I can't fathom how much painstaking labor and masterful attention to detail must have gone into making curved barrels before mechanical saws & other modern machinery...
i'v seen my dad do it by hand he was truly a master of his trade , they don't make them like that anymore that's for sure . I looked at him like wtf . He worked at Montana wines for over 25 years and lost his job because he was always pissed on the job lol . Bit of legend that guy , he had a crazy IQ of 180 lol . He was insane as also , prick use to make me feel so small , he was a bloody music teacher also and new almost all the trees and plants in the forest and was a ranger bush man etc. Use to cut down trees with hand saws at one stage before chain saws came along . He got me to cut down some tree with him with a hand saw , shit was some real hard work at 12 lol . Prick could build anything and new all this shit about electronics , bloody gun nut also . Use to hunt rabbits for dinner with a slug gun lol . Always stoned as also , bit of a gangsta I guess with all his weed crops . I guess that's why he had heaps of firearms back then . Even drove a v 8 ford felcon we use to pass out from the fumes on the way home sometimes from town to the country where he lived . He use to have this tool he called a ADZS to shave the wood . I would say he was a criminal of sorts or free thinker , could read almost two novels in a day
I heard he's going to sell it online soon, so you might want to get Heyzmar's Woodworking Bible. Even though it's not 100% complete it has some solid plans.
I have jsut read Ken Kilby books, and saw this video. I enjoyed it. I wanted to put out a woodworking tribute to the lost craft of coopers. I am seeking your permission to use about 60 seconds of your video without sound. Natually, I credit your name on the video and and in the end credits.
To Triwood1973, I have been meaning to ask you this, but where do you find all these how it's made videos and how can you upload these videos?:D Are you an authorized owner of these videos? Is there any way I can upload these how it's made videos without dealing with copyright infringement? :D Your videos are amazing and educational:D I hope you keep making some more in the near future. They are absolutely amazing! -Truly & thankfully by: batistableeds4gold
I call BS on the world's largest wine barrel- that holds, "7,650,000 liters of wine if it was ever filled" That size the video claims would be a shape 64 feet to a side. Heidelberg castle claims the world's largest wine barrel and it only holds 220,000 liters. It has a dance floor on top of it.
at the end of this video his comment was not appreciated. He does all that work and the only comment they can think of is look out for pieces of wood in your wine really?
Would much rather appreciate a shot of whiskey (Jack Daniels) thank you lol. Much more alcohol, and it tastes better in my opinion. Especially with a coke-a-cola chaser!
what about making a barell the old fasion way.. when modern machines are not invented yet, i mean back in the day when people are just using less tools.
well, then they would cut the wood by hand and sand it by hand.... but the process would be pretty much the same... I mean, they did have fire and water when they started making wine barrels, you know...
+kei koruno I saw a guy making staves by hand once. He had a special workbench with a foot-operated clamp that would hold a stave in place when he pressed down on a pedal. He removed material with a draw knife while it was held in the clamp until he had cut it down to the appropriate geometry and dimensions. I assume his methods for assembly were the same as those in the video.
A skilled cooper can make a barrel (approximately 55 gallon size) by hand in about ten hours. Using machines for the more tedious repetitive tasks the barrel can be made in 2.5 to 3 hours. This is according to an expert barrel maker in France who has a coopering school right in his factory. The end result is a much better barrel still make to exacting standards in one third the time and extremely less cost. The great part is the best coopers still know how to do it by hand they simply take advantage of precision machines. Break that down to the price of the bottle of wine and you can see how they save people money.

Holy cow! The amount of work is astonishing.
0:52 - Great, simple visualization. Well done.
Such hard, skillful work. I'd love to have a trade like this
I have no idea why I just watched this video but that was actually pretty awesome.

no eye protection on that lathe! These barrels are amazing; I just don't want the man's eye out!
Thanks again Triwood.

Very interesting video about wine barrels!
Thanks for sharing!
VinoEnology
not straw but reed (leaves) are put between the staves.they will soak up any liquid and expand. and the barrel will be for sure -wine proof -.
Great video, very interesting..
Love it ! Great Work, New Subscriber from a fellow wine barrel artist :)
woah! like the bending part~
I LOVE SMELL OF WOOD
You couldn't pay me to not wear safety glasses while sanding that barrel
may be that's why he gets paid.

Bet it took forever before power tools where invented.
What's the lifespan and how many times is being reused for different liquors?
for whine you can use it 3years atleast the older man in the film told me it because he's my grandpa
Oh, and yeah, the older cooper of the two has half a finger. His little one.
For some reason there's 41 people who don't like how a wine barrel is made...

@haimaphil maybe u should make one
and to those of you who want to by one of these barrels, it will set you back about 1200 Euro.
5:49 those fingers have been destroyed over the years.
So your actually drinking burnt charcoal wood in the wine.
I'M TELLING PEWDIE

no becuz those things r much more necessary
Now add a barbarian in it
Or goblins( Clash Royale! )
And we just keep destroying these in games

AFAIK Jack Daniel is also seasoned in Oak wood barrels before bottling.

can't do it no more. .. black lives matter.
Karl, this was Germany, they were all about master craftsmen and skill labor, not free unskilled labor.
BARRELS!!!!!!!
which one is Tommy....lol
why curved though??!
To withstand the pressure which might develop by alcohol evaporation during storage.
1 person slipped and hit the disliked button, what a shame

I made it with woodprix handbooks !
Stodoys is full of amazing tips. It helped me a lot.
Go to woodprix if you'd like to build it yourself.
My husband used these plans from woodprix and he's very satisfied.
I made it myself thanks to woodprix website.
it's sad that people cut down trees just to make alcohol
do it yourself , go to woodprix page and learn how .
