- Nostalgia-packed and ready to channel the ’90s, these one-bowl beauties from Sohla El-Waylly’s cookbook, “Start Here: Instructions for Becoming a Better Cook,” recall the kind of store-bought cookies you may have tucked into your lunchbox. But these Rainbow Rave Cookies are even better because they’re homemade.

Are we going to get another Gingerbread show this year with Sohla, Priya, and their spouses? 😬
I love how despite being a highly skilled chef, capable of creating some amazingly refined dishes, Sohla never considers herself "too good" for ingredients like imitation vanilla extract or storebought shortcuts when it fits the recipe. That's why I love all her videos so much, she's not trying to show off but instead you can always rest assured her recipes are made to get the most bang for your buck. If she asks you to put in extra work/money, you can believe it's worth it ^^
it’s widely accepted in the pastry world that there’s vanilla, then there’s “vanilla” 😉
that fake vanilla has made a footprint as it’s own thing
The crazy thing is... the imitation vanilla was sort of a key ingredient. I have no idea how she managed to arrive at the blend of natural and imitation vanilla to get the flavor profile right - I can't really tell the difference in the first place.
@@bdellovibrioo5242I think it’s because we associate the flavor of imitation vanilla with a lot of the store bought vanilla cookies and cakes that we grew up eating in the US, so it creates a very nostalgic taste
@@bdellovibrioo5242oh wait didn’t realize she more or less said that in the video
As a former caterer now personal chef, I love how Sohla is still doing her thing! Also, despite having to add maybe an extra half to whole teaspoon more, I never downed imitation vanilla because you still can get quite a nice flavor like the real thing.
"everything comes together in one bowl" is the magic phrase that guarantees ill be baking these this week
I appreciate how well Sohla explains the choices she makes for ingredients and methods.
In my brain, I'll be calling them Rainbow Right-Nows. I love that you could totally have a warm, homemade cookie in your mouth in ~25 minutes. That's wonderful and worth the effort.
I like that name.
"Why are you even making this cookie? [If you change the recipe]" Say the recipe developers everywhere. Love her forthrightness. 6:26
I don't think Sohla is against changing recipes in general. From my understanding, a lot of her book (which I haven't read yet but I've seen her interviewed about it) is largely about teaching cooking fundamentals so that you *can* change recipes to suit your needs and still have it come out good. It's just that in this particular instance, trying to use less sugar or making a "healthier" alternative would completely defeat the purpose of this sugar-fest of a cookie.
"believe and it will cookie." I adore Sohla.
I have been in desperate need of my dose of Sohla-tonin without her regular videos, so this one really hit the spot! Thank you!!
I need more Sohla on NYT Cooking. New episodes of Mystery Menu! And will there be a Sohla/Ham and Priya/Seth gingerbread house showdown????
SOHLA YAY! Love, love, love this - please invite Sohla for every cookie week!
She literally builds charchutarie houses every year with Priya . I recommend a marathon watching
yay for the first recipe with no standing mixer :D i love sohla
I’d like to see Ham and Sohla do a cookie bake off!
It’s ok Sohla my husband doesn’t understand joy or fun either when it comes to sprinkles and candy. I can’t wait to make these!
'you get that combination of vanilla and...vanilla..." Please protect this woman at any and all costs.
This is exactly what I love! You need at least two cookies in the Christmas box that aren't taking themselves too serious.
I just made these to bring on a first date to the zoo tomorrow 🩵
The only thing I changed was the mix ins. I used regular sized m&ms as well as mini choco chips and mini Reeses cups cut in half, and so I reduced the sprinkles by about half because of the extras. They ended up pretty crunchy at the 14 min mark personally, and I think I used a slightly bigger scoop, so I would start checking them about 11-ish mins if you want a softer cookie. I'm sure it depends on the oven as well, mine has a powerful fan. They are absolutely delicious and worthy of being in a bakery regardless though. I am going to tell my date that they are called "crunchy candy cookies" hehe
Well how did the date go?!
Yeah we need to know
The date was fun, but did not result in anything sadly. He kept ignoring my texts ever since and so I've moved on because I deserve someone who is willing to communicate better and want to really get to know me. He did say the cookies were good though 😅
@@humansomewhat2167 you deserve the world!!!!
@@humansomewhat2167 so glad you value yourself and your time. Save your literal and metaphorical cookies for those that deserve them.
I love any video with Sohla.
I would never make these admittedly too sweet cookies but I loved watching her make them.
I love a fancy brown butter elevated cookie, but this imitation vanilla quick cookie is so perfect for a cookie RIGHT NOW
Admit I’ve been patiently waiting for the freaking moonbeam starlight rainbow beauty cookie recipe ep and lo! It’s Sohla! The moonbeam starlight rainbow beauty herself. 🌜✨🌈💧💜
As a MEGA sugar fiend, I’m always happy to see pro chefs support the ultra sweet desserts. ❤
These remind me of when Chips Ahoy made a chocolate chip sprinkle cookie in the 90s. They were my favorite! And the commercial had the actor who played the really boring teacher from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in it!
Sohla is truly the GOAT of NYT cooking.... just let us know if you ever need to incorporate some stone-milled goodness into your life
SOHLA IS SO RIGHT ABOUT MINI M&Ms BEING BETTER. Nothing like a mouthful of mini M&Ms!!!
Never seen your videos before right now, but I am an immediate fan! I love the way you explained everything and clearly have a great attitude and sense of humor around baking! 🎉
this made me excited for the gingerbread house competition this year
When Sohla says “wow” an angel gets its wings
90's nostalgia in a bottle! ❤❤❤
Very charming! I love her joy and the happiness of the way the cookie looks.
Those cookies LOOK like a party 🎉! And thanks for the imitation vanilla tip❤. I’ll try that in other cookie recipes too.
Love everything about this; the thoughtfulness in explaining why behind her recipe testing…so much respect
I just bought Sohla’s book for both my daughter and I. I am so excited to try all the great recipes in it
you can tell she made so many versions of these to get the perfect one! Loved this and i wanna try it :)
a very exciting cookie and guaranteed satisfying treat.
I knew it! I knew this was Sohla's recipe; they look so fun!
I love these Sohla !! These are such beautiful cookies, I am going to make these for suuuure!!!
I've been waiting for this one all week!!
I really, really hope Sohla, Priya, and the gang do the gingerbread house competition this year!
Love this. Love Sohla.
"its fine, there's more cookies for me" I stan Sohla so much.
SOHLA ❤ these look crazy amazing.
I made these with my 4 year old and they are extremely popular. Lots of dumping, lots of stirring, tooth-achingly sweet, rainbow colors. Someday I may get all the sprinkles scattered throughout my kitchen.
Aww, the dog at the end ❤
THESE ARE SOOOOO GOOD! I’ve already made them 3 times. For Christmas I bought red and green sprinkles and M&Ms but these will definitely be made all year.
almond extract is one of the greatest underutilized tools in the baking kitchen!!! yessss sohla!!!!!
I watched this video about 2 hours ago. Now I have 10 out of 15 delicious cookies left to eat. 😋❤
"He doesn't understand joy" lmao!
Sohla is such a gift
These are the best cookies i ate. Very crispy on the outside and chewy in the inside. I used peanut mms and they worked perfectly.
I NEED the Sohla and Priya and husband gingerbread house please been checking every day for it
“Believe and it will cookie” is the “Trust in the force” for baking.
I made these and they were great! I used peppermint extract instead of the imitation vanilla because that’s what I had
I need to make these
How come Sohla and Ham didn’t make a gingerbread house this year?! I was hoping they would do another challenge this year
Dough for immediate cookies is the new mom/any mom dream ❤
This is Sohla in a cookie, love love it!
Yessss no standing mixer 🎉🎉🎉
“He doesn’t understand joy.” 😆🤣😆
sohla is my absolute favorite
I saw Sohla and instantly smiled.
these are the cookies that caught my eye in the nyt cooking cookie intro~
flexing the book❤ and love coz it's 1bowl and no tools. sohla🤗
Sohla is the best! What a fun video
I love super sweet treats especially when they have rainbow sprinkles lol
My type? Sohla!
Thanks for being so lovely 🙂
SOHLA IS THE BEST!!!!
I should have known that my favourite cookie in the preview shot would be sohla’s 😂 🫶🏼
I will def do them :D
Looks so yummy - and easy hahahah
Sohla is the best.
Sohla, hoping that another gingerbread house bakeoff is coming soon!
this episode has filled the hole left by not having a gingerbread showdown this year
More mystery menu please!!!
These are confetti party cookies. I think very appropriate for kids.
no she's so right, mini m&ms are supreme
The information about letting the cookies rest in the fridge making this recipe worse was so needed. It just me at home. So when i make cookies i often leave dough in the fridge to make two at a time. And i usually do this to make it taste better. But knowing this recipe wont give that desired result is cookie-saving.
"Too slow? Hahahahaha!!!!" So cute:) Is it beacause of various colors? These cookies remind me of Christmas. I'm gonna make these cookies for this Christmas❤ Even though it is still too far😅
“Believe and it will cookie.”
OK I NEED to know where Sohla's sweater top is from, I want one!
I like the idea of frozen because it will temper the sweetness, in a different way than salt. BUt I'd definitely add salt to this too!
I see Sohla, I hit play.
If I see Sohla I click. It’s just a rule
This best cookies are ones no one else likes - then you get them aaaaaaaall!
I have to count how many times she says “mix in’s” 😂
missed ginger bread houses competition this year
Yaaaaaay Sohla’s back 😍🥳
I was wondering whose cookies these were watching this series. Of course theyre Sohla's!!
Yassssss! SOHLA!!! We love Sohla!!!
That diabeetus is calling me lol. Thanks for the video
saving Sohla for last, iktr
1980's in a bottle? lol. oh my stranger things really hit the world and we're now stuck a few decades behind. lol. cookie week 1982 ducan heniz hehehe love it indeed thanks Sohla on showing us the awesome scratch made boxed cookies.
When I saw these I thought these can only be a Sohla cookie!
I have a feeling this recipe was conceptualized during Sohla’s pregnancy😆
Love Sohla! I wish I lived next door. I can see myself knocking on your door to borrow a cup of "mini m&m's" for my sugar fix! And since Ham doesn't like them, you could bring me your extra!
Gwyenth Paltrow's Aneurysm Cookie
Cookies, awesome. Sohla, awesome. Set: gorgeous. BUT WHERE’S THE ZIG ZAG CACTUS?!?!
Release new episodes of the mystery menu please.
Cold egg AND i can melt the butter? And im not suppposed to let the dough rest? Ok!!!
Sohla can do no wrong
Love how Ham doesn't understand joy
YES SOHLAAA
