Marker Wadden - Positive impetus to the ecology of the Markermeer Lake

More than four years after the start of the construction of the Marker Wadden, the nature reserve in the Markermeer lake in the Netherlands, we visited this bird paradise to capture the developments on and around the five islands. Building with Nature techniques played a key role in this innovatieve project that we executed for Natuurmonumenten and Rijkswaterstaat. In order to build the Marker Wadden we dredged around 30 million cubic meters of silt, clay, peat and sand from the bed of the lake and used this soft material to create the islands and to restore the lake’s ecological balance at the same time.
