  • Addendum: After corresponding with Dr. Michael Windham at Duke University who is an expert on Cheilanthoid Ferns (subfamily Cheilanthoideae in the fern family Pteridaceae) , the Astrolepis species featured here is actually new to science and has not been formally described. It was already on his radar. I thought it looked unusual.
In this episode we take a trip to the high elevations of Querétaro State, Mexico to check out a mountain that's composed entirely of marble (metamorphosed limestone).
Some of the plants we encounter are :
    The Carnivorous Plant Pinguicula moranensis
    Stevia pyrolifolia
    Nolina parviflora
    Stevia viscida
    Agave montana
    Quercus rugosaAgave salmiana ssp crassispina
Your contributions support this content. It sounds cliché but it's true. Whether it's travel expenses, vehicle repair, or medical costs for urushiol poisoning (or rockfalls, beestings, hand slices, toxic sap, etc), your financial support allows this content to continue so the beauty of Earth's flora can be made accessible to the public. At a time when so much is disappearing beneath the human footprint, CPBBD exists to document these plant species and the ecological communities they are a part of before they're gone for good.
Plants make people feel good. Plants quell homicidal (and suicidal!) thoughts. To support Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't, consider donating a few bucks to the venmo account "societyishell" or the PayPal account email crimepaysbutbotanydoesnt@gmail.com...

those ferns are so vertical, makes me think it's to minimize the surface area that's exposed when the sun is high in the sky. like the opposite of what i did the last time i got sunburn.

It is a shame so many municipalities in the American southwest chop off the inflorescences of these plants when they begin to emerge. Cities in LA and San Bernardino counties just use agave and hesperoyucca in place of concrete barriers to keep the property values up.

    • @EXROBOWIDOW
      @EXROBOWIDOW 7 днів тому +2

In L.A., it's even worse than that. I see rampant abuse of agaves every day. It's all the rage now to chop off all but the top leaves, I guess to make them have a vase shape instead of their natural shape. So of course without half their living leaves, they die. Century plants now living just five years, shoot up a bloom, then they're dead. And they're not allowed to have pups, either. And planting century plants in five foot wide parking strips, right next to sidewalks where people walk with babies in strollers and toddlers?? Great planning! [sarcasm]
I'm expecting the real fun to begin when the Washingtonia palms start to show the effects of this fad in trimming off half the live leaves. Without those horizontal leaves to feed the stem, the stems will grow weaker at the top, and one of these days in a windstorm, the stems will break, dumping huge palm frond clusters down on whoever is below.
I'm not a fan of palms and agaves, but if you're gonna grow them, treat them right!

You changed the way I look at my environment. Once again. from 13000 km around the globe. I had no idea wtf a chigger actually was, so I went on a "Hey google wtf is a chigger, read wikipedia" rabbit hole.
Most of my life I'd asssumed I was allergic to some forms of melaleuca. I love Melaleuca. I use its oil in my beard most days. Wondered why it didn't affect me like the tree. Spent quite a bit of my early life riding dirtbikes in, through, over and around melaleuca scrub. I've planted 3 in my kingdom... (It's a tiny kingdom) because they attract the lorikeets and honeyeaters.
Turns out it's not the paperbarks, it's Trombicula (eutrombicula) hirsti, the Scrub-itch mite, making me itch and giving me hives all along. Chiggers, the little fucks. All that and I got my senior citizen card today. Cheers Joey, gfy you glorious bastard ✌ 🇦🇺

to me it looked like the mountain building process folded and uplifted the limestone, there would have been layers of rock on top of what's there now that have already been eroded away, so the rock would have been under immense pressure and strain. you can kind tell from how the layers and rock cleavage are more vertical rather than in the horizontal orientation the original calcium carbonate would have been deposited in. this can happen when two tectonic plates are smashing into one another.

Question: where I live we determine whether something is a tree or a shrub based on it's diameter at breast height. Would local ecologists consider a 10" wide agave to therefore be a tree? 😂 THATS HUGE!

There's at least one species like that in California, which I learned about a few years ago. So not a huge surprise for me, but nice to see them up close in the video. Bottom line is they really only need free water to reproduce, not necessarily to stay alive. (Don't know if I'm saying this right.) Sort of like the mosquitoes that have recently immigrated to California, that fly and bite in the daytime, and only need a tiny bit of water to make babies.

I love that book too ! Odd that you did not see any selaginellas. I would have expected some with those ferns. Limestone being porous allows moisture loving species to grow in drier places. On out limestone hills we can find Parnassia palustris in full sun.
I've never had much luck growing astrolepis. I've tried as many species as I can find here.

the teeth on casuarina needles in the joints, will match in number with the cone segments if you follow a spiral of them, you can use how many it has to tell species apart, on east coast where I am, they have adapted to wet areas, such as brackish swamps and flood areas along rivers, as well as in pure sand at the beach, always a favourite tree to climb as a kid lol

Arid adapted ferns are so weird because the vast majority of ferns I have come across are quite moisture dependent, like the types of plants that at best can go dormant for a little bit and at worst just die unless they have access to peak moisture.
