Eason Chan is a legend in Cantonese music. Your song "葡萄成熟時" is one of the four-part series about men, and it talks about red wine. There's also "人車誌," which describes a man's love for cars, and is more light-hearted and cheerful. "沙龍" depicts men's love for photography, capturing every important moment in their lives. "陀飛輪" portrays men's love for watches, exchanging time for money, money for watches, only to realize that time quietly slips away, leaving them aging helplessly.
Hello Joe, I am a Hong Kong local. Let me try to storytell this song’s lyric. Eason was one of my idol when I grew up and Wyman’s lyric is one of my all-time favorite lyricists. This story is based on a guy’s POV telling his story about his ex on the day that they broke up. Wyman loves to use lots of metaphors. Using grape ripe as a metaphor of a couple getting married (as love being harvested). Using dead branches as a broken up couple. Using planting as a couple bonding to each other. Using reward in return, not comparable to the younger’s harvest as his ex’s younger sibling is getting married before her, which triggered their break up. The chorus is telling his ex not to let her tears be wasted, learn from the mistakes, let our love be your experience as the grape ripening process of wine. As for the last lines, he is telling her let their past experience ripen as wine. Let her drunk and rejuvenate herself. Everyone has been heartbroken, who hasn’t. Hope this interpretation can let you enjoy this song even more. Cheers mate.
Hi Joe, Thank you for sharing your reaction to this song. It’s such a great video to discuss canto pop. In the last 30 years, many, or one can say most, of the awarded songs in canto or mando pop were written by 林夕 (Albert Leung) and 黃偉文 (Wyman Wong). They are great lyricists and writers, so if one sees either of their names in the credits of a song, one can expect great poetic lyrics. One more thing, which you also mentioned in the last bit of your video, is that Cantonese intonation resembles the melody of the song. It’s true, as a native speaker, that lyric writing considers the combination of the pronunciation of the words and the melody of the song. So even if one does not want to sing but only speak the lyrics, it will still mimic the song. Again, I look forward to your next video.
thanks for the review. now i find this song more enjoyable even i have listened thousands of times already. there are so much details of a song. Awesome 👍
Glad that u enjoy the song. Yes, many Cantopop lyrics are so relatable, not surface level but so deep. Eason is top talent for presenting those emotion ❤, awsome particularly live on stage. Hope more foreigners could explore the beauty in Cantopop.
Been listening to this song so many times and just started to look into the details of the music and lyrics. Thank you for the narration and excellent translation in English. Well done. Please do more cantonpop :)
Eason Chan has to be the most outstanding and versatile singer from HK since the late 90s. He has so many classic Cantonese hits over the past 2 decades.
Your good analysis reminds me, as a Hong Konger, of the “grape”. Grape, sometimes in Hong Kong, would be used to describe the jealousy on something or someone. There is a famous Chinese saying, ‘the grape that I cannot eat/ the others can eat is always sour’. Which means, I feel jealous that others can eat all those grapes! So, thank you for your comprehensive interpretation that reminds me of this great (grape) puns that the song writer might wanna make when he was writing this song😍😍
Hi, Joe, I have been watched your videos for a long. There is a good Chinese Rock music I want to suggest to you. I felt it is a most special song from 90's. I will never forget how is shocked me when I first time heard it. the name is "唐朝 Tang Dynasty - 夢回唐朝". Thank you,
Hi Joe. Your videos are amazing and your insights about the chord progression and guitar solos are truly inspiring! Since you’ve mentioned how the bendy notes in the guitar solos sounds like human voice, it reminds me of a song called ‘FengZheng 風箏‘ (Kite) performed by a HK band called Supper Moment. The song lyrics is talking about relationship is just like kites. Once it lost balance and the threads broken in the sky, the love could never come back. The interesting part in the song is the guitar solo where they used two guitars and it just sounds like a couple arguing and fighting! I would like to recommend this little gem to you. ( I prefer the original Cantonese version over Mandarin version!) 🥰
Thanks for your good analysis for the song, yes Eason is one of the good singer in hk. And many hong kong songs were writen in story like that, you can try more hong kong songs. Waiting for more of your works on that!
You are watching the concert version, which probably means he had been singing for hours live, he was that good! If you like his live though, strongly suggest you to check out Eason's 浮夸 Regarding the headgear, it could be possible the song is performed after or together with the segment with the song 浮夸 which literally means `Exaggeration`. In that song he described how he (or a performer) exaggerates for the purpose to garner attention.
The lyricist of the song 《葡萄成熟时》is 黄伟文 (Wyman Wong). This song is the first part of his "Four Playthings of Men" series, which revolves around the themes of fine wine, sports cars, cameras, and luxury watches. The other three parts of this series are: * 《人车志》 ua-cam.com/video/nnylRIdagYw/v-deo.html * 《沙龙》 ua-cam.com/video/fo4zyjWTaUc/v-deo.html * 《陀飞轮》 ua-cam.com/video/_4doTqNghbE/v-deo.html
hey, joe. Please take a look Ellen Loo songs, she is a famous guitarist in Hong Kong. She was also a guitarist for Eason's concert. You will be really surprised by her guitar skills and her song are all written by herself. She is a very talented 😊im sure you will like her as well
The exaggerate headdress is like a trademark among the cantopop singers. It started in HK long ago but eventually other countries like taiwan follows it as well. It doesn't have any . meaning but just adding a wow factor with their costumes
Thank you for you love this song, actually the bendy solo is one of the feature in HK guitar performance. Please listen more Eason Chan, 彭羚, you will get more infomation on Canto-pop
If you feel curious about the perfect form of this dude, please go for the latest Eason’s ‘FEAR & DREAMs’ concert, especially ‘Homo sapiens’ & 《浮誇》, and get ready for the shock:)))
Eason Chan have lots of iconic songs, Joe can explains more Eason’s songs in your professional explanation. I am so surprise that Joe can recognise the lyrics for the grape which symbolises the girls. Since grape in Cantonese have lots of meanings. I hope Joe can take an video to analysis A-Mei (張惠妹) 《Remember》 記得❤
Cantonese songs are mostly poetic. The famous Wyman Wong is one of the best lyrics writer who even did a songs exhibition live show in Hong Kong. Just search Concert YY in youtube you will have it all signature songs written by Wyman Wong. and Wyman is moved to UK recent years.
this song is from his epic ablum 《U87》, he rocks the chinese pop music at that time. HK lyrics writers are nourished by classical chinese literature, and the composers have good knowledges on western classical music.
Please look up from the first paragraph of the lyrics, meaning he has learn from this love lesson move on and don’t let today’s tears become a waste. Become a better person. Love someone doesn’t mean that the person will love you back..
Yes, this is a masterpiece of lyric writing. The story telling of a song, the clever usage of words that have multiple meanings, the poetic values and the warning. Feel like it offers so many things in just a single song. Wyman Wong is a genius.
Thanks for the reaction to this song. Definitely one of my favourite Eason songs. Would be better though if you could look up other versions of this song. His vocals was a little off during this period of time.
I want to watch a video about the BGM at the end of Black Myth-Wukong, yungongxunyin, which you have commented on before. But this time the game company did a new arrangement, and it's great! Be sure to read my comment! PLS
Talking about Eason’s songs (of course many of his songs are good), I think you must try one of his most famous songs, which is called “浮誇“ (literal translation “Exaggeration” or “ Flamboyance”) - as the chorus is interesting, the lyric as well (but it is difficult to be translated into English exactly, cos Chinese vocab and grammar have complex and subtle meaning which have no English equivalent). But, I think you will enjoy that song. (Can hear it on UA-cam: ua-cam.com/video/fzaX9zw_2fc/v-deo.html)
Suggest listen to Eason's another song 主旋律(the main melody), i may said it's a very Cantonese style rock & roll, more tends to be a glam rock, i 100% guaranteed you will love it, very unique rock style, by the way i am the combination of Pete Doherty and Alex Turner, so you should trust me, thanks

Wyman Wong, one of the kind Canton Pop Lyricist in this era, Eason's voice is fine, but Wyman's lyrics added beautiful fireworks to the whole picture

I recommend another Eason song called "Tourbillon"(陀飛輪). You have to read the lyrics of the song.
Eason

There was just a period where Eason had outrageous costumes and this is during that period
Very accurate explanation of lyrics
The exaggerate headdress is like a trademark among the cantopop singers. It started in HK long ago but eventually other countries like taiwan follows it as well. It doesn't have any . meaning but just adding a wow factor with their costumes

Wyman has a lot of good lyrics in Canto Pop, there's an album called "Y100" contains some of his best lyrics
You have to listen to "Us" by Eason chan!!
Call me old (I'm not that old) but if you need to watch the best performance on stage, you can't miss Anita Mui. She's the real deal real legend.
This song doesn’t describe romance, it describes life. The lyrics make this song a legend.

An underrated song from Eason : 苦瓜 Bitter melon. Even more difficult to translate the lyrics accurately.
Love this song. Tough song to sing in Karaoke :)
Joe,
Without Albert Leung(林夕)there would be no no Eason Chan

Thanks for the reaction to this song. Definitely one of my favourite Eason songs.

If doing more Cantonese music, you may also look into another classic song - "Under the Vast Sky" by BEYOND.
Well said about Chinese songs. Very relatable but not surface level

Joe would you be reacting to black myth theme song 🙂
When Grape's Ripen is most likely means "when a child(girl) grown up"
so this song is saying "don't regret to fall in love with the girl you love"
As a native, the meaning of the lyrics of this song is to refer to life through love. It tells us the deeper meaning of life!❤
could you do a reaction on the Black Myth Wukong theme song - Celestial Symphony? Would love to hear your perspective XD
I want to watch a video about the BGM at the end of Black Myth-Wukong, yungongxunyin, which you have commented on before. But this time the game company did a new arrangement, and it's great! Be sure to read my comment! PLS
The lyricist now lives in London
