  • Our friends over at Area 51 Tether Co. loaned us some prototypes of their next generation USB-C tether cables to test out. These awesome new cables feature an upgraded crush-proof design and redesigned ports for unmatched durability. Plus, upgraded booster chips mean you can extend up to 62ft without any additional power. We put them through the ultimate stress test. Are they worth the hype?
These next generation cables will be available for preorder on Friday March 25. Check out www.area51teth... for more information.

Loved my 31 footer until yesterday it just started failing mid way through a shoot, no visible damage. Lasted almost 6 months!

Good point about the IQ4! Could you perhaps reverse the cable for it? Would that still work?

Unfortunately not, the cable is directional so it will only work with the right angle end plugged into the camera.

I clicked on the link you provided. There are SO many options. Which one are you demo-ing? The Los Alamos PRO+ Right Angle USB-C to USB-C Cable 9.5m/31ft at $140? Please advise. I use Tether Tools and sometimes the connection is lost for no apparent reason. I use Canon R5 cameras to a MacBook Pro, USB-C connections. Need one in a few days. Your prompt reply will be appreciated. Thanks in Advance.

are they better than tether tools?

  •  2 роки тому

the price of those cables tho :D
Tether Tools for the rescue I guess? And interesting that test at the end of the video with the TT cable, many people use it without any issues. Could it be that USB-A adapter being a crap.

I didn’t have time to include all of my tests in this edit, but I did try multiples tests with multiple dongles and 2 different tether tools cables, one of them was brand new and unused. I could not get the camera or the hard drive to connect reliably. I don’t think it’s an A to C issue. I regularly use other brands of USB A to C tether cables regularly with no issues. My honest two cents: I used tether tools cables exclusively for many years and even had a small endorsement deal with them…until I got a large batch of bad cables about 5 years ago and their customer service was less than sympathetic. As a result, I switched to Area51 (at the time still called Capture Management). From that point on, nearly all of my connection issues were magically resolved and I never looked back. Over on my instagram, I field a lot of “tech support” questions from other techs and photographers on a near daily basis and a large majority of the tethering issues people reach out to me about end up being the result of using tether tools cables. I’m aware that thousands of people use them daily with few or no issues, but in my experience they have an extremely high failure rate - and often people misdiagnose issues that are actually caused by the cable as software problems.

@@brooksdigi3301 I mean, the little white dongle might have been the issue when connected to a long cable.
I use a 13 dollars 5 meters USB Mini B 5 pin to USB-C with my Canon 6SMKII connected to my MBP 2016 and all works fine.
I literally just bought a 5 meters active USB-C extension for like 20 dollars to use with this cable I mentioned above. Crossing my fingers that it will work.
Both Tether Tools and specially this Area51 prices are surreal tbh

@ I understand. Before Area51 launched their 31ft cables, I regularly used these dongles with 15ft Area51 and other brands of A type cables paired with 15ft and 31ft startech extensions with no issues. I tested multiple other dongles during my testing for this video and the cables didn’t work with either of them. I’ve reliably used these tether tools cables in the past with Sony and Phase One cameras. As I said in the video, the Fuji GFX is the ultimate camera to test with because it refuses to connect with certain cables that do work with other cameras - its a great way to weed out inferior quality cables.

Area 51's reply on why their $140 cable failed after less than 6 months was: "We have cables that last 1 month and others that last for years, there is many factors. We continue to improve and grow and we hear everyone’s feedback."

Turns out - if you sneeze on these cables they get downgraded to USB2. I've never come across a more fickle USB 3.2 cable.
