What an on time word for me. I'm currently experiencing an exodus from certain things in my life and I would say that very little of it has to do with self discipline. I spoke with a great pastor friend of mine about some issues I had been going through (addictions). He basically told me, "You know these things aren't good for your body or your spirit. So how bad do you want to follow Jesus? Are you willing to get rid of them?" For someone who has never experienced addictions, it's a hard thing to grasp. With addiction, you want to let go of IT, but IT DOES NOT want to let go of you. But by his logic (although he was well meaning), I am to deliver myself to follow Christ. So then I don't need Jesus to deliver me, because I can do it on my own. If self control is really the correct word choice for what Paul listed in Galatians as one of the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit, then countless atheists who may never accept Jesus as their savior have self control. Some have greater self control than believers. But they don't even have the Holy Spirit within them.
