As someone who suffers from depression No Exit is a great example of one of the many things that you feel when you're depressed. Looking for love and approval. You're trapped in a Hell of your own creation because you don't love yourself.
I absolutely adore your videos! The results on my exam were greatly affected by your amazing teaching. You really are an amazing, humerous teacher, so please do keep these videos coming! :)
Our professor walked out of class earlier because we were not informed that we will be discussing No Exit by Sartre. None of us could tell the story . This is a wonderful video that i will be sharing in our Philosophy class on Tuesday. Thank you Tom! Cheers!
now that I look back on it, a lot of the philosophers wrote books about their philosophy as stories, once you mentioned him writing his philosophy as a play. it made so much more sense, looking directly at "thus spake zarathustra"
Wild to see these giants' depictions of Hell. Sartre with a small room filled with 2 people who judge you, and Dante with 9 huge circles full of fantasy.
Excellent explanation. Look vs Subjectivity; both are needed yet so painfully contradicting or repulsing each other. Part of human condition though. Sartre was genius.
However meanings do change over time and I do concur with his orginal meaning as well as the one which most people believe is true and that hell is actually other people!
Does 'Hell is other people' mean that 'The Look' of the Other is a threat to our freedom because it influence our behaviour? But then Sartre's Freedom claimed that we always have choice? I am confused, can someone please help, thank you
# TBC it does mean that „the look of others“ influences and condemns us and our behavior, to his freedom: you do have a choice like in example : you can either eat chocolate or not, you have options you can or like Sartre said you „must“ choose, even the choice not to choose is a choice and if you say „I had to do that“ or „I didn’t had another option“ it’s self-delusion according to Sartre because you always have another options to choose from.
the human condition that dictates 'Hell is other people' is one that EVERYONE feels (due to the feelings of objectification/how we perceive people treating us) But this quote refers to the inability for people to understand Hell can come from us too. That the human condition teaches us that 'Hell' is from out there, instead of understanding that we, as a society, can have the total freedom to not create Hell for people.
Very informative and elaborate lecture as always, Mr. Richey. Would it be possible for you to make more videos on Western philosophy in the near future, which IMO is at the very least as interesting and fascinating as your main topic of discussion on this channel (world history)? :)
So, people are like quantum particles. Their nature depends on the observer. I look at one person and see a doctor. Another person sees a flirt, another a mommy, etc. And the observation changes the observed. If I am perceived by everyone to be uncouth, eventually I must conclude that I AM uncouth. We are all Chauncey Gardners just being there until somebody sees us. Is that it?
You get to choose your own conclusions about yourself. You don’t HAVE to agree with what other people are concluding about you - but other people certainly don’t make it any easier!
The problem is that every person is a subject. You, yourself are a subject and people surrounding you are object-subjects, both at once in relation to you. This is why it is necessary to treat others with dignity, i.e., recognize yourself as an object-subject in relation to other people.
Perfect for this New World Order paradigm...it is convoluted and a disfunctional view of the human condition. We are Beloved to God and one of his creations...Giving thanks that I walk in the Light of Jah's glory....I walk with I and I by my side...He is my Shield and my Staff!!! Goodness and Mercy and loving kindness will win in the end. Have faith, be brave...plan for the worst and hope for the best!
This is one of those ones 'some people' (read:me) should watch every day just as their brains are kicking in to prevent them from a lifetime of running in someone else's race... Hell is no perspective.
your interpretation is not that of the French professor in whose class we read it. He said it is about a group of people in a jail cell with their eyelids cut off and a light on. Their personalities grated each other and the only reprieve was when the jailer brought the food. This is surely hell
The plot of the book he showed: Three damned souls, Joseph Garcin, Inèz Serrano, and Estelle Rigault, are brought to the same room in Hell and locked inside by a mysterious valet. They had all expected torture devices to punish them for eternity, but instead, find a plain room furnished in the style of the French 'Second Empire'. At first, none of them will admit the reason for their damnation: Garcin says that he was executed for being an outspoken pacifist, while Estelle insists that a mistake has been made; Inèz, however, is the only one to demand that they all stop lying to themselves and confess to their moral crimes. She refuses to believe that they have all ended up in the room by accident and soon realizes that they have been placed together to make each other miserable. She deduces that they are to be one another's torturers.
+TheManInRoomFive Yes, but that person has the freedom to self-define. According to existentialist philosophy, what makes the man an intruder? What more is that than a label objectifying the man?
It was a response to the sentence "the object only exist in the relation to the subject". I understood that as the object meaning the physical entity, not object in the grammatical sense. But isn't 'person' or 'man' also labels? Every word can be deconstructed, but I am not sure that it is always that helpful. But never mind, this is getting off topic.
Henry the Innocent VIII It’s a contradiction. How can everything be subjective? That’s an objective statement. So everything cannot be subjective as if it were that would be objective, ie a contradiction.
@@antpoo What if the statement that everything is subjective is a subjective statement that is meant to talk about a human limitation rather than external reality?
@@antpoo No, I'm not making an objective statement. I'm making an analytical statement which can only exist dependent of subjective minds. Sure, an objective reality exists, but any statements about it are necessarily subjective. This is not a statement about reality itself, but a statement about individuals making statements about reality. I infer from the existence of beings capable only of observing the world from their perspective that they are unable to make objective statements. This is itself a subjective statement based on my observations.
Camus can do but Sartre is Smartra. No but really if there really is no afterlife then Camus and Sartre are potentially two of the most intelligent beings whoever lived
But what is 'the self' but the sum of all influence? Surely your principles, and your concept/ opinion of yourself is nothing but the product of your surroundings and other people. How does Sartre draw such a line? Hell may well be other people but the context of other people is the only thing that makes YOU you.
He refers to 'the self' as a way to identify a being that see's Hell in other people - but Sartre makes the point that this same 'self' has the ability to create hell for other people. He's pointing out that we create hell for people through rules, whereas we can choose to be totally free.
It takes an absurd literature to reflect on an absurd reality. It was truly a wasting of time to read it, thankfully it was not too long. Another book to the trash bin, after Nietzsche’s.

I didn't know Matt Damon has a youtube channel
you're facking Matt Damon?
You fuckin’ blind?
Its actually Theo Vonn’s Matt Damon impression
i know it is kinda off topic but do anybody know of a good place to watch newly released movies online ?
@Mustafa Jasper flixportal :)
This mans voice is so powerful yet soothing at the same time
It must be very stressful to still care about what other people think. They only have as much power as you give them

+MrSuad123 Thanks for the kind words. Will do!
Seven years later, I am glad you did well on the exams.
Mr. Richey was my professor years ago at TCTC. He was an amazing teacher. I happened to stumble upon his channel. I’m definitely subscribing.
"Jean Paul Sartre said 'Hell is being locked forever in a room with your friends.'"
"Yeah, but all his mates were French!"

Harambe died without caring about others approval.... Sartre would have been proud
+Cody Fenimore RIP! Always good to see you here, my dear friend!
Dicks out for Sartre!
I'm still watching after my Euro exam #truefan
I had a totally different interpretation in mind after seeing the quote in COTE. This inspired me. Thanks.
Classroom of the Elite anyone?
Thank you for helping me feel confident about my AP exam! The AP Euro series helped a lot 😊
Tom Richey, you have one heckuva speaking voice. It's great you're using it to teach.

Geez, you explained it perfectly!
Imagine the protagonist in the recent day, how many followers would he have?
You're only cool if other say you are.
How else would you know.

So I guest this quote is not about being anti social or introvert . . .its all about freedom and subjectivity
Is there such thing as being too subjective
I was confused all the way until the last 30 seconds. Then it made sense.
Thank you so much for all the great videos! I feel confident that I got at least a 4 on Euro
