Viv Albertine - The British Masters Season 2 - Chapter 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 чер 2015
- Esteemed rock critic John Doran meets Viv Albertine in the second part of Noisey's The British Masters, a series where John interviews the most influential and colourful figures from British popular music history.
Viv Albertine is unique in several ways. As one of the founding members of The Slits, Viv Albertine ruptured rock music's linear progression, effecting a genuine and shocking break with what had come before. The Slits combined dub-reggae, free jazz, early hip-hop, funk and punk into a unique new sound. Viv Albertine has recently delivered a shocking and brilliantly-written autobiography called Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys.

the Slits to me as a 15 year old were bizarre, amazing like nothing i'd heard before absolutely loved them ,40 years later i've just read Viv's book ...I'm in love again
I've read a lot of books about music over the years, but musicians' memoirs rarely hold my attention for more than a few pages, if that. Viv's book is the only exception I can think of. I read the whole thing and it was definitely worth it. I thought it might get boring after the Slits broke up and there was still a large chunk of the book to go, but it stayed interesting. I think the key is Viv's unusual honesty and openness.
Hooray for Viv! - I hope she lives long and prospers - while stirring things up as much as she can. Her book was GREAT - so "matter of fact," and so fearless.
Trekkie detected
I was so stoked to see this in my feed. I loved Season 1. John is the best interviewer I've seen in years. Total pro.
Yes I think he is great. I have watched most of the Masters series now. All excellent interviews 😊
he's like a contorted assimilation
'Deconstruction of a Legend 'LOL! LOVE Viv's jaw-dropping and incredible autobiography . She's always great in interviews. Relate to a lot of what's in her book, and what she talks about. Except kids, never wanted them!
So far, I've given 4 copies of "Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys." as gifts to close friends, and everyone has enjoyed it, including myself.
I read the book in three days it was awesome I couldn't put down. The downside of me being born in the 80's is the fact I missed the punk movement.
it didn't last that long at all, it died as soon as the british media started telling everyone how to dress, how to have their hair, etc. the whole point of it was to be yourself and do what you want to do
I enjoy hearing Viv Albertine speak. I don't agree with everything but that's fine. She has some great insights on creativity and you learn a lot about how things were in Britain in the past.
The Slits absolutely changed everything for me as a 15 year old girl. And beyond . They did not conform. They twisted all norms beyond identity .
*They actually DID conform to using conventional instruments and playing within established genres (in their own interpretation, of course)*
@@sexobscura are you male ?
@animalswin2105
In all honesty I'm a prophet of the fourth gender
What a great interview, loving this season.
Best interview with Viv yet. GET the book, all the talk is true.
I wanted this to be longer. I better get her book.
excellent interview , . R - e - a- d the book, its so honest and inspiring. Thank you Viv Albertine.
Agreed. Viv's book is fantastic - literally could not put it down.
i could listen to her speak forever. and great job john as per usual- those are Questions.
More books please Viv. Please
very insightful lady. i loved her book and i love her music also. quality artist.
This book, for me, reading it was the first time i understood what punk was.
brilliant interview
Love her. Got to get my hands on her book.
I could listen to Viv all day long. She talks such a lot of sense. A True Punk!
Beautiful voice and a beautiful human being.
Awesome!! Many thanks.
Can't help but adore her, always.
Ari up is a brony confirmed. But seriously Viv Albertine and the rest of the slits (also poly styrene because she is my favorite) are inspirational.
Poly Styrene's book written by her daughters is out now/son I'm sure!
Excellent.
Brilliant interview ....
She's in her early 60s here but looks 20 year younger
she speaks like an opinionated freshman.
@@anaranjadisimo where are your interviews, I wanna compare
@@anaranjadisimo what do you do in life?Any talent ? Anyone inspired by you ? Don't think so.
She’s timeless youth
so inspiring!
Legend!
what a class act Viv is !
She is so incredibly extraordinary. There are some really valid points here about how the younger female generation perceive music culture. I wonder what there is to rebel against now?
The next interview must be about ready to drop...?
The Slits had a transcendant sound bigger than punk.
Damn this was crazy from the very beginning
It is a very, very good autobiography.
PJ Harvey must be heard
I used to be a Big fan of PJH but she bas diluteted away into bland intellectual stuff. Really disappointed.
A real Punk icon.
"I couldnt wait to see fanny" took the words right out of my mouth Viv 😛
Speaking of This Heat, please please please pull Charles Hayward for a series like this. Add Mark Stewart to the mix alongside Genesis P Orridge and we've got season 3 all panned out.
Maybe fuck it all up with David Tibet somewhere in the mix, just for contrast.
I so wanted to give her one, when I was 12. Glad she's ok!
I feel Viv is exaggerating a bit when she claims there were no women she could claim as role models - before punk. What about women like, Annette Peacock, Nina Simone, Yoko Ono and Patti Smith?
If you read Viv's book you would find that she name checks Patti & Yoko as heroes etc. Check your facts before you spout bullshit. tosser
I agree, she was exaggerating, but surely intentionally to make her point.
(And come on, Peter Evans- what's your problem? The person is referring to her words in this interview.)
@@peterevans6102 Yoko Ono was and remains a wanton fucking waste of proteins and amino acids tbh.
As for Patti Smith, people were just too scared of her to point out that the hippy era was over and that Bob Dylan already existed. She was about as punk as Don McLean knocking out a bluegrass rendition of I've got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts on a steel guitar with a flying burrito up his arse.
@@nobbynoris 💯'% correct on Yoko Ono
Viv is like the laid back version of John Lydon. Honest, pure, in the day each day. Just to get out and do something that's never been done before, and be totally unapologetic about it. Yet to do it with some integrity that backs it up, or surpasses the titillation of the moment. And to be so unpretentious about it all at the end of the day. She'll forever be the coolest punk chick IMHO. :)
Shes nothing like Lydon, a bully and a narcissist.
Takes one to know one.
A real artist.
a beautiful intelligent woman. sit down and listen
I'm glad the presenter had a bath and a shave
If it was from the rose beds I wouldn't be so sure it was mud lol
i would love an interview with Brian May, Jimmy Page or Mick Jagger!
WOT...altogether?
maybe they should form a superTrio
Doran the Jackal. Here he's doing his Internationale Raconteur stylish gent. CIA foiled again!
the slits rule!!
Viv is very cool. Something about her. I really resonate with her. Yes, I am. Lol
I wished I could have talked to you just for an hour or so in Nambucca, but you were intent on Roland Gift. Maybe a little bit contemptuous of fans, but there you go, that's what fame does I suppose...
Wow that grey filter really does make everything look so much more edgy and real...
♥ ♪♪
There absolutely is still a counter-culture around still ..its just mainstream journos dont write about it .Good.
No I don't think there is. I think the lack of 'youth tribes' has led to a homogenised load of cack.
So they resented women's bodies being used to sell things, but used a topless picture as a record cover. Ok then.
Eddie Droze. Self Destruction. Listen.
Been with my wife for 20 years & she still won't pee in front of me.
ahahahah...
why not?
Guess water sports is out of the question then lol
6:36 why britishs have such bad teeths????
We love our heroin, us Brits.
Ain't got plastic American teeth
Because us Brits dig heroin so much, OK?
Crooked teeth don't equal "bad" or unhealthy teeth, FFS. Not everyone in the world is obsessed with those fucking big, weird, blinding, American teeth.
More mistresses and less masters .
viv should articulate just what it is she wants different from capitalism
Maybe in order to please you she should stay at home, cook and shut up? What have you done with your life?
11:50 I didn't know a person could give up life just because it couldn't have a baby.
Yes what a feminist...
she looks like shes 30
she's posh
Communism always starts with feminism, soo naive.
wrong on so much. just cuz you don't see it doesn't mean it isn't happening. she is just out of touch.
The fucking who ?
Who? literally?
