Gas vapors man, it all has to do with gas vapors, at least I think that's the reason for those moronic gas spouts. On the metal can, you can use a fuel shut off, kinda like the ones on riding mowers. You drill a hole and put the rubber grommet in, then push the valve into the grommet, works great and no need to worry about leakage and losing anything. Hope this helps and I think the all mighty EPA came up with these spouts that spill more than the old ones !

Very good idea! I was going to suggest cutting the neck and shoulders off a small metal can. Soldering that to the big can, over the hole. Then he'd have a vent with a screw on cap! Your idea is faster, and better!

Just did this to my red plastic can. It pours FAST now. The vent plug that opens is tight, but when I tip the can upside down it does have a very slow leak. I maybe didn't drill perfectly. Still, I'm sold. Gonna go replace my other can spouts right now. I got a 3 pack on amazon, fyi.

We can't buy those kits in NY so my buddy had to send one from Louisiana. He also suggested doing the drilling with the can upside down to keep the plastic chips out.
I have since heard that the kit made for the blue water cans fit for gas, but I haven't tested it.

I bought my E Z Pour spouts at our local Atwood's Ranch & Home (like a TSC) a few years ago and they're still in use. I would suggest you get rid of the cap and lanyard. My Massey Feruson tractor has had a cap w/lanyard somewhere in the gas tank for a couple years now. so far not a problem but maybe in the future. Just FYI. All the best.

Great video. I've been fighting the same thing for awhile. I just use a metal valve stem (VTR TR-416-S 1" Outer Mount Metal Valve Stem (4 Pack) $8.75) for a vent just remove the valve core, drill correct hole for valve stem, thread valve stem on a piece of wire to fish it in from the inside and add the retaining nut to the valve, remove wire and replace the valve stem cap. LEAVE OUT THE VALVE CORE. Just remove cap to vent. Way better than a golf tee. I've never had any rain or snow get in my gas using this method.

valve cores are not Gasoline safe. It will degrade over time. Cans are made of polyethylene for this reason. Gas cans are pressurized containers.

We definitely need to do this to our gas cans, those new spouts are the WORST!! No matter how tight you get them on, they leak when you try to pour it, and more gas goes on the ground than in the tank you are trying to fill!!! I think my husband just ended up pouring it into the lawn mower straight from the can with no spout on it! LOL I also remember when gas cans had the little vent cap on them and they poured out FAST!!

You found the same solution I did a few months ago. I converted over more than a dozen cans to those new spouts. But if you really want to move some gas go down to your local race car parts house and buy the 5 gallon cans that racer use to fill up their cars!

I hate the new cans( the protectionist have even got to gas cans). . Glad to see this video . I was able to find a cheap plastic can that did have a vent but it has that stupid Spring loaded pore spout. The nice $80 cans come with out any safety features .that's why I will probably be buying them in the futre .Will be doing this to mine as well tired of spilling gas because of the safety features.

Any well thought out law comes from...you guessed it...Cal-if-orn-i-a. "The Portable Fuel Container (PFC) regulations are an important concept in our efforts to improve California's air quality. PFCs, also known as gas cans…" and don't use a hair dryer in the shower either.

    • @john90430
      @john90430 3 роки тому

California's air quality would be vastly improved if they were to solve their "homeless" problem once and for all. The odor of human feces on the streets ruins the air quality.

This all started with one moron throwing gas on a fire and setting himself on fire, he sued Blitz the AMERICAN Mfg. of the can and won, almost or did put the Mfg. out of business, since then these new expensive cans are the result. If you go to garage sales and estate sales you can find the old style cans....i discovered this and have sold A LOT on ebay...i buy them cheap clean them up with goo gone make sure they pour correctly with no leaks. The old style cans are very popular, now i see with this video someone has come up with a fix for the new cans....kudos to them, i hope they are rich beyond their wildest dreams......the worst thing you could ever hear is "Hello, I`m from the government and i`m here to help you " Love your channel !!

No no no. think fuel pump. Something like this- www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GTJ3ZCS or an actual 12v fuel pump and a little 12v battery and some hose... never have to pick the stupid can up again to fill the tractor. I use mine for gas and diesel.

the black collar is the fine thread one and its wrong for that red gas can, take a look at the threads on the can and the two collars, the coarse thread yellow collar is the right one for those threads. I have the same spout kit its great, but the majority of cans take the coarse thread collar and your threads look coarse 0 it may feel like its right but take a look and see.

Nice video. One thing you could have done that may have helped make the video a bit better would be to show the speed that the cans poured before the modification. This would have made it so we can see a real comparison between before and after. I agree though that the new cans are horrible!

I've done the same on most of my cans...it's an additional purchase but what will make your life much easier for filling that tractor or any vehicle that will take a bit of fuel are the super siphon hoses you can get off Amazon. www.amazon.com/Super-Siphon-Hose-Pack/dp/B000ZORJ1E/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1519795823&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=super+safety+siphon&psc=1 These are what I use to fill mine, you just sit the gas can on top of the tractor, shake the hose a few times until it starts to siphon and it does all the work.

I happen to like the push style spouts on SMALL cans and with the push and turn safety collars cut off, that way you can just push and go, real convenient for small chainsaw tanks. For large tanks and cans they are horrific, you need this spout kit!

I thought it was just my and my son's weak hands that made these new gas cans a nightmare to even open...
I will be modifying my gas cans.
I also believe the new gas cans are EXTREMELY UNSAFE!!!! I've only put 2 gallons of gasoline in my cheap $11.00 Walmart sold 5 gallon AmeriCan gasoline can once and it was bubbled up from air pressure accumulating from the Alaskan sun beating down on it for the past 3 months, which is a joke because it has not seen much of any sun or any real heat because we live in Alaska!!!!
I will explore buying the metal cans. Thank you for taking the time to film this video. Fishing line tied to the cap and can will reduce the chance of losing the cap. 😉
Thank you again for sharing this useful video. We Alaskans collect gas cans for every day use as well.

Definitely converting my gas can over. I remembering buying it and looking for one with the old style spout and couldn't find one. It never fails that I'll spill gas down the side of the mower while trying to fill it up.

You were smarter than you knew it, in where you chose to put that yellow vent in the plastic can. The handle is the logical choice, and most people put it there. But there is a seam right there. That seam cracks, way too often. Either while drilling, or sometime afterward from the stress of carrying it. Good job!

If you want to make your empty time even faster, you can buy a small battery powered inline pump on a straw to pump gas from your gad cans into the tractor without all the lifting and time wasting
