From that great album, „In Through the Out Door“, recorded November-December 1978 at Polar Sound Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, but released 7 December 1979. Fantastic song. Always loved it.
Their final studio album Plant and Jones did most of the writing Bonham was an alcoholic Page was a heroin addict at the time Plant wanted a different sound to stay current with the audience So they came up with fool in the rain RIP - John Bonham
I think that this song was inspired by the band watching some World Cup footage that was in Argentina in 78. I guess this song was inspired by those latin beats, fortunately. Bonzo’s drumming is something else. Amazing the breadth of musical knowledge that Zeppelin pulled from.
Bonham's tribute to Bernard Purdie of New Orleans and the Purdie Shuffle. Peerless drumming, inventive guitar tonality, Latin inspired keys and a happy Plant melody. In other words, another great Zeppelin track. According to Plant, it was inspired by the World Cup coverage from Brazil that year (1978), and their outro music on the live feed.
'Fool in the Rain' is a shuffling Latin rock song which breaks into a samba rhythm, inspired by the theme music of the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. Overview 'Fool in the Rain' was rehearsed in a number of different styles at Polar Studio, with singer Robert Plant selecting the best version to record.
I've found it interesting that everyone always revels in the instruments and doesn't mention Plant's contribution. The only member of the band who has consistently maintained relevancy for the last 40 years since the demise of Zep. Granted Page and Jonesy have recorded and performed since Bonham's death. Plant has singularly grown and expanded his craft and has been popularly accepted beyond the others.
LED ZEP SECRET: In INSIDE sleeve of the original release LP had a hidden secret. It was shown as a bar scene made up of Dots. Like an artful pattern. Well, if you wet a brush, and run it along the black dots, colors would appear and you can water color in the entire inside sleeve. Just like the Front cover of the album suggests... a swipe with a paint brush... Brilliant even in the sleeve designs.
This has always been a favorite of mine, with that stellar Bonham drum work, but now I can add to it those equally entertaining HarriBest calypso dance moves!
I've heard numerous cover versions of this song, but absolutely NO ONE can duplicate John Bonham's drum pattern accurately to replicate what he was doing - not even his son.
The band members did spend a lot of time in the Caribbean where they were inspired to write D'yer maker. Bonzos Montreaux was recorded in the Caribbean as well.
Led Zeppelin went to South America , I think 1976 to see the World Cup.. soccer. And they got some inspiration from the music and put it on the ITTOD album.
Notice the album cover is all a sepia tone, except the “swipe” of color. This was a hint. I owned the vinyl back when it came out. The inner album liner had a picture (I can’t remember what it was anymore) that was made up of little black dots like old newsprint photos. If you took a damp cloth and “swiped” across the dots, they would release their colored dye and you could paint the liner! Besides the great music, I’ve always remembered that cool feature!
iirc, there were multiple versions of the album cover. They were the same scene, but taken from different angles (perhaps one for each person in the room?).
The album cover was based on a bar in New Orleans except the actual bar is barely the size of a bus shelter. They recreated it in London and much bigger as per the album covers.
When I first tuned in, I thought someone had finally located a Sasquatch (just kidding; it was the coat). I really got into Led Zeppelin during my college days (late 70s/early 80s). When this album came out, I bought my copy. It was very different from the Zep I was used to but I liked it. You should check out, "Hot Dog" on the same album.
The Bonzo triplet shuffle is in the manual for drummers looking to up their game and stand out from the rest of the timekeepers in bands. It can be difficult to learn, but if you play by ear, you're probably a bit more adept to pick up the nuances.
How did you predict it was going to change!? Definitely did! You have a good ear for music. Another song I love! And love the Spanish element to it as well. 💗
I could be wrong but I read somewhere that the lyrics had to do with when Robert plant was in Orleans and watching all the people and it was in the rain
Alison, you picked a bona fide all-time classic with this amazing song! Have you heard the isolated track of Bonzo's drumming on it? If not, give it a listen--and be sure to listen to the whole thing, as there's a pause in the middle that could fool (pun intended) someone into thinking the video was over. Here's the link: *"Fool In The Rain" isolated drum track:* ua-cam.com/video/lWnhz1ZcF74/v-deo.html
No, I have to say that I would never have recognised that as Led Zep without Percy's vocal so I'm a bit taken aback by it. I think I need to hear it again without my preconceptions before I can comment on it properly.
Not only was he the best drummer ever , he was the best human , the best bicycle , the best sandwich , the best aquatic creature . Some really informed comments from musical genius only the British public service can supply . " I'm not a sad dweeb , I like Zeppelin". PS I have a degree in everything (not gender studies though).
@@felixd.4150 It's not the "Purdie shuffle (sic)". It's the Bonham Shuffle. It is based on the Purdie Shuffle. It is different. Just like the Rosanna Shuffle is based on the Purdie Shuffle AND the Bonham Shuffle and is DIFFERENT.
One of the greatest drummers to ever live on this planet ❤ Inspired by the Purdy Shuffle
One of the greatest recordings in history. This is the Mt. Olympus of drumming.
The drum is the highlight in this song, off the charts; that shuffle.
Oh yes!
Bonham’s take on the Purdie shuffle.
@@gasaholic47 it’s actually two shuffles combined
Hell yeah
This really shows the genius of Bonham on those drums!! Can never be disappointed with Zeppelin!! They are so diverse!
Two shuffles at the same time!!! Sick
It's the seamless way they can change that is masterful
From that great album, „In Through the Out Door“, recorded November-December 1978 at Polar Sound Studios in Stockholm, Sweden, but released 7 December 1979. Fantastic song. Always loved it.
One of my favorites from this album and from their whole catalogue. Such great transcendent drumming.
Their final studio album
Plant and Jones did most of the writing
Bonham was an alcoholic
Page was a heroin addict at the time
Plant wanted a different sound to stay current with the audience
So they came up with fool in the rain
RIP - John Bonham
Plant was even a wreck at this point. This is very much John Paul Jones album
So THATS why this album has so many key parts, I thought it was just the 80s sound creeping up on Zeppelin
One of the greatest songs of all time, Bonham was a genius on drums!
I think that this song was inspired by the band watching some World Cup footage that was in Argentina in 78. I guess this song was inspired by those latin beats, fortunately. Bonzo’s drumming is something else. Amazing the breadth of musical knowledge that Zeppelin pulled from.
The fuzz on Jimmy's guitar is beautiful

“Really like the drums.” Yeah. Iconic shuffle groove of Bernard Purdie but with Bonham’s power.
It is NOT the Purdie Shuffle, it's the Bonham Shuffle, built on the Purdie Shuffle. Two DIFFERENT things.
This has always been a favorite of mine, with that stellar Bonham drum work, but now I can add to it those equally entertaining HarriBest calypso dance moves!
That coat's a cold piece, nephew.
What a song to go out on! This was their last U.S. single
I've heard numerous cover versions of this song, but absolutely NO ONE can duplicate John Bonham's drum pattern accurately to replicate what he was doing - not even his son.
New cover available, Check out Yoyoka just premiered

Those drums, and that breakdown. Great reaction!
Zep has always been one of the most iconic talents to walk the earth. 🤘🤘
As a professional air drummer, John Bonham was my most difficult client.
LOL

Best marimba solo in rock
Best drummer ever. Watch him play.Looks like music is talking to him.
one of my fav led zeppelin tunes!!!!!!
Great reaction, one of my all-time favorite Zeppelin tracks. I must say our man looks like a groovy majestic lion in that jacket and I'm here for it 😍
I'm dancing too!!
Great Bonzo work in this song. One of my favorite Zep songs. Alison, great pick!!! You nailed the tempo change prediction Harri.
I love your jacket Harri
Bernard Purdy inspired drum pattern by Bonzo. Called the 'Purdy Shuffle'!
Another one spouting ignorance. It's the Bonham Shuffle. It is NOT the Purdie Shuffle. It is inspired by the Purdie Shuffle. It is different. SMFH.
I have liked this since day one great !

The Bonham Shuffle!
Believe it or not ..one of Jimmy’s best solos.
Zeppelin disco .. 1980 .. disco was in .. rock was old . The greats did disco .. the who eminence front.. the dead did shakedown street.. ..
Top 3 in my Zeppelin playlist, the change-ups are killer! And you rock that coat, Harri!
Zeppelin were very versatile. They liked to challenge themselves and weren't afraid to try different styles of music
One of Page's few dalliances with the kazoo. 😁
Not
When Led Zeppelin was in the Caribbean and South America is where this inspiration came from
Probably my favorite zeppelin tune.
Great song, big hit it Canada!
Bravo on predicting teh "change," and I hope you were rewarded (I wrote this before the change coems)!
bassist John Paul Jones and vocalist Robert Plant were inspired by samba beats that played during the 1978 FIFA World Cup tournament in Argentina.
Bonzo steals the show! Very nice request Allison! Kinda has the same vibe as Robert Plant solo track "In the Mood". Very pleasant reaction Harri!
Thanks, Greybeard! I was thinking of requesting “In the Mood” or “Big Log” in the future.
Not a Zepplin fan ..however I've all ways help a piece of luv 2 this song

Piano sounds like Dollar Brand... Whistles and percussionlike Osibisa.
Drumming awesome.Lifted from Bernard Purdey Home at Last, on Aja, Steely Dan. Toto used this on Africa as well.

John Bonham at his grooviest best.
Talk about unlimited range, could they get they get any more universal?
