Proper Mouthpiece Placement for Trumpet Players

  • Throughout my several years of trumpet playing, I would play on the red of my top lip. This led to various problems such as note accuracy, endurance, flexibility, and bad tone. I have worked to get my lips inside of the mouthpiece to help get rid of the problems that I was having. It is coming along for the most part. I am still working to get comfortable with both of my lips inside of the mouthpiece. Hopefully this placement works for you. Enjoy!

    I'm a beginner trumpet player and I basically have the same lips so I need videos like this one. I can't get a consistent note out for nothing, but I'll keep trying. Gotta admit that it's pretty frustrating.

      It is frustrating. It was definitely frustrating for me. Air would always come out because my top lip would overlap my bottom. Now, I play with my bottom lip out just enough so that my top lip has it to buzz against.

    I like your explanation. I have a 1960s OLDS cornet. I am a beginner. I cleaned cornet, dried and oiled all valves. Valves are correctly place. There's no sound. What could it be? Could it still be wet?

      Your valves are misaligned. When you put your valves in, make sure the number is on the left as you insert it.

      I am a beginner learning to play a 1960s OLDS cornet. OLDS cornet sounds seem more trombone-like sound. Still having difficulty with correct embouchure. I get tired after a little practice and then air sound comes out. Lots of physical on lips, teeth, etc. Does this seem correct? and normal? Thanks, Mr. Angelo

    Great video! I have a bigger top lip than my lower lip and I have been playing like that for about 2 years. I have a great mid and lower register tone and good flexibility. I play a lot of lead parts in the upper register in band. Once I start going to the C above the staff, my tone becomes tight and my mouthpiece tends to naturally press against my upper lip and it tires my lips very quickly. Do you know if it is an issue with my mouthpiece placement or something else? I have been suffering this issue for a long time:(
    Thanks so much!

    Hey! Good video. I had the same problem with the mouthpice placement, mi lips are too big so, do you think I should place all my upper lip into the mouthpice? Because is causing me a lot of register and ressistance problems so I'm placing it a little bit lower

    • @trumpettipswithjc6609
      @trumpettipswithjc6609  5 років тому +2

      Hey there! I actually tried putting all of my top lip in the mouthpiece once, but it’s impossible for me to get a buzz without my bottom lip in the mouthpiece as well. I started out really low and I’ve been moving the mouthpiece higher. You’ll have register and resistance issues when you change your placement in the beginning, but with consistent proper practicing of the trumpet, your register and resistance issues will slowly but surely go away.

    I have played trumpet since 6th grade and I am in 8th grade. I play with the mouthpiece on the top lip fleshy part like you said you used to. Did you have any problems with response when you first switched your embochoure??

    • @trumpettipswithjc6609
      @trumpettipswithjc6609  5 років тому +2

      I actually did have problems with getting the trumpet to respond. Especially after playing for a while because the rim of the mouthpiece would be in the way of the part where the top lip buzzes and I would get air and no sound. It's almost like putting your hand over someones mouth as they're speaking. They're unable to speak with a hand over their mouth. Same thing with the rim of the mouthpiece being on the top lip.

      I’ve had this same issue during my college years. To this day, I’m still working to get my lips in the right spot. It takes a long time to change. I bought a mouthpiece vizualizer which allows me to see where I need to place the lips. When working with your new placement, take your time with your approach. Play with slower tempos so that you can focus listen to what you’re doing and how you can fix any issues that may appear.

    Hi , I am a reabilitating trumpet player (haven't played in years)keep playing in the red! How do I fix that with big lips?? Tucking in? Sounds comes out fuzzy...not clean 😧😧

    • @trumpettipswithjc6609
      @trumpettipswithjc6609  4 роки тому +1

      I have big lips so I tuck my lips inside the mouthpiece. After that, I also made sure to keep my aperture open so that I can blow more air through my lips and into the trumpet to produce a nice and round trumpet sound . With consistent practice, I eliminated most of the fuzzy sound that I would produce when playing on the red of my lips.

    Been playing for 7 years and my teacher said that my tone is good and my mouth piece is mostly on my bottom lip, but when i try to put the mouth piece in the middle its just hard for me to make a clear sound. But im really comfortable playing with my bottom lip, do i have to change it? Cuz if i do I'll be like a "beginner" again

    • @trumpettipswithjc6609
      @trumpettipswithjc6609  Рік тому +1

      My apologies for the late reply, but if your tone/range is not suffering from your bottom lip being in the mouthpiece more than the top lip, then you don’t need to make an adjustment. For me though, I had to move the mouthpiece higher on my lips because my tone, range, and endurance would suffer big time. Moving the mouthpiece higher on my lips has allowed me to play with a better sound longer, and my endurance hasn’t suffered as much. My range has improved sound wise, and it has increased slowly but surely.

    Hello!
    Thanks for the video!
    Can you tell me please , how or with the help of what exercises is it possible to raise the low position of mouthpiece?
    I've played trumpet already 15 years , I've got a very wide top lip and all time I play the trumpet with low position , often , after hard work day (when I have a strong pressure of mouthpiece) my top lip become sick.. and after it I must have a few days rest because my top lip need heal
    Thanks in advance

    • @trumpettipswithjc6609
      @trumpettipswithjc6609  2 роки тому

      Hello! I’ve actually had the same issue with letting my top lip heal before I started playing again, and it’s because I was physically pressing the rim of the mouthpiece on the red of my top lip. You have to apply the mouthpiece pressure below the bottom lip so that your top lip can buzz freely. As far as raising the position of the mouthpiece on your lips, that’s just a matter of looking in the mirror and making sure that you see yourself placing your lips inside of the mouthpiece. I’ve even bought a mouthpiece vizualizer, which allows you to see where your lips are when placing the mouthpiece on your lips.

      Warning (Long response)
      If you feel that your sound, embouchure strength, and endurance is where you want it, then don’t change your mouthpiece placement. This video is for those who can’t progress with the mouthpiece low on the lips. For me, placing the mouthpiece higher on my lips benefits my sound for sure. I’m still working on a higher placement myself.

    I too placed the mouthpiece very low on the lips. The sound was thin and I had no flexibility, just like you said. Fortunately I changed my emboucher, now the mp is higher on the lips. However, my lips are quite thick, and I can only play by bending the bottom lip over the bottom teeth, because there's simply no space inside. People in the band say it looks weird and they are right as my bottom lip totally disappears.... I have been quite concerned with this, I believe it stops me from developing... Am I playing wrong and if so, would a bigger mp help? I play on a Bach 7c. Sry for my English, I'm Portuguese... Great video and very informative!

    • @trumpettipswithjc6609
      @trumpettipswithjc6609  5 років тому +2

      I use to bend my bottom lip over my bottom teeth. As a result, the notes on the trumpet (specifically the notes in the upper register) will not respond. Getting a mouthpiece with a bigger cup size will help because it allows you to bring out your bottom lip from underneath your top lip. That way, your tone will become wider and darker, and your notes will respond because your top lip now has the bottom lip to vibrate against.

    Ok, so right off the bat , your comments on playing on centre is wrong in respect that some players have crooked teeth … sometimes as you get older your teeth might go out of alignment or move around due to body changes that happen to everyone as they get older !! Not everyone has straight teeth !! Mine straight but moved out of shape as I got older … I went with the flow and I play better than I ever did …. Off centre !!
    I’m not saying that your wrong , but it’s the way that your trying to get across is off by saying that you have to play on centre !!
    There is hundreds of players that play off centre and are extremely exceptional players !! I’m not a screamer but I certainly can get up there and in key !
    Reference:: Maynard’s positioning was off centre !! Didn’t seem to affect his playing!!
    As a rule , it’s a touchy subject, just sayin!!
