"No one wants the Rose/Dimitri romance" -- I was literally READING THE BOOKS BECAUSE OF THOSE TWO. I so look forward to seeing what you think of Tasha by the end of the series. Vampire Academy got me into reading, and has been my all-time favorite book series for more than 10 years and I've re-read them multiple times. You've got interesting opinions.
The idea of the Moroi, Dhampir and Strigoi are based in Romanian history. Richelle mead based the three types of vampires directly off of that. And all the St Vladimirs stuff and church stuff is all Romanian history. You can’t say that Richelle made it up because she did not, she took it from folk tales.
The terms exist I'm Slavic, so I'm aware. Everything else is an interpretation and a deliberate choice, it's a fictional story (more so a fantasy). For example, Moroi technically could be interpreted as either evil ghosts/spirits or vampires. She used it as a type of vampire because it serves her purposes and fits into the story. Having three types of a vampires is also just a creative choice so her story works. All places have religious roots. She decided to incorporate it. None of these are negative things, I'm just trying to illustrate that in a fictional work everything is up to the author and their vision.
I'm so glad to see that early 2000's media had therapy in it! and not as a sexy thing XD this is a series I will never read probably but I'm very intrigued!!!
I was shocked how much time these books spent talking about mental heath in general. You would think it’s the topic that only became somewhat normalised in 2015+.
Ok I’m gonna stop commenting now because I’m a Romitri shipper even though the age gap is a little wrong, I just can’t not love them together. And it’s fiction and they are literal vampires, plus 24 and 17 almost 18 is a lot better than 16 and 186 like TVD. And I cannot agree with you wanting Dimitri to be with tasha✋🏻 but I agree that I hated Adrian at first, I love Adrian in the spin-off series tho.
@@BooksWaffles You mentioned being a lesbian anyways so I get that✋🏻🤣 I’m bi and I personally love it but I know that a LOT of va fans have a big issue with it. I honestly hope they age Dimitri down to 21 in the Tv series because 24 is a little old and will create a lot of controversy and I think Dimitri being 21 is more realistic that he falls in love with Rose and he isn’t actually a teacher, just a guardian at the school and mentor for Rose.
The word your looking for in the third book meaning storm is “Buria” LMAO I didn’t even have to open a book I just knew that by heart. I’ve read these books too many times
Oh my gosh. I think my brain glitched a couple of times because you brought up such clever interpretations. 1) the church-going vampires as a way of appeasing hesitant conservative readers. I assumed it was a relic of private schools, some of which tend to be steeped in faith-based gathering every once in a while. I supposed it was Vampire Hogwarts, a place where the characters are placed in a much bigger context. But, I think you are onto something: maybe the church going acts as shorthand for shared moral codes. I agree with you on the shady implications of what a Strigoi actually is. I wish I had more time with different points of view in the series. A Strigoi's point of view could've balanced things a little. Or at least raised more stakes. Can't wait for part 2!
I can't 100% prove that religion was included for these reasons or not but it's my working theory rn. It also could be a part of the story because the author believed that it would make the book more believably Russian-inspired since the common idea is that we're orthodox (true) and very religious (arguable, depends on the region).
I’m on my night shift and I’m finally able to watch this video, so I’ll probably pop up a bunch of comments as I watch first verify important question, where have you bough да но tshirt?? I need it in my life. Russian sites are ok, I live here
you're absolutely right about thinking rose has comphet!! i thought the same thing too while reading it haha. im glad that it's a series that values female friendships but Man is it fruity sometimes. after finishing the series i had to find people talking about if they thought the same thing and im glad you touched on it! i really feel like if you want to believe that she has comphet in the series and how she deals with it, it makes rose's character waaayy more interesting....
This has been my favourite book series for like 9 years so I’m super excited for the tv series. Julie Plec is a longtime fan so I’m hopeful it’s good and not cheesy like the movie
@@BooksWaffles you're welcome ! The German voice actor did a better job, but it was hard not to cringe about the way they pronounced Russian words 😂 (grew up bilingual, my parents are Russian)
loved your analysis, very in depth! And although I am a big fan of these books, I do agree that there are some problematic elements in the romance department especially. Quick sidenote just FYI: Rose cannot get pregnant with Dimitri. It is said in the first book that 2 dhampirs together cannot procreate (only dhampir+moroi or moroi+moroi can - Rose actually compares this genetic oddity with mules, who are also sterile animals). That's why it is considered so culturally innappropriate for two guardians to be in a relationship: because they would not further their species by being together so it would be a "waste" :)
SPOILERS.. actually if you read bloodlines you will know that Rose and Dimitri possibly CAN have children but only after the 5th VA book and they didn’t even know until the 6th book of bloodlines and it was because Dimitri turned from dhampir- Strigoi and then back to dhampir. But yeah two dhampirs can’t have kids unless they turn into a Strigoi and are brought back by a spirit user and it only happened once in the entire world of VA.
I haven't read the books nor plan to, but I was very entertained by your video! It's always interesting to look back on books and while putting them in the context of their publication still addressing the misogyny, ableism etc. Also I'm glad you enjoyed the third book! Because 'hate' reading a series might be fun for the viewer, but as a reader it can be draining.
I wouldn’t say i forced myself to read the first two books. There is something addictive about the series in general but I can’t really explain what. Plus because of themes it read almost like an older ya urban fantasy so I didn’t mind it. The third book though is where I feel the series takes a turn and becomes really good.
I DNF the series in the middle of the 3 book when it was beeing published because I coudn't care less about Rose and her drama. Years later I decided to continue (aparently I had stopped at the part that turned the serie good go figure) I struggled through book 3 without rereading the others and it really hooked me. I finished that serie in a week and the secuel serie. Nowadays everything is a blur, I only remember liking a lot more the protagonist of the secuel serie, I believe she is presented in the last books of the original serie. Very interesting video, I'll be waiting for the second part.

Not judging you, it is fictional and it's just not for me😄

Makes sense now lol Buria is Буря and it does mean storm in Russian.

It was a present from my colleagues. Here's the website kkaravaev.com/product-category/katalog/. They have all kinds of office-related designs.

Well, I have to admit (begrudgingly) that a lot of it is wishful thinking BUT is it fun to look a their relationship through gay lenses? Yes.

Буря is the word they were using for Storm :)
Can confirm that буря does mean storm. The voice actor fucked the pronunciation up. Thank you💖

Oh, I thought they can it's just not going to be a dhampir baby. My pregnant Rose theory is no longer viable then.

Awaiting part two
It's been 9 months lol I'm flopping so hard!
Everyone who reads these books can agree that the first two are so boring compared to the last 4 books
photo of yourself as the therapist 🤣🤣🤣
I thought who if not me?
