    I’m half way through her kinder year. It’s not going at all as planned. I had such a beautiful vision and feel like I’m failing. Between life happening and covid it is what it is. She’s an only child. I watched this before we started and I’m watching again today months later. Cuz I loved it and I know it will help bring me back to where I need to go to finish out the best I can. She is 6 but has a fall birthday so she’s older for K. But she still loves her nursery rhymes. Thanks foe the great video.

    I added this Little piggy to my wish list. I love that it has the sheet music with it. A great gentle introduction to reading music!

    This is such a encouragement to hear someone say the best thing you can do for your child is to keep it simple and allow them to learn through life. It's easy to watch other UA-cam mothers have their children doing all kinds of curriculum and feel as if you are to have your child doing that at a very young age.

    • @joycherrick
      @joycherrick  3 роки тому +4

      Yeah, there's a lot of competition to see who can do the most with their children. But really, we need to focus on learning about our God, child development, learning about education. Then, we will have the tools our children need when they are ready. Pushing kids too young won't help them. But, letting them learn and grow and explore God's world without the pressures of academics, that will give them a firm foundation! You've got this!

    So much wisdom here! I LOVE how you keep kindergarten simple and wait on their development. But I also love how you address the need to have systems in place for meals, laundry etc.
    That’s huge! I think so many homeschool mamas get burnt out because they aren’t organized in life at home before tackling the education. As mamas we are modeling what we want our children to learn and if we can’t show order and discipline why should they? Thankful to have found you! I am looking at CM method this year after being a part of a CC community for years. Finding your videos has been a blessing!

    I so appreciate you sharing the simplicity of Kindergarten. I am starting Kinder with my one and only. I love what you are sharing... but she just turned 6 and I feel like she is past some of these things but yet so much wisdom in this message. I have been feeling like there is TOO much that I want to do and I really want a gentle start which is why I waited until she was 6. We do read aloud and include rhymes and such. She can count to 100 and such but I don't want to push her ahead. She's my only one and yet I worry am I holding her back to keep her little. I was very close to doing a formal CM Year one until I saw some samples and felt it was toooooo much in regards to writing and copywork and things like that. Uggg I need to pray over this. We are for sure doing nursery rhymes and classics as well as a calendar time. We LOVE being outside. I have not played with her in her mud kitchen much this summer, I NEED to do that before we get snow. I will be so sad when she outgrows it.

    Could you share, perhaps in another video sometime, about your method of family meals? That's a huge area that I struggle with, probably mainly because it wasn't modeled for me, my family did not sit down to eat together, sadly. I don't want that to be my children's experience!

    I am seriously thankful for this video. I'm a first generation home educator and have felt getting started is so daunting.
    But seriously between this video and reading your Feb 2019 NSHack post I think something clicked finally. I understand what is being said when people say, facilitating family life as education is a culture, or way of life. Education doesn't start on the day you turn 6... lol it's like giving a good, God glorifying education is almost so simple that we don't get it, and over complicate it.
    For example, I think so many moms out there who are quick to say "I could never homeschool" don't realize they are already doing the things that foster learning. i.e. reading, exploratory play, or even pushing in a swing.
    I also have heard moms say there wouldn't be enough time in the day for homeschooling so when you explained about getting regular rhythms down and addressing what it is like in your home currently, it was like 💡 having the discipline to just getting the basics down is foundationally important.
    It finally makes so much sense to think about education as not this marginalized thing that a government building provides. It's doing life well. I don't mean to overstate it but that just is so simple! I want to make it more complicated lol
    It was also really helpful to have you walk through a Nature Study, how to get started, how to learn with them, what to expect without crushing it with idealism.
    Maybe it's bc there is soooo much out there as far as possibilities, newbies like myself seize up. I have to be intentional to become a "learner" again, I think I've realized I just want to get tasks done and live a life of leisure.
    I so appreciate your wisdom and the hard work you've put in. Thanks for distilling it, and bringing us into your thought process.

      This is so great to hear! You are so right it's those basic home rhythms that are the seeds of ours and our children's education. We want to live well - not just be prepared to earn a bunch of money so we can pour into a system. Education is about living well and it's a life-long pursuit- not just something we can get from reading one book and then "PRESTO!" here's an educated man!
      I'm still learning and growing. If you've come to the place that you mentioned, you may enjoy the book For the Family's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay. It's her second book after For the Children's Sake - and it focuses on the value of home in everyone's life. It's very encouraging and will feed some of those ah-ha moments you've been enjoying!
      I'm so glad were encouraged! Keep learning!

      I know this is old. But watching children all move to another classroom without you is more damaging than not being able to read yet. The public school system is such a failure.

    Would love to see a video on preschool! My boys are 4, 2 & 9 months. There are so many opinions & curriculums out there, even for preschool. Also, how would you do nature study when you live in a manicured suburban development?

    • @joycherrick
      @joycherrick  3 роки тому

      All of my
      nature study books help for suburban living. Just start by learning the names of the plants and trees in your yard and around your neighborhood. Then you can move onto birds! Just little steps will reap big rewards! Pick ONE type of thing to learn at a time! Trees are an easy place to start and it’s amazing how many varieties there are in one small community

    Hi joy, loving learning from your experience. I’d like the link to the morning time memory verse list you mentioned? Also, any tips for homeschooling my six year old
    Daughter (who would rather be read to than read herself, or okay outside) while wrangling two rowdy boys (almost 2 and almost 4) ? I find my youngest boy just can’t handle me reading to the big kids, he pulls the house apart!!! He’s full of beans! I think I need to use his nap time but by then I’m exhausted myself. Anyway would love any thoughts or ideas you might have.

      I have a two year old and have found that reading at meals and recruiting dad to read at bedtime has been helpful! I have a “Mini Morning Time” video that may also be helpful as I had to cut out some things this year bc if a busy two year old. It may help to remember that this season will pass and there will be more time for reading aloud at various seasons. Even finding a way to engage the two year old with the older children in a “circle time” style time with nursery rhymes and finger plays would be fun for all and may help you! I also have been sure to set out special toys for my toddler to give her something to do while we work. Another thing may be to put on an audio book while you all listen and you can sit with your little ones and engage them with a quiet game while you all listen for a set period of time.
      I will need to find the link to share...

      Here’s the list we used this past year: docs.google.com/document/d/1hsh04yoHLrTCxPgzaoiv8C1UBdfDZyJQR55s732Y42o/edit I really like the hook Harp and Laurel Wreath for getting poem ideas and Cindy Rollins Morning a time Handbook for additional ideas for scripture and other things to memorize!

      Thank you so much!! Love those ideas. I need to look for some special toys for James (the almost two years old). He mainly just loves his tools and hammering everything 😂😅 but I should put together a special basket for him... I love the advice you gave of keeping in mind it is a season. What you said validated what I already try to do at meal time and bed time, so thank you for that! I was a primary school teacher so I am trying to unlearn pretty much everything I was taught about how an education should look! I think I push my daughter too hard and she reacts by resisting. Thank you for your lovely videos and information.

    Writing a full sentence by 1st grade!? I don't remember reading or writing until 2nd or 3rd grade. Why do schools keep pushing kids to learn things earlier and earlier? Why put so much pressure on them? It doesn't make sense to me.
