    Do you think in the future they will "blend" both apps? I love the way Google Photos search works and unlimited storage is just perfect, however I also prefer folder system of Google Drive, it's far more intuitive and we are all used to it because of Windows. Albums sort of work but it's still a bit messy. I have loads of photos and I'm having a hard time organizing it all, plus Google Photos loves to order it by date and some dates are just wrong/non existent...

    So if the google photos app saves your photos, and you also have the google drive app on your phone to automatically backup google photos, does this count against your storage quota? My understanding that the photos from my iphone are saved to google photos, but will also be backed up to google drive?

    Question: I have Samsung (Android) phone with Google Photo App. I sync full-size Original photos to Google Photos using Google Photo App. I do not want to loose any resolution.
    I delete photos from my Android phone on regular basis. I connect my phone with my Mac using USB with "Android File Transfer" app. On my Mac computer, I access the folders and delete all photos. Will these delete photos from photos.google.com also?
    I am missing full photo albums by day and I'm afraid that deleting from the phone is causing the issue. I can find these photos in the Trash folder of my Google Drive.

    Thank you. This is the exact thing I was trying to figure out. After you clarified the differences for me, I realize I should have used Google Photos instead of Google Drive. I am not finding the Google Photo features are available for all the pix I have stored in Google Drive. You touched on how they work together briefly, but really, I want to transfer them over so I can decrease the amount of space I am using in Drive. I did turn on the setting so that I can see Google Photos in Google Drive.... it's the functionality that I am missing. A tutorial on this would be great!

    I've always used Google as my go-to for everything, and this is the first time I've researched google photos vs. drive for uploading and storage capabilities. With the amount of pictures and videos I create, I find it very easy to run out of the "Free Space". I'm going to future research the benefits of Google Photos, as this is looking like the way to go.
    i look forward to reviewing more of your videos!

    HELP.. I need your help!!! I went into google drive settings and selected to automatically put google photos into a folder in my drive as you showed in the video.
    Unfortunately....my photos do not subcategorize into folders by years or months. How do I do that? Please show a video on this. Mine just show up as pictures and are as tedious to look through as in google photos. I don't know how to upload pictures of what I see but if you need that let me know how to do that too. Thanks

    I've been using Google photos on my phone for some time now and find it fantastic. I really like how the Google eco system works together and I've been looking for a way to upload old photos stored on my laptop, to the cloud. The thing is, they are all in folders which I'd like to maintain. It seems if I upload them to Google Drive, even if they are within the "high quality"/free quota with file size, they are still counted against my Google account storage space, is this correct? I'd also like them accessible from Google Photos.
    I know creating albums on Google Photos, doesn't allow you to browse the albums in a file tree structure on drive, however, watching your video and the fact you can show the Google Photos folder in Drive, I got an idea, I went into The Google Photos folder and created a new test folder within that folder. I moved some photos into the new test folder and the photos were no longer listed in the main Google Photos folder, only in the test folder, yet they still show up on Google Photos, which may possibly be the solution many are looking for, that you can upload everything to Google Photos, but still have a folder structure within Drive, but not using any of Drive's space allowance?
    I'll need to clarify this works as I only tested it a few minutes ago. Maybe it DOES come from your space or maybe there's something else I'm not thinking of. It will of course take some time to set up if you've a lot of folders to upload, but if they are all arranged relatively close in terms of dates etc, it should hopefully be simple enough. I guess best to upload one folder at a time, arrange by oldest first, select all of them, make sure the quantity is the same as the original folder, transfer to a new child folder of Google Photos and then that's it?

    Hi, hope you can explain something for me. I recently discovering google photo and all it can do. Well, I have hardly ever gone in there, worked only in google drive. I started organizing pictures in folders in my drive. When I perused through google photos, there are a lot more photos I had in there, but not in drive, although drive is where I upload and store and organize into. Where and how did these other photos get into Photos but not in the Drive? I want to reconcile all missing pix from Picture to Drive and have all pictures in drive sync, but cannot seem to make them contain same pictures. thanks and sorry in advance if this question was confusing...

    One question since you offered to answer questions. I made a bunch of videos with my phone and they all uploaded within GP. However, out of ca. 30 videos, only 5 show up in the GD Photo folder. I thought maybe it takes times to synchronise but after 1 day, still nothing more. What could be the cause? I have set the quality setting in GP at high quality to save storage. Thank you for your help.

    Good stuff. I am relatively new to using Google to back up my pictures from my PC. When I first started my Google account, I uploaded all my pictures to Google Drive. I have since come to like auto backup to Google Photos, so I installed that on my laptop and PC and have uploaded (again) this time to Google Photos. I would like to get rid of the duplicates. If I delete a photo from the Google Photos folder in Google Drive, will I also remove them from Google Photos?

      Thanks for the reply. I am really confused now. Before watching your video, I had deleted over 1000 pictures from my Google Photos in Google Drive to free up space. They are still in the trash. It doesn't look like I've lost any from Google Photos at this point. If I empty the trash to free up space, do you think I'll lose those photos from Google Photos? They were uploaded separately with their respective resolution (full for drive and high quality for Google Photos).

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking 7 років тому

      +chrandall90 well, technically Google drive isnt not unlimited, it's just a matter of paying for that storage. It's compressing those photos down into a manageable amount of space for Google. However I don't know how they do that, I wish I worked at Google to know that for sure. :)

    Hello, quick question. If you use the option to automatically create folders in Drive from your Google Photos albums (like you did by date), does that automatically count against Drive storage quota? Or do you have to manually upload them to Drive to count against it?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking 7 років тому

      For it not to count against Drive quota, you have to upload via Google Photos. If you load anything through Drive it will count against it. Also make sure you have "high quality" turned on, otherwise you will still lose space. Thanks for watching :)

    • @adamz
      @adamz 7 років тому

      Okay! So you mean if I upload 100% of my photos to Google Photos first ('high quality') I can use Google Drive's sync folder option to organize them more granularly without taking up storage space? Thanks for the help!

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking 7 років тому

      I believe so, but they have to stay within that same Google Drive folder. Does that make sense?

    • @adamz
      @adamz 7 років тому +1

      I'm not sure I know what you mean. It seems like Google Photos is the best way to back up (the cheapest) and edit/share albums for highlight photos. But I'm looking at using Google Drive too, as a better way to organize ALL my photos (not just the best) more effectively into sub-folders while on-the-go, since the "All Photos" section of Google Photos can be a little unwieldy when you have a ton of shots. Does that seem reasonable?

    Great video. I have both apps on my iphone and I pay for Google storage. QUESTION: I want to backup my iphone pics to Drive, but NOT all the pictures on my MAC. For those pics I backup on external drives, another cloud service and selectively when I upload to Google albums using my old Picasa. I removed Google Drive from my MAC so it no long backs duplicate photos. Good Stuff. But . . . neither Google Photo or Drive app are backing up my iphone pics to Drive. What did I do wrong?

    • @tomferrara
      @tomferrara 7 років тому

      Do not see that option. But app set to all defaults. Just nosed around and may be confusing folder content with actual backups. App tells me everything is backed up and I can see most recent images via drive app. That said, there is no 2027 parent folder or Jan folder. Net, net I think I am backing up to drive but google is not attributing by monthly folders. Got to love'em!

    May 2019 and Google Photos still doesn't allow you to upload preserving folder structure. If Google continue to not listen to their customers I think I will switch elsewhere.
    You might say that I should just embrace "albums" and working with Google's idea of how to organise. But most people carefully organise their photo collections into folders (for example 2019/04_Big_USA_Roadtrip/Day_5). One of the main points of Google Photos should surely be as backup - otherwise one has to upload somewhere else anyway. But you can't backup with Google Photos because it doesn't allow you to keep your file structure; if I downloaded all of my photos again then they'd just be in one big folder. What if I wanted to switch to another platform too?
    Here would be my favoured backup system:
    1) Keep original RAW photos of my best pictures in one folder, and keep that safe by backing up on external HDD and Google Drive (using up paid storage space).
    2) Use Google Photos to save my reduced quality jpegs. These would also be backed up on external HDDs but otherwise not count to my storage space.
    How could Google object to this?: it's using Google Photos as intended (it holds my full photo collection and they can glean all of the data from it as they want...), my files are safe and if anything messes up then I can back up from Google Photos with file structure.
    I know that there are lots of nice search algorithms in Google Photos for finding your photos, arranging them etc. But a lot of people want actual control of their organisation, and it's a useless tool if you can't use it to back up your photos in a sensible way.
    Google: stop being like Apple and allow your users flexibility to work in the way which suits them.

  • @oscarjager
    @oscarjager 5 років тому

    You refer to the confusion and I think Google added to that confusion much themselves, if not created it in the first place. I understand the requirements for file and photo storage can be different but the overlap is much more than implemented and they could have overlapped functionality much better. Best example is the sharing. In GP you can only publish a a foto to all. Anyone who has the link can view those photos. I think, there are very few users who really want to share always with anybody. Yes, selected photos you may want to share with the whole world, but mostly you have photos that you do want to share but only with selected people as well. You can't do this with GP but you have to go to drive then. On top of that, when sharing pictures in GP, the GUI is very confusing. It refers to" anyone with the link" but then ask you to select the people you want to share them with. This will lead to many people thinking only these people can see those pictures. Well, it's not. Selecting people is nothing more then sending them an email with "look, I have shared some pictures with the whole world and you should know this". I find this highly confusing. On top of that, in the EU this can be conflicting with the new privacy rules and you might better share with nobody at all then. In GD you can be more precise with who you share. Was it so difficult to have the same logic in GP as well. Wouldn't the advantage of consistancy not outweight the advantage of having GP extremely simple and with that forcing many users to use 2 different ways of sharing or taking the risk that many people think they share with some people only wereas they do share with anybody? In times were everybody is talking about the issues with sharing anything and privacy rules, Google is just adding to the problem. Also, wouldn't it be more easy to have folders and albums with identical structures. So you can have an album within an album hence have the advantage of consistancy between GP and GP? They could have made a GP interface just on top of that GD Photos folder and make the underlying data, folders/albums and sharing principles identical and still offer all the advantages of having an interface more suited for photos. Basically, the thought of GP was nice, it's interface is also fine, but the whole thing is just confusing. You read the questions in the net and in this forum, you'll see how confusing this whole interface and interaction between GP and GD is. Check e.g. the questions about how to move pictures between GD and GP whereas the whole thing could have been very simple: GD Photo Folder IS IDENTICAL to GP. Google just messed up the whole thing. Not because it's too complex, but because Google though the should make it (too) simple.

      The Gallery tab that has the yellow flower on it. When I open that, there are multiple Albums. Camera, downloads, Facebook, etc. and includes the Picasa folder at the bottom. When I open Picasa, it never uploads or shows the most of the pictures. It's kinda useless, especially because I have google Photos and google Drive. I was trying to figure out how to totally eliminate Picasa since its not used anyway. For refence, I have two exact phones Galaxy S5 and one of them does not have Picasa and I don't have to mess with it because I have Google Photos and Google Drive.

    Thank you for the video. I have an external hard drive that currently has all my photos in it - by year/date. I have them in lots of folders. I'm looking for a backup storage for them in case for some reason my external hard drive fails.
    It sounds like Google drive is what I need based on that I can keep the pictures as they are now... in folders... however its a lot of GB so I'd be over my storage limit and have to buy more. If I put them on Google photos they won't be in folders but it sounds like I can do more with them, it's unlimited storage, and they'll also be in Google Drive? I'm a bit confused on that part.
    Would you recommend Google Photos for what I need or Google Drive?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking 6 років тому

      +Stacy Descoteau if you're looking to keep the same folder structure, Google Drive is what you're going to want to keep as Photos doesn't sort that way.
      If you upload them via Photos high quality, they won't take storage and you'll be able to see them in Google drive.
      Does that make sense?

    • @stacydescoteau4408
      @stacydescoteau4408 6 років тому

      Yes, makes sense. I probably don't need the same folder structure since I'm just using it as a backup. I can probably upload each folder as an album. Can I do it that way? At least it would have some assemblance of an order.

      +Brian Kaplin it's sort of possible you have to choose the selection of folders that you want to appear within the Google photos app

    Hey Scott, I hope you can help me =) I did something wrong (see below for details), now, in Google Photos (the App) are all my pictures, but in the Google Photos Section in the Menu in Google drive are just new ones. How can I update that? I don't want to upload them in original, just in high quality to save space in Google Drive. But I think the Google Photo App and the Google Photo section in Google Drive should have the same data?
    Ok, what I did: I uploaded photos automatically in Google Drive (original) and wondered why my space is nearly full. I didn't know something about the settings original vs. high quality, also I moved the Google photos folder out of drive. Than I recognized the option, switchted from original to high quality and saw, that the old pictures are still in the Google Photos App, but just the new one in the Google Photos section in Google Drive, not the old ones.

    • @lisakranz5525
      @lisakranz5525 8 років тому

      that sounds good, but when I do this on my PC, are the pictures still in the Google Photos App on my smartphone? I think it's possible to download them on the phone again (in the Google Photos App, not in a Google Drive)?

      ok, I think google photos are save, thank you :-) but now many links in Whatsapp (for nearly the last month) don't work anymore (but the pictures are in google photos).

    • @lisakranz5525
      @lisakranz5525 8 років тому

      oh, all pictures are messy now :-( when I go to device folders, there are just a view pictures in the single folders whatsapp and camera :-( and in the whatsapp chats are just the send pictures, not the arrived. I think all links are defect now :-(

    • @lisakranz5525
      @lisakranz5525 8 років тому

      the most pictures in the chats are blurred, when I click on them a popup with the message, that they aren't on the sd card is shown. I took a look at the whatsapp folder on the phone, they aren't in there anymore (don't know why), but they're in google photos. backup + deinstallation + reinstallation of whatsapp didn't work. shifting them manually in the folder causes duplicates and wrong date in google photos. I think there's no way to relink all pictures automatically. the camera folder has only two pictures too. It's a pity, but the pictures aren't lost, that's the important thing where you helped me :-)

    Hey Scott. I recently got married and am trying to find a way to share and save all of the photos that both my husband and I take. Each of us have google accounts and I've created a new google account for our "family" if needed for anything. Can you show me how we can set things up on our phones so that the photos we each take are saved to a shared or synced in google photos? Is there a way to do that automatically? I've seen this response in the Google Photos forum about how to do this, productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/photos/zCY8O4yn4DQ but I'm afraid that I don't understand what it's saying very clearly without seeing it. Any advice?? Thanks!

    So. If we delete photos from our phone under PHOTOS it will be permanently deleted, correct? But it will still be in our DRIVE if we said to automatically put Google PHOTOS into a folder....

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking 6 років тому

      +Pointerval1 as long as those photos in the photos folder are backed up via Google Photos, yes they will still be there

    • @Pointerval1
      @Pointerval1 6 років тому

      See. Thats where I am confused. Ok so I have the photos on my phone obvsiouly under the "photos" app. I go and delete a photo from there (my phone) and it also deletes that photo from from my "google photos" online? Hope this makes sense.

    • @Pointerval1
      @Pointerval1 6 років тому

      And they are backed up. So why do they still disappear from the google photos when I look at them from my computer?

    • @TechnicallySpeaking
      @TechnicallySpeaking 6 років тому

      +Pointerval1 and it's the Google Photos app? If it's deleting it from all those places it's a photo that youve backed up and it's only in a Google photos. Are you trying to free up space on your phone?
      If you delete a photo that's already backed up on Google Photos the app, you're essentially telling Google you want that gone forever. However, if you just want to free up space on your phone, go to settings > free up space and it will remove photos that you have backed up and no longer need on the device

    • @Pointerval1
      @Pointerval1 6 років тому

      Yes its to free up space on my phone. I see where to do that and its says I have 1288 that can be removed. Im just sacred of saying remove because I don't know which photos they are and if the are really back up. I dont want to loose anything :)
      I see they say they are safely backed up which Im sure they are but how do I know whats actually being backed up?

    In summary, think of Google Drive as your cloud data server (manage file storage and organization), and Google Photos as the interface app to maneuver through that data on the cloud (edit, categorize, etc). If you want to reduce the storage used against your Google Drive quota, it is likely easiest to just download those hi-res pictures and then upload them via the Google Photos app (which will store the low-res on Google Drive, and will not count against your data quota). Or even better solution, if all that maneuvering is too much of a headache then just up your storage. It costs $19.99/100GB annually. Worth the hassle, my time is valuable.

    How can we avoid the duplication of pics and videos. My pics and videos are in Google photos and I don't want that in drive, but it's showing in my drive automatically. If I delete it from drive , it also delete from Google photos too. What's the solution?🤔

    • @TechnicallySpeaking

      +Mahesh K they show in drive but they are not duplicates. if you delete from drive it will remove from Photos automatically.

      *Technically Speaking thanks for your replay.
      But if it's not duplicate, then how it's count the drive cloud memory.
      I don't want to waist my drive memory for pics as it is Google photos have unlimited storage.
      I want to use drive only for specific files like PDF and docs file . How?

    Believe it or not, not all the world moving to squint screen mobile. Squint screen pics may boast theoretical megapixels. But their dinky "made in China" lenses cannot begin to compete with even the most basic digital camera. Not until Google or Apple reinvents optical physics. Which is unlikely in the foreseeable future. Certainly not for ultra wide angle or telephoto of any reasonable focal length. So those of us who do real world photography need tools like Picasa not just to store and view pics ala Google Drive (which Windows Explorer does just dandy). But to basic edit them (e.g. crop, rotate, view metadata, work with RAW files, zoom, etc.) which Picasa does. Until you address and propose solutions to needs rooted in real world physics not just pocket messaging devices claiming to be cameras, your blog -- I contend -- is just "alternative facts." And we all know who is the maestro of those.
