginning of Operation Barbarossa. The Germans also had more and better aircraft than the Russians, having at least 1 escort fighter and 1 heavy fighter (BF-109E, F; FW-190A) that were both better than the Russian Yak-3. The Germans also had air superiority -- and that was the most important. And why was that? Because of Kiev.
      In 1941, had Guderian ignored Kiev, he could have seized Sevastopol and possibly Moscow by the end of 1941. Point here is, the Russians didn't really beat the Germans, more so than the Germans beat themselves. When Guderian made that decision, all Stalin could do was to desperately cobble together defensive positions hastily, as the Germans had run over and/or destroyed the Russian positions in the Cacausus. With the Russians on the run and little to no artillery or armor that could take on the Germans and their equipment, nor having air superiority, Russia had really no chance at all of stopping Guderian, had he ignored Kiev and bolted towards Moscow. But that decision to turn Army Group Center back, and assist in Kiev's encirclement, is what lost the Eastern Front -- because it gave Stalin time.

    • @arismaiden6457
      @arismaiden6457 2 роки тому +5

      @@isaiahwelch8066 of course the Wermacht had superior tanks aircraft etc and much better tactics, even local numerical superiority during the first phase of operation Barbarossa. That doesn't change the fact that the Soviets had much bigger reserve forces and much greater industrial output capacity (1500 factories behind the Urals, out of the reach of Luftwaffe). Those two elements were enough to win the war in the long run, together with the emergence of a team of great generals like Zhukov Konev Rokossovsky etc. You see, I was talking about what really did happened in the Eastern Front. And as the real events unfolded, Germans had already lost the war in the East after Stalingrad. They never again had the initiative after 1942 and they were steadily but surely driven back. So again the lend lease, which was delivered mostly after Stalingrad (80% or so was sent to USSR from 1943-1945) didn't change any balance, it just gave the Soviets an extra boost to their advance, which maybe allowed them to reach Berlin a year earlier, but nothing more.
      You are talking about potential history though. Yes Guderian could ve taken Moscow if he didn't go south to Kiev, but that wasn't just a silly mistake they did by accident or something. The Nazi High Command had totally underestimated not only the red army, but the Soviet Union as a whole. They thought they could take over the whole country to the Urals in a couple of months! "Tear down the door and the rotten structure will fall apart" that was their belief. So when they decided to send Guderian forces to encircle Kiev they didn't think that would cost them at all. They did the same mistake again outside Stalingrad, stretching their lines and creating the perfect conditions for the Soviets to encircle them. But again they didn't think the Red Army was capable of such operations. Plus, even if Guderian had taken Moscow that wouldn't change much in the overall outcome. Moscow was more of a symbolic target unlike Ukraine, Caucasus and the Volga and the war would continue if Moscow fell. The Soviets could still dispatch their Siberian winter divisions and retake Moscow from the exhausted and depleted Germans in the following months anyway, since they knew Japan wouldn't attack them. The only chance for the Germans to win was to capture Volga and the Caucasus, thus solving their huge oil problem and reaching Astrakhan, cutting the supply lines of the Red Army between north and south. Since they failed to secure the oil wealth of Caucasus (lost in Stalingrad) or of the Middle East (lost at El Alamein), they couldn't sustain their war machine for much longer.
