Uli Jon Roth , one of the greatest guitarists in history. Surely, he's been a visionary at his time, and he's the Father of the modern shredding. A great artist.
I bow with respect to the Master Uli Jon Roth .. Amazing player & his heart & soul are one with the guitar .. Seeing him in Toronto Jan 29th Live .. .. keep on Rocking SwB... cheers
A Friend of mine, David Van Landing, has sung for Michael Schenker. And has worked with Uli, several times. Says Uli Jon Roth, is one of the most genuine people in the music business. There's a great video on Utube, Of David Van Landing, singing on a G3 tour, with Michael Schenker, Joe Satriani, Brian May, and Uli Jon Roth. Performing at Wembley, Stadium, in the 90's. Great video.
Great comment SurfSwift. Uli has no ego, he just loves to play. I met him in Detroit in 2004 and he truly has no ego, just loves to play and when people want to listen he loves it even more. He smiles so much when he plays too, a genuine smile too.
I saw him live here in Albania last year, I was in the front row and I was just standing there and listening and admiring him. He improvized for like half an hour, because the other guitarist was having some problems, he just blew everybody's mind.
Uli Jon Roth! I was just wondering what he was upto these days. Good to hear he's still gong strong. To my ears, he was a pioneer of the neo-classical metal genre. He paved the way for a lot of people; but still held that Hendrixian vibe. His most important quality was his concern for artistic quality. He is quite sincere about making music that actually means something. He was never content being a mere entertainer.
I was born in '82 and this is still a great song. I can only imagine being about 20 when this came out -- it would have been just about the coolest song and style of playing I had ever heard as it was way ahead of its time.
all hail uli! thanks for posting this absolute f'ing classic. can remember hearing it for the first time in about 84 and having so much sympathy for poor rudy schenker
Did he play like that in the Scorpions? I can't imagine the Scorpions being that good but I've never listened to them. But man that was awesome. Now I understand how he influenced Malsmsteen. Much respect!
Yngwies vibrato before Yngwie, Beckers arpeggios before Becker, neoclassical playing before neoclassical, SRVs feeling that SRV would envy, true shredder before shredding.A Master. Everyone who plays modern electric guitar should repsect this ultra-underrated guitarist and father of beautiful guitar playing. Respect.
WOW!!! You are right, that's all three of them! Crap, I remember seeing them way way back in Stuttgart Germany what seems like a lifetime ago. Rosenthal and Roth are two of the best musicians I know.
After forgetting about early Scorpions (pre Matias Jabs) for some time I've recently found a bunch of their stuff on UA-cam and by association rediscovered Uli as well. Damn, he's good and nice to see him still playing with a lot of fire some thirty years later. Great stuff. Thanks Ulisky for posting.
I love Uli Roth. He's humble and he doesn't do any macho posturing. You just plays and he's the best at it. I love Japanese guitar magazines because they always give him love.
This was a one of the greatest concerts experiences I had next to seeing Buddy Guy live. Seeing Francis Bucholz on stage again was a joy. Uli was very funny between songs and If I remember correctly. Graham Bonnet, Joe Stump, Don Dokken,Warren DeMartini, David Paich from Toto, Chris Poland from Megadeath, Robby Krieger from the Doors. I have a whole new respect for Robby, there was a bass player that sang some Cream songs that was really good. If Uli Jon Roth comes to your town you should go.
I was at this show. Great! Uli Jon Roth is truly a talented guy and throws out a very positive vibe. Of course, this will never be commercially successful but i dont think he cares. 5 hours plus of concert and I the only time I got at all bored was when the doors guy played the same riff for 20 minutes.
This song was an old Scorpions song from the '70s album called Taken By Force. Uli Jon Roth was the guitarist for that album, Virgin Killer, and In Trance, the Scorpions greatest albums in my personal opinion. But yes, the short answer is Malmsteen covered Uli.
Amazing. When he's playing that fast lick at 45 seconds it looks as though his fingers are barely touching the fretboard. Very little gain and yet the notes are so clear.
awesome i saw him a few years ago at jaxx ib springfield va.awesome show palyed some old hell cat and old scorps tunes solo at 3.58 is glass cracking!! at least!!
Great to also see FRANCIS BUCHOLZ playing with uli again!they were both in a band called april dawn in the early 70's before they both joined the scorpions!!
all hail to uli... the most underrated guitarist of all. he is absolute magic on the fretboard. this shit makes me sad though because i see what the world of rock and roll is headed to...one chord wonders...sighhh
Scorpions "Tokyo Tapes" (1977?) was my introduction to Uli Roth. He was years ahead of anyone I can think of at that time...probably one of the 5 most influential players in the history of electric guitar, IMHO.
uli jon roth, when you think about how old this guy is, is pretty remarkable... imagine urself back in the mid 70's before 'shred' was even invented, and you see this guy's fingers soar up and down the scales like he was possessed! it'd be a total mind blow.
@Prestostark I got into the scrops back in the 70's as well so you're not alone. This includes the 74 release of "Fly to the Rainbow. one of fave's, for classis Scorps'.. So i am aicent too. LOL!
he s a master and more than this he s a real gentleman__________i think with michael shenker and uli scorpions have touched some of the greatest guitarists in the history of rock....
... and ran with it. Uli left the Scorpions at a time when they were just getting ready to break through in a big way. He felt they were being commercial metal and he wanted to go more of a classical sense. He even took a couple years off in the late 80's to study classical piano. If you like this u should get the double live lp, Tokyo Tapes. It's the Scorpions live in 1978 and Uli and the band sound amazing. I'm not a Scorpions fan but that lp is one of those lp's I would take on a island
@Carlosmr1984 Thank you for replying I will definitely have to check out the Scorpions catalog when Uli was with them. I can't believe how the guitar magazines that I bought never referred to this guy - ever!
There's no reason to say who's better or this and that but I will say that Uli is an innovator that doesn't get the big name attention that he deserves.
Every Guitar Player Aspires to be Uli...even if they never heard of him. There are close parallels. Different cultures. But we are talking Germany to USA and the rest of the world. He has done it..he created it..yes , an Ego, I guess. Love his work anyway. We also all wiil one day get old and die. I'm not putting him in the grave.. JL
holy crap! when me and my friend first saw a picture of this guy in a guitar magazine were instantly said "who is that hippy!, he probably sucks at guitar!" of course we were in grade 8 then....and now that i'm hearing him play he is actually quite talented and a lot of great guitarists site him as an influence. Great guitarist.
Uli just kills! His ability is ridiculous and his touch is amazing. My fave is Drifting Sun from Fly To The Rainbow, in my opinion the heaviest lead and metal song of all time! I love ULI!!!
Agreed, saw him live 2 months ago, his tone was amazing. During his seminar in the morning he used a vintage Marshall that sounded fantastic, but he fried it before the gig, so he used a Framus Dragon and a Marshall Vintage Modern later. The new Marshall was picking up radio during the gig, so he had to turn it off, but he was still in top form!

I listened to this old Scorpions stuff long before Yngwie hit the scene in Steeler, before Randy Rhodes was in Ozzys band. You young whippersnappers have to remember Uli was doing this stuff back in the 1970's, not the 1980's when neo classical stuff got popular. By the time all the Shrapnel guys got popular in the mid-late 80's, Uli took a hiatus and reinvented himself with his Sky guitar. Remember, the reason Varney started Shrapnel was to find the next Roth or Schenker...
HOLY FREAKIN GOD im a big fan of the scorpions but never seen a vid of this guy live. he is awesome and real laid back. never though that he seriously had a guitar with like 32 frets or wateva great stuff
Uli Jon Roth , one of the greatest guitarists in history.
Surely, he's been a visionary at his time, and he's the Father of the modern shredding.
A great artist.
***** thanks dude!
Uli's tone during the opening is crazy. It sounds like a cello.
I bow with respect to the Master Uli Jon Roth .. Amazing player & his heart & soul are one with the guitar .. Seeing him in Toronto Jan 29th Live .. .. keep on Rocking SwB... cheers

Fred and Patty Chandler Would LOVE to have been at that concert! You named some of my most favorite players on Earth. So tasteful!
The first neo classical guitarist, before Yngwie
Shouldn't that technically be Ritchie Blackmore
Jan Akkerman gets close with Hocus Pocus
That's a Fact for all those that don't know
Even with the audio not being that great on this video, it's still very clearly showing how incredible Uli is. He's an absolutely amazing guitarist!
Great comment SurfSwift. Uli has no ego, he just loves to play. I met him in Detroit in 2004 and he truly has no ego, just loves to play and when people want to listen he loves it even more. He smiles so much when he plays too, a genuine smile too.
It's crazy how he plays that solo completely effortlessly I've seen him play it live and I was just mesmerized by his playing the entire time
Effortless. Perfect tone. Amazing stage presence.
This man is a true Musical (not just guitar) God.
I saw him live here in Albania last year, I was in the front row and I was just standing there and listening and admiring him. He improvized for like half an hour, because the other guitarist was having some problems, he just blew everybody's mind.
He's a legend! Still playing like a demon and this is an awesome piece of music, as was the original all those years ago.
Uli Jon Roth! I was just wondering what he was upto these days. Good to hear he's still gong strong.
To my ears, he was a pioneer of the neo-classical metal genre. He paved the way for a lot of people; but still held that Hendrixian vibe.

Uli is such an underrated writer/player. Sails of charon is totally awesome and talk about class playing, that is mustard indeed. cheers for posting.
I was born in '82 and this is still a great song. I can only imagine being about 20 when this came out -- it would have been just about the coolest song and style of playing I had ever heard as it was way ahead of its time.
I love how he does that solo flawlessly without even looking!
all hail uli! thanks for posting this absolute f'ing classic. can remember hearing it for the first time in about 84 and having so much sympathy for poor rudy schenker

Classic!!! takes me back....Uli is a brilliant musician.
Everytime Uli smiles, i get the distinct feeling its the smile of a man who knows all the secrets of the universe. He's not a human.
Excellent video and performance. I especially loved the lead break with the synthesized violin. It worked.
WOW!!! You are right, that's all three of them! Crap, I remember seeing them way way back in Stuttgart Germany what seems like a lifetime ago. Rosenthal and Roth are two of the best musicians I know.
Uli bro! Just when I fell in love with the Scorpions, he quit................like after Tokyo Tapes.
One of the Scorpions was taught by family friends of mine in Hanover ... might have been Uli, always wanted to meet him! this is awesome
One of the greatest rock guitarists of all time. His vibrato, use of the tremolo bar, and his feel generally are simply perfect.
This world is a better place because of this man.
simply one of the greatest songs ever written.
Nobody will ever play this song like Uli Jon Roth
That was an awesome live performance! I really enjoyed listening to the nice new additions he's added since the original.
That opening guitar lick is really hard to beat. One of the best ever.
When someone plays that accurate effortlessly, there is nothing else to say but praises
such a great guitarist. he looks so chilled when he plays this song
I love Uli Roth. He's humble and he doesn't do any macho posturing. You just plays and he's the best at it. I love Japanese guitar magazines because they always give him love.
ah Uli John Roth you are the original Guitar Hero!!!! every1 wanted to sound like you!! legend
That opening solo always makes me shed a lil tear no matter how many times i hear it!
This was a one of the greatest concerts experiences I had next to seeing Buddy Guy live. Seeing Francis Bucholz on stage again was a joy. Uli was very funny between songs and If I remember correctly. yngwie is just a fan of uli!!! uli influences a lot of great guitarists today... uli is a true living legend, a true icon, a real guitar hero!
Great playing, sound, song (with a few silly moments). Somehow I knew this guy's name but not his playing. Glad I checked him out.
holy crap uli is amazing!! that was just so flawlessly and beautifully played man
You lucky crowd got to witness greatness. Uli is such a perfectionist. His live playing is second to none.
This song was an old Scorpions song from the '70s album called Taken By Force. Uli Jon Roth was the guitarist for that album, Virgin Killer, and In Trance, the Scorpions greatest albums in my personal opinion. But yes, the short answer is Malmsteen covered Uli.

OMG His Vibrato is Impeccable and His playing too!!! Makes it look easy.. All Hail!!
Amazing. When he's playing that fast lick at 45 seconds it looks as though his fingers are barely touching the fretboard. Very little gain and yet the notes are so clear.
The greatest guitar solo ever played or composed period
He is so RELAXED while blazing away! The great ones make it LOOK so easy (ha-ha)!!
On my way too go see you in Huntington beach Cali!!

No one can play a cover of this, many have tried but uli is the only one who holds mastery over it.
There's no reason to say who's better or this and that but I will say that Uli is an innovator that doesn't get the big name attention that he deserves.
