I think he used landing gear in the wings, so using G would extend those as well. Although if that's the case he could just remove the landing gear in the wings from the G key's action group.

Steam workshop is a bad choice, KSP isn't Steam exclusive and the workshop doesn't allow you to download mods unless the Steam version is registered to your account.

The flap pods are made of landing gears.
pressing G would activate all of them.

If you look closely you can see that the flap pods is made of landing gears.
Pressing g will make it look like a landing gear porcupine.
