You're so smart! I never thought to freeze before slicing. I just hate squishing my bread trying to slice. Going to try your recipe and get three done for the freezer so I can have for company :)
My child won't eat the crust ... I freeze the crust then dehydrate a bulk amount and turn it into powder in my blender and I make a new loaf of bread out of yeast and half all purpose half bread crust powder .. it's amazing ! Mom hack lol
I have a meat slicer and it does a great job on bread as well as veggies. Just watch your fingers and use the Safety guard The same way you would use it for meats. You can adjust it to be as thin or thick as you want.
I was going to suggest that you have Mark make up a wooden jig for slicing but you seem to be doing all right. I've always been told to partially freeze meats etc when slicing. The bread not only looks good but also the slicing!!
Toni, I do the same with my bread. Slice and freeze. But, I package my slices by the twos in little zip lock bags and put them in a plastic bread box made by the “Green Bag” company and stick it in the freezer. I have had this bread box for years but probably any brand would work. That way, I can take out enough for myself for a fresh sandwich or toast and don’t have to unwrap the whole loaf to get a few pieces. If you don’t want to use sandwich zip locks you can wrap the slices in plastic wrap (by the twos, or whatever) and then put them in the bread box. So much easier to utilize quickly.
Great idea freezing & slicing only what you need! Bread from freezer (not the fridge) is as good as fresh. I have to tell you tho..I gave my hubby a small goofy nic nac for his desk years back that says " I didn`t say it was your fault..I said I was going to blame you!" I have made more homemade bread, rolls, & hamburger buns in the last few weeks since I tried your soft bread recipe than I have in many years! So..if I start gaining weight..I will look at that nic nack & think of you! LOL Hope your cold gets better soon..sounds like you`re having a hard time breathing. Maybe a steam tent will help. Take care of yourself!
Your bread looks soooo good! I can almost taste it from here. Thanks for showing us how you slice yours. I've always made a mess of it! Never thought to freeze it first. Have a great weekend! God bless you & Mark. 🙏🙏
@@cookinmonster thanks. In the end I got a masters in advanced bread slicing from Loaf University which took less time than watching this video would have.
Your bread is just beautiful! We bought a meat slicer a few years ago with an optional bread slicing wheel. It does ok on bread but I am going to use your freeze-first method! Amazon has bread bags, IDK if they're available in your area? So sorry about your cold; not feeling 100% is draining especially when a to-do list is too tiring to even think about. At least that's how it affects me. Get better soon!
@@HerHomesteadSkills So sorry if that seemed a rude, ignorant question! We use the bread bags (they come on a big roll) for so many other things as well since they're so much cheaper than gallon zip-type storage bags.
@@HerHomesteadSkills thank you for your quick response. Will adjust my time! I just searched for your recipe and I’m going to make two more loaves tomorrow using that. 🤗
This year I am planting by the moon phases. Its very interesting how the moon affects the plants.i got this dam cold to .I had sweet potatoes from slips I grew from the sweet potatoes from the store I grew them her in Saskatchewan. I got lots but they were small like carrots, because summer wasn't long enough. But they were good. Good idea about the bread I never thought of that ,thanks for sharing.
Freezing hand-shaped, crusty bread without a form is a bit trickier because the crumb is still soft/pliant but the crust has a hard crisp. Boules are particularly difficult due to being round
I've been looking at the bread slicing guides trying to decide if they would help me or not. My slices are laughingly wonky! I'll try your freezing tip first. I may have to use both, the freezing AND the guide because my slices really are terrible. 😳😆
I wonder if the man who didn't get any sweet potatoes planted just slips or if he planted sprouted tubers. 🤔 what new sweet potato growers sometimes do is plant sprouted tubers (like we do regular potatoes) if so that won't work. Sweet potatoes are a total different species of plant. They are a type of morning glory. I read years ago that a slip would grow 3-4 tubers but a single tuber planted would only grow vines and not make additional tubers. I seem to remember its something like the plant is triggered to make tubers if there is only roots but if there is already one it doesn't trigger the making process therefore doesn't make additional tubers.
That could be, however there does seem to be some doubt as to the length of the growing season here...but I'm trying anyway...even if I only get small ones!
@@HerHomesteadSkills its always worth a try. My mother grew watermelons back in mountains when everyone told her it was impossible. Summers temperature weren't hot enough for long enough. It took her about 4 summers to get her first one but every year she said she learned a little more as she tried different things.
@@HerHomesteadSkills odd. Any time I put (store bought sliced) bread in the refrigerator or freezer it is only good for toasting or grilling. But when I bake bread and put it in a plastic bag (whole loaf) stored on the counter it remains nice and fresh and soft for a week!
@@HerHomesteadSkillsyes. frost free fridge freezers do have a tendency to dry everything out. What caught my ear was your comment about putting bread in the freezer and 'always having fresh bread'. I guess we have different ideas what fresh bread is.

Thank you for that brilliant tip of freezing the bread before slicing. It makes so much sense! I don't know why I never thought of it myself!

I put mine in the freezer. When I have a decent amount, I cube it and make French toast casserole with it.
I save crusts, heel ends, etc & when I have enough I make homemade stuffing/dressing for turkey or chicken.
I use it for stuffing, which also includes leftover items like banana bread, cinnamon buns, whole wheat, and whatever else is frozen
what a great idea for a video. so many people just learning the basics and those are not always easy to find. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!

Beautiful bread and great idea to freeze a bit first. I hope your cold is gone soon.

Beautiful slices
Thank You! practice!!!!
Thanks for this demonstration and tip. I always struggled slicing my bread. This definitely helps! 👍
Always learning from you, thanks. Feel better soon
I use an electric knife for slicing bread- it's the only thing I use it for. I make a large Pullman loaf, slice it and put half in the freezer.
Beautiful bread!!!

Well I thought of doing it as well and here you are already doing it. My question do I freeze it overnight before slicing or just few hours
I would freeze for "hours" as you just want it firmed up enough to slice cleanly.
Great demonstration Toni. TFS 👍
How long should you freeze it? I baked two loaves today and this video was super helpful. I set a timer for an hr. Too long?
Likely not long enough, but test it...when it is "firm" not frozen is should be much easier to slice.

Beautiful bread and wow at the tips❤❤❤❤❤
I freeze mine before I cut, but never thought to lay it on its side.
Staleness of bread is related to crystallization of starch, which is accelerated in a refridgerator
Those slices are money in the bank
tasty too!

Great job Toni much better than I do.
As soon as my bread cools I slice it all with electric knife it seems to the trick if one only slice a few each time I find it crumbles the bread.
You can also put a tablespoon of vinegar in your bread, and it will stay nice soft and fresh.
I try to slice my bread but, it always goes wonky. Never thought about freezing it first, maybe I will give that a try. Lol

It's never frosty or dried out, I wrap it very well! but it would be stale in a day if I left it out.

That might have something to to with the amount of humidity in your air.
