Many many years ago, when I was a teenager, I was on a bus ride from Livingstone to Lusaka. I happened to be carrying my guitar with me. It was a lively bus ride, with lots of chatting people, everyone distracted. Then a man a couple of rows back asked if he could borrow my guitar. I did not know him, but I said sure and gave it to him. He started playing around with it loosely at first, and then began humming, and everyone on the bus soon fell silent. Then he began singing, and this was one of the songs. Everyone knew it. Then it dawned on us. We hadn't realized it at first, we had been so busy with our chattering nonsense, nobody had noticed who this man was when we were boarding. It was Ackim Simukonda himself. Some of us were incredulous and star-struck when we realized it. But he didn't make a big deal of it, he remained jovial and humble, kept on playing and singing. People started asking for songs, and he indulged them, interacting with everyone with great warmth. It was one of the best rides I ever took. We talked quite a bit about music, and he patiently taught me some tips and licks to improve my playing. He was a true musician's musician. A grand soul, so overflowing, so full of music, and willing and eager to share it with everyone around him. That bus ride remains one of my most cherished memories, one of those rare moments when we are transported by pure joy and beauty and humanity. And i cannot help but smile and remember it whenever I hear this song. He touched my soul that day, and those of so many others.
