Michael Jordan 2003-02-23: 30 points v MVPs Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitski

  • Even at 40 years old, Jordan could still dominate a game. In this game, MJ faces the NBAs MVPs for the past 3 seasons; 2 time MVP Steve Nash (MVP 2005, 2006) and Dirk Nowitski (MVP 2007) and outscores both of them. Jordan had a quiet start to the game, missing his first 6 shots, but takes over in the second half, scoring 30 points on 14-26 shooting and added nine rebounds. Even at 40 and playing with a knee injury, MJ showed again why he is the best ever against today's top players

    Are you f#ckin serious??!!!! This dude is takin these young boys off the dribble, stealing the ball, blocking shots etc.. They say he couldn't do today what he did back in the day(Zone). Well he's doin it and he's doin at 40!! WTF??

    i agree. jordan's hopstep is just so natural. i dont know how to discribe. he is not forcing it like other, judging by how light the step actually is. the whole move is just smooth, i think that's why he got away with a lot of travelling call just because he is too smooth.

    jesus look at this 40 year old guy. he still owns everybody. if he played for even an average team, he would have seen another nba final. he is still unguardable at the age of 40. this is just crazy.

    Not even a young Jordan, but a "healthier" Jordan, would easily have his way.
    Lets face it, he was never gonna be 100% healthy, but even this is what a 75% healthy MJ would've done.

    So many amazing plays here: look at how he sniffs out that play at 19 seconds and cuts in front of Dirk to intercept the pass; just tremendous anticipation. Look how quickly he reads the defense at 1:08 to get to a spot for an open shot, and how he sets up the shot with a perfect hop step and by bringing the ball high between the defenders' hands -- no one ever used the hop step as well as Jordan in such a variety of contexts.

    (cont.) Walton then explains that when you absolutely needed a rebound, Jordan would always come up with them. They revisited this notion a couple of times throughout the game. And then, as if on cue, Jordan grabs about 4 crucial rebounds in the final 3 minutes of the game, including two offensive iirc. Walton then essentially says "see? I was correct." Jordan was a fantastically underrated rebounder.

    i can imagine how deadly MJ can be if he was twice as fast on every move he executed, he would have blown the Mavs out! MJ is and will always be a LEGEND!!!

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 років тому +4

    Look at the perfect reverse dribble on Van Excel at 2:55 (no one today executes reverse dribbles at full speed as well as Jordan did), and then the perfect fake on Nowitzki (he had to fake out to the side to get Dirk jumping outwards so he had room to step through), and then look how he protected the ball on the step-through, avoiding reaching hands and allowing him a clean look at the rim. Perfect.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 років тому +3

    The insane block on Van Exel at 3:20. Some people like to act as though Jordan got all his steals and blocks by gambling, but here you see him perfectly playing the off-the-ball screen action which was trying to free up Dirk, and only flashing across the lane for the block when it's apparent that Van Exel was taking it all the way himself, and when Van Exel could not see Jordan coming. Perfect timing and great effort from a 40 year old.

    Just a great game here. Thanks for whoever posted this. Retro stuff is good. I love how Nash and nowitzki, especially Nash grew up watching Michael and then getting a chance to play against your hero. It's good stuff.

    the move on 2:21 is just classic jordan. to me that's the most effective crossover ever in the nba. jordan didnt have to drible extra for same or better effect.
    i was watching the 69 point game and he has a crossover jumper just like that, the quick change of direction without losing any momentum is just beautiful.

    great to see you post again jxn23. i like how you can really see his speed getting slow. but still he managed to score no matter what. he is just so complete that no other nba player can compare with.
    looks how little extra move he needed to score a basket. it is just crazy.

    If you play and your older, what happens when you take time off?? It takes months to regain any skills and endurance, even then you've lost gains you'll never recover again. Even after his first retirement, he wasn't the same, although enough to be the dominant player of the day. Imagine if he never retired, there would be no arguments on who was the greatest.

  • @kOrOne79

    I think it's safe to say that he would have been better, at least in his first year with the Wizards.

  • @jordanlover23
    @jordanlover23 17 років тому +2

    The work he does to get open at 4:38, and then the shot over a great defender. Poking the ball away from Nash at 4:57 and then nearly blocking his shot after the recovery (Jordan needed to ganble there because they were down and were trying to force a TO). The final shot at 5:10 under extreme duress. Just an amazing game overall.

    Incidentally, at the 1:05 mark, the beginning of that exchange between Walton and Tolbert begins with Walton calling Jordan "the best rebounder in the league back in the day," to which Tolbert responds by saying that Barkley was. (cont.)

  • @jordanlover23

    How easily he gets past Adrian Griffin at 1:27 despite missing the shot. The entire sequence at 1:58 where he reads the defense perfectly and changes direction on a dime, plus the little hop step (again, no one has ever used the hop step more effectively) and finish as he jumps sideways off the hop step. At 2:21, look at how he goes between the legs and then brings the ball HIGH through the reaching defenders to split them on the hop step (again).

  • @andgar923
    @andgar923 17 років тому +2

    His first step would've been respected. This is HUGE cuz it opens up the rest of his game. This is what kept him from shooting a higher percentage. It allowed defenders to play him that much tighter since he couldn't blow by them.

    I know the following are alot of "would've" and "could've"....
    But what if MJ didn't rush his return and started to prepare himself accordingly?
    What if Artest never broke his ribs?

  • @andgar923
    @andgar923 17 років тому

    His vertical wasn't the same of course, but if he would've had at the very least, 5 more inches on it, his jumper and fade would've been that much more hard to stop. Combined with a faster first step...he's even that much harder to defend.
    He's shooting more ft and his percentage is up to .460 around that much.

    Technique is what allowed Michael to play that old. No argue about who´s better than Mike... No kobe, No Lebron, No Carter... they don´t have it. Kobe is the closest but he won´t be like Mike, he has gotten the highest level he can. Lebron is still young, but if you are intelligent you´ll notice immediately that he won´t have Jordan´s style never. Vince... no comments!

      @boogieloo1831 7 років тому +3

      cruz loera - no. This is a different era with soft defensive rules and yes MJ would destroy today's league. As for Boston and LA - those two teams were in their primes when MJ played in the 80s. He was drafted to a 27-55 without a single player from his 91 championship team. The Bulls losses in the playoffs to Detroit were about the development of Scottie Pippen and H. Grant - their development and the implementation of the Triangle is what got them over the hump. MJ dominated everyone of those series but alas, him alone was not enough.

    Lol, Lebron will be just like kobe. They will age horribly. Its already happening to kobe. Those are two players who's athleticism will die with age. MJ's body was just evolution wise.. years ahead of everyone else. Only centers are playing at 40 years old because of the lack of movement they can still use their size
