That Vox 0 out of 10 review always makes me smile. Cardiacs are an aquired taste for sure and when you get Tim's way of writing something just clicks and you're never the same again. It's worth saying apart from some input from Jon Poole like most Cardiacs albums this is Tims writing note for note and in most cases his melodies are written old school notes on a stave, every time signature, speed up and slow down meticulously written note for note. He was a very special human being and a very sad loss. Really enjoyed the video looking forward to the other parts!
Tim assembled the solo on Fiery Gun Hand out of about 30 solos. The sequence from Eat It Up Worms Hero through to Bellyeye is probably the most rewarding sequence of songs on any album I know.
"Insect Hoofs on Lassie" isn't nonsense! Even the bit near the end, "He Lassie not she," is based in reality (the dogs that performed as Lassie in the TV show were all male, and the human actors had to pretend the dogs weren't). All the other stuff about how Lassie would be greatly improved if he/she had a horse's mane, coloured glass eyes, insect feet and an egg sac is indisputable. You can't argue with facts.
This is a positively gargantuan undertaking you guys have begun here, and I applaud you for taking the plunge and keeping an open mind about everything going on all over the place in this epic singularity of an album. When I first heard this album about six years ago, I felt like I had finally discovered the true music of the spheres, the most heavenly thing my ears had ever come across. It absolutely lit up my brain with lights, colors, sounds, feelings I had merely glimpsed in music before, now fully fleshed out beyond my wildest dreams. This album, as you already can see, is super complex, and after one listen (or even ten, or twenty) much of what is really going on will simply not be taken in or comprehended. All Cardiacs' music truly demands numerous repeat listens to fully appreciate. Can't wait for parts 2 thru 4 of this. Keep it up!!!
KEEP GOING. Every Cardiacs track contains 30 different earworm-y hooks and every single one of them deserves their own full-length song. Also check out early performance footage (see: the Tarred and Feathered music video) where everyone's in zombie makeup and look like they're having a panic attack and only Sarah's allowed to look like she's having a good time.
First time I heard the Cardiacs was about 25 years ago. The owner of the record rental shop recommended their album "A little man And a House and the Whole world window" to me. I listened to it a few times and put it aside. Then listened to them again a few years later ... and now they are my favourite band of all times!
#cardiacs NOONE created or creates music like them. Tim Smith notated every note you can hear played on all their records. Scored and written, produced and performed. Tim never considered them to be 'a type of genre' despite them being compared to bands like Gentle Giant, XTC, and other Canterbury Scene artists. Speaking as a composer, Tim's compositions are in some ways similar to the composer Messiaen among others. There is a great video on UA-cam called 'Why I love #Cardiacs' ❤️ watch that as you will appreciate them from a more musicologist / creative position. Their music follows and breaks many rules that most of the artists you have reacted to would not even understand, let alone break. Often their songs contain pitch shifting, acceleradum and any number of time and rhythm changes within established shifts of dynamics. It is quite mind boggling what Tim achieved. This album is fantastic and their music tends to overwhelm people, just like it did with both of you as people just 'haven't heard' music being done like this. They brains can be overloaded with what they hear. Great you did this but this record would be the Last Cardiacs record I would recommend to start with. Much better to ease in with Songs for ships and Irons, On land and in the sea or A little man a house and the whole world window. Their is chatter that #kavustorabi and #jimsmith Tim's brother will complete #LSD - the record that they did not complete due to Tim's death. Check out Ditzy Scene and Cardiacs Silvery also. #cardiacs #progressive #timsmith
Totally agree that this was not the best (easiest) entry into Cardiacs. You guys brought up some interesting insights that would have made sense to you, having heard earlier albums. Greatly enjoying your measured reaction.
Brilliant album, excellent reaction, can't wait to see the rest! Your hesitation, confusion and disorientation is totally understandable. Unless your brain is wired a very particular way, most people are unlikely to "get" Cardiacs on first listen, but you're doing an admirable job of at least trying to get where they're coming from. I'll be fascinated to see how you feel when you've made it all the way through this beast of an album!
Funny lumping Ween and Cardiacs together. We put both bands on stage over here at Leeuwarden (Netherlands), Cardiacs in 1988, Ween in 1990. Both were of the best shows we ever had over here. Great to see you picking them up over there!
A huge inspiration for me too. Sometimes at rehearsals I would have an idea for a song based on my love of Cardiacs, and everyone would look at me like I was a nutter. "He's just the drummer. What does he know"
I stopped reading NME because of their unjustified butchering of Cardiacs. Cardiacs did one of the best shows I have ever seen over here in Leeuwarden (Netherlands)
Truly one of the greatest most unique bands to ever exist, though I never recommend sing to God as a starting point, in fact I am of the camp that sees on land and in the sea as their best album, always preferred the original(sort of) line up, that's why I use the live film/album all that glitters is a mares nest as an introduction, in fact once had a guy tell me with passion that oasis were the best live band Britain ever produced I laughed and said I got a band way better that you have never heard of, within two tracks he called me a bastard for being right, staggering me and my friends watched virtually ever weekend after the pub, they were all musicians and they are definitely a musicians band. See all the people they have inspired it's a very diverse group you wouldn't see obvious connections, for example Mike Patton, Shane from Napalm death, all of blur, Dave Grohl, Radiohead and even Elton John
💜 This was so very cool, guys. Loved your reactions and truly enjoyed the music on this reaction. I've heard of The Cardiacs but never listened to their music. I look forward to seeing the follow up reactions.
Easily one of the greatest double albums of all time
Loving the curiosity and openness you guys are showing. Cardiacs have so much goodness to explore.
❤️🤟🙏❤️

It was over 100 takes actually that Jon Poole put down.

@Welp Here We Are On UA-cam Thanks guys!!!
KEEP GOING.

Thank you for watching
Dave Grohl from Foo Fighters recently discovered Cardiacs and wrote a piece about them in Classic Rock magazine (UK). Word is getting out.
Very cool

Are you aware of this offering from Half Man Half Biscuit?

My fave band of all time. This is just the tip of the iceberg too, heaps more for you to discover!
Cardiacs were accompanied by Radiohead in the late 80s. Also, they’re a huge inspiration for Mike Patton, Blur, Oceansize, and Napalm Death.
A huge inspiration for me too. Sometimes at rehearsals I would have an idea for a song based on my love of Cardiacs, and everyone would look at me like I was a nutter. "He's just the drummer. What does he know"
@@DazzleMonroe as a fellow drummer and Cardiacs fan, I feel your pain!
VOX Magazine don't know s**t lol.
Watched this video again while smoking up, had a minor religious experience. Thanks lads
yayyy cardiacs
Vox magazine was a lot of ex NME journalists, as a rule the NME hated Cardiacs
I stopped reading NME because of their unjustified butchering of Cardiacs. Cardiacs did one of the best shows I have ever seen over here in Leeuwarden (Netherlands)
NME journalists in the 1980s were the most pretentious bunch of self important individuals you could ever have the misfortune to encounter.

Yeah crazy intro for the band 🙃
Personally, I would forsake all bands just to bring Tim back.
Me too
💜 This was so very cool, guys. Loved your reactions and truly enjoyed the music on this reaction. I've heard of The Cardiacs but never listened to their music. I look forward to seeing the follow up reactions.
Thanks for doing this , welcome to the pond
❤️🤟🙏🤟❤️
I read somewhere that the solos in Fiery Gun Hand was small snippets if leads edited together.
insect hoofs on lassie is not nonsensical.. its a weird contemplation on what is in the mind of a creator god
Look up Cyriak if you haven't I would love for him to do an animated video to Insect Hoofs on Lassie.
I bet you think the Cardiacs cant play this live......Hahahahah!
Nope. We never felt that
You need a pair of good headphone to listen to this music not ear buds.
they are high end and sound amazing :) all good :)
