  • This is a video I am very fond of. We start out on the fishing docks of Point Judith in the port of Galilee and end up getting quite an education from from an ATB Captain. Captain Chuck tells us how he got there and how the ATB world is so different from the wire work and Bunkering that I am familiar with.

    I worked with Capt. Chuck as his mate for 7 years. He not only taught me more about tug boating then anyone else, he has been and will always be a true friend. God bless you both.

    Thank you, Tim! Captain Chuck is the embodiment of all the hopes and dreams that ADM Maurice Bresnahan brought to MMA as President of the academy.
    Congratulations for interviewing Captain Chuck and allowing your viewers to see and hear a true professional seafarer describe how he went from behind a retail counter to entering the Academy at 25 years old. Bet he still remembers his first “Viking Bath”!
    Keep ‘em coming, Cap! Young men and women need to know this world has places for them to grow and learn other than the traditional college experience.

    Just outside the approach to Buzzards Bay this summer, I saw what I thought was a coastal oil tanker heading for the canal.... as it got closer, I saw that it was an ATB.... they are massive and look more like ships than tug and barge. They’re impressive!! Hope you got to finish your breakfast before it got cold!

    I absolutely loved this video. Retired Captain I meant to say on another one of your videos that I was on, when I was talking about one of our sons being a captain for Crowley maritime on one of their largest ATB. I may have told you this already. But, if I did, this is the trouble with getting old. You forget things!! Lol. I retired from MSC, = Military Sealift Command. 32 & a half years. Since I was, and still am a member of AMO, American Maritime Officers Union, you could say that I’m double dipping. On my retirement. 😃 I retired with my Masters, any tonnage.

    Just getting to this video. "Basic Training" is good for everyone! Makes me realize how much better our youth could do with some mandatory service to this great country after finishing high school. Nearly 37 years of US Army active and active reserves as one career coupled with 42 years as an active and reserve LEO on the civilian side for me. I've been blessed and I've worked hard as well. I completely get the apprenticeship or starting from the bottom, to learn and fully understand whatever you're doing. Great interview! Thanks Captain!

    Love Rhode Island. Spent three years stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Newport, RI. Came there as a 1st class petty officer, made chief petty officer and left as an ensign -- good duty station! The best part of it was that I learned to sail in Newport. I have fond memories of sailing in Newport harbor in the evenings after work. Now about those WINTERS! Thanks for jogging the good memories. As always, I thoroughly enjoy your videos and experiences. Loved this!
    Thebpart about coming from deep sea and thinking you can just be a captain resonated with me. I came from a (brief period, had to save my marriage 😅) on containerships after dping my cadetship on them straight to dual waterjet fast rescue boats and I felt like an absolute deer in the headlights. Had to learn how to drive, how to navigate and how to think about stuff from scratch.
    I think having both perspectives is good though, and am looking to try to secure a job on some blue water ships soon to upgrade my license.

    Thank you for this video which explained to me many of the finer points to make the distinction between ATBs and push-gear operations. It was a real eye-opener, especially the various skills (and 'opportunities' for disaster) that are called for in ATBs/push gear/wire and docking tugs.
    I'll also now have a better idea of whom I am calling (ATB or tug pushing ahead) when I need to make arrangements to cross a traffic lane or recommended route because AIS tells me who is out there but NOT what type of tug it is.
    Here is a question I still have: When they refer to a "unit" does that mean it is an ATB?

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you for watching and for being a Patron! Yes, when you hear "unit" it can be an ATB or a conventional tug in push gear. CUOTO

    The construction industry is/was very similar, you start at the bottom and show you can work your way up. If you ever need to quit a job, quit nice cos come a day you may need to ask that guy for a job, he could have changed companies but I bet he's not lost his memory.
    I needed to get a phone number of a construction company starting a huge project in Cairo Egypt, but the name they were going under was not listed. So I called a consultant company that had been the management company for the client on projects I'd worked on. The operator put me through to the tunnel dept., I explained my reason for calling, they asked what position I was looking for and offered me Senior Inspector of Works on the same project. That job lasted 15 continuous years, plus when I did leave then for another project for 4 years. I gave them a call and went right back to work with them.

      Congratulations and welcome! Oh Yes there is!!! First, make sure you have seen my video "How to work on a tug boat". Then once you get hired, the process can take a few months or a few years - be patient, Keep your eyes open and your mouth shut. Every new green hire wants to understandably fit in, but you will need to earn your stripe before you are one of the crew. Every new guy always wants to tell us what they know or how great they were before coming to work with us. A smart, hard working new hire has no need to tell anyone how good he is. (We will all know by watching you.) Remember that the job (working part) is only a very small part of what makes you a good shipmate. You have to live and work together. Help out and if that means you have to work during your off time or help someone that doesn't help you, so be it. Hang it there, keep your chin up and your mouth shut. Looking forward to seeing you on the dock. CUOTO
