  • Exploring Geylang: Singapore's Red-Light District | 4K Night Walking Tour.
This video was recorded last June 8, 2024 at around 08:30 PM.
Hi Friends. Today, we are going to stealthily explore Singapore's famous red-light district, Geylang, located on the eastern edge of central Singapore. Known for its vibrant and controversial atmosphere, Geylang was originally a Malay village before turning into a plantation area in the 19th century. As Singapore grew, Geylang developed into a lively neighborhood with distinctive shophouses, diverse food options, and a mix of traditional and modern influences.
This area is one of the few places in Singapore where prostitution is legally permitted within regulated zones. Brothels operate openly, and sex workers are commonly seen, especially along various Lorongs. The history of Geylang's red-light district dates back to the early 20th century. With rapid urbanization, Geylang became a hub for businesses, including entertainment and vice activities. By the mid-20th century, it was known for nightlife and adult entertainment, drawing locals and tourists alike.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Geylang's red-light district grew more prominent. While prostitution was illegal in most of Singapore, it was tolerated in designated areas within Geylang. This led to the proliferation of brothels, especially from Lorong 8 to Lorong 24. Authorities took a pragmatic approach, regulating these activities to control crime and exploitation.
Despite its reputation, Geylang has preserved its unique cultural and architectural charm. The mix of red-light activities with the area's rich history creates a distinctive character. Today, Geylang is known for its adult entertainment and renowned culinary scene, offering a wide range of cuisines.
Efforts to modernize Geylang have received mixed reactions. While there is a push to clean up the area, there is also a desire to preserve its historical significance. Geylang remains a microcosm of Singapore's broader story, balancing tradition and modernity. The most lively red-light activities are found in the even-numbered Lorongs, particularly from Lorong 8 to Lorong 24, with Lorong 12, Lorong 16, and Lorong 18 being especially notable for their nightlife and concentration of brothels.
