- CTU Professor Dr. C. Vanessa White interviews Dr. Shannen Dee Williams on the hidden history of Black Catholic Sisters, and their fight to dismantle racial and gender barriers in the US Church and in wider US society. Dr. Williams is working on a book titled “Subversive Habits: Black Nuns and the Long Struggle to Desegregate Catholic America.” This conversation was recorded in CTU's studio on March 1, 2016.
I heard her speak in Memphis. So glad she is telling the story. One of my dearest friends is a black Catholic Sister.
Good video! Thank you CTU
Thank you Dr.
When I read the life of a white US saint, her maid who was discerning her vocation was delegated to "coloured vocations".
I just learned about this historian and as an American Hispanic Catholic, I am very interested in this history that I know nothing about.
Any update on this? How is the push going to keep the religious state going in black sisters? The catholic community is strong in the Latin community. This means a lot to me my kids are Haitian & Puerto Rican.
Any chance of citing sources? I want to get some detail on this.
Sir this discrimination is still occurring in many convents. Don't be surprised. Unfortunately, the convents reflect the general racism that exists in our country.
