    Have grown oregano for years and use it in everything. I tend to get a bit when I cut it.😬
    But a few years ago I planted the golden oregano and I think it’s the French one.
    I did wander why it’s milder then the green ones. Thank you for sharing 🙂

    I like the idea of putting the dehydrator in the green house. Drying food adds a lot of humidity to the house. This isn't much of a problem with herbs, but tomatoes, for instance are about 95% water. And putting the dehydrator outside would attract bees if the food is something like berries or peaches.

      The golden oregano is definitely more delicate than the Mediterranean oregano. I have managed to kill a couple of my plants by moving them to new locations where other herbs quickly grew up tall around them. Because they were not getting enough sun, they did not survive. I have others though that are doing great

    What a beautiful color!!! yep ... definitely have to buy this herb this year. About 30 years ago, I bought a Ron Popeil (sp?) dehydrator. Looks exactly like the Nesco, and I've used it for everything from soup to nuts. This year, I finally broke down and bought a stainless steel interior Excalibur. Ive been on a plastic-purging binge for the last year. The drawback to that is it weighs a TON, so hauling it outside is not an option anymore. I don't mind the strong smell of garlic and onions, but, it sure does burn my eyes! Even the cats and the dog run for cover. LOL
    PS... LOVE your new hair ornament! Green is a good color on you :-D

      I don't mind the smell either, I love it, I only like to dehydrate outside because I do not like the extra heat in the house on hot days. Today is our first real warm day of the year so certainly not dehydrating inside!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому +4

      It seems to grow quickly and spread fast. It is funny how I ended up with this, it was a tiny little dying start I bought at the nursery for half price but it was labeled as Stevia. As I brought it back to life and it took off, I soon realized it was certainly NOT stevia so I had to do some research to figure out what it was. I figured by the look, taste, and smell, it must have been some sort of oregano so I got to looking into varieties and found it. So glad I looked it up before tossing it!

    I just bought a 4 tray Excalibur dehydrator for $149 , I spent $40 on another brand (not nesco) from Amazon and because I had it longer than 30 days I couldn't return it and it was only used 3 times and it quit heating...so disappointing when things aren't made ro last anymore. I love how you are encouraging it to grow out like that. I have been experimenting this year with different herbs and garden food plants to see what performs best out here in the extremes of AZ. I haven't tried this type of Oregano though. I've tried Mexican which grows more like a bush here. And I have regular oregano growing right now in a shady spot of my planter as I find it gets burnt up by our harsh sun here. Where would I get seeds for Golden? Thanks for the video. 👍🏼

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому +2

      I am not sure where you would find seed, I actually bought this as a mislabeled start from my local nursery and had to figure out what it was on my own (it has been labeled as stevia, but clearly was not as it grew bigger).

    Hey Heidi :-D
    I came back to this video to see if I saw any eggshells laying around on the top of your soil. I watched Mrs. Volfie from Our Halfacre Homestead this morning. Mr. Howie was putting in raised bed gardening, and Mrs. Bev was planting tomatoes. She had toasted eggshells which she crumbled and put in the bottom of each planting hole. She said if you crumble eggshells and put them on the top of the soil, it will keep away SLUGS. I hope this is something you haven't tried, and that it WORKS :-D
    Love & prayers

      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому +1

      Yes, I have tried crushed eggs shells. They do not work for our slugs, but I keep doing it anyway around the plants they like to eat the most, which is not the golden oregano, they just like to hide in it, haha :)

      Great question and I should have explained that. With oregano and mints and certain other herbs, all you need to do is gently pull up a piece of the herbs, making sure you have a good chunk that has lots of small roots coming off of it and plant it in a new area. Water in well. It may look wilted for a day or two but it will jump right back and start growing. I really should do a video on that so thanks for the idea! haha

    Sunshine? What is that in Oregon and Washington. We lived in Washington State for many many years and ended up in south Texas in ministry. Now Lord willing, we plan to return to that area in the near future. You mentioned slugs...ugh. I am not looking forward to those little creatures. They just loved to eat my impatiens and petunias. One thing though, it is so beautiful there and I miss the mountains so much. Will need to try planting the golden oregano. Anxious to taste the difference.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому

      Of course, it depends on what side of the mountains you are on. Only about 1/3 of WA is that wet, the other side is more like desert in places. I have lived on both sides and they are very, very different. Where I grew up, we only got 10" of rain per year, here we get up to 160". VERY different! haha

    • @terry320
      @terry320 7 років тому

      Yes, and eastern Washington is very conservative which is a plus. The western side...that's a different story as you know. God could clean that up real fast with an earthquake. The Lord is so patient and slow to anger, unlike me. All of my kids and grandkids live on the western side. That is really our fault, considering they were raised there, made lots of friends, so established their roots in that area.
      So how do you like living in liberal Oregon? Have they imposed rules and regulations on you or given you difficulty with living a self reliant life? We are still tossed with where to move in the Pacific Northwest. We want to be in our kids and grandkids life, but it is hard to swallow living in such a non conservative western Wa.
      Living in Idaho would be an answer, but that means being separated from the family more and we would be traveling over the mountain passes a lot. Winter would be crazy! As the Lord brings us to your thoughts, please pray for us that we would move to the area God has for us, and that we would see His will clearly without any doubt. Thanks Heidi. 🌺🌺🌺🌺

    Do u have a difficult time maintaining a charge on ur solar battery bank with so many gray days? In recent years our sun has given way to ALOT of gray, we're in an extended period of gray that has spanned 3 seasons already starting last fall. We do not have solar nor any experience with it, but definitely considering it.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 роки тому +1

      It is a challenge but we have learned to work with what we get. In mid winter, there is little we can run on our solar power but in mid summer, we get plenty but there are those odd stretches in summer where too many dark days in a row means we have to be careful with how we are using the solar. It has still been worth it though and glad we made the investment, especially with as many power outages that we have here

    I''m just starting to plant more herbs and experiment with them....since you also have slugs, how do you deal with them other than picking them off and feeding to your chickens?? They are eating my plants (broccoli, kale, etc.) Ugh!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  7 років тому +2

      It is a constant battle. All the natural methods people constantly recommend simply do not work for us where we have tenacious slugs and get up to 160" of rain per year. However, they do say they work well for them so if you have not tried the beer in a dish, Diatomaceous Earth, crushed egg shells, or copper wire, you may want to give them a try. One thing I do where I am able, is to take a slug poison like Slug Line, and put it at the bottom of a jar tilted on its side where it stays out of my garden but will attract the slugs away from my plants and kill them. This is very helpful but I simply cannot use this everywhere because I do not want the dogs to get into it and I do not want it in my garden as I try to keep everything organic and natural.

It's worked great and this year I'm gonna try and make fruit leathers for my grands. I seen them eating a fruit roll up the daycare gave them and I cringed in worry because of the red dye. I have the trays to make them so I'm gonna stock them up and seal them in Mason jars. They'll be tickled cause I'll let them help with "cooking" them. I so love that they love helping me. Pure joy!

    I have never seen a chicken eat a slug. Do you throw them in whole and/or alive?

      Mine do not eat the big ones but will gobble the small ones right down. I have seen videos though of other people's chickens eating the big ones whole. Crazy!

    Don't get it at Amazon...much more expensive..$59.99 and on "wheatgrasskits.com" they are $39.99. Mine hangs from my ceiling in my dining room...a little to windy outside.

      I have found many things can be WAY more at Amazon, some things are less. Always wise to shop around! Thank you Becky!
