Sega 32X - If you're open to doing consoles, the behind-the-scenes internal disputes between Sega's American and Japanese branches by the mid-90s had a hand to play in this console's doom and the company eventually ditching hardware development all together. 5. Sonic X-Treme - Wonder why the Saturn didn't have its own original Sonic game? Like the 32X, this also had its own behind-the-scenes nightmares that eventually led to its cancellation.

@@stranger59 It kind of already came and went, actually. Team Ninja? The whole time? Even when they were making classic games everyone loved? So the Yakuza can launder their money through the creation of good games instead of the creation of pachinko machines?
Anyone else coming in late, in 2021 Valhalla was merged with Soleil, who this year released Wanted: Dead, a game which, had anyone bought or played Devil's Third, would probably be described as "a spiritual successor to Devil's Third"
Valhalla also developed a train board game called Momotaro Dentetsu for the 3DS. It's a franchise in Japan originally owned by Hudson but Nintendo published that one. It was reasonably big and that probably covered a fair bit of their costs for a while.
As for Wha Happun to Valhalla, it spun off an international branch based in Canada, called Valhalla Games International, which has since bought all IPs and properties of the original Tokyo-based Valhalla and thus effectively subordinated and consumed the original. Then that Valhalla, in turn, was merged by order of its parent company, Hong Kong-based Wake Up Interactive, into Soleil Ltd., another Wake Up Interactive development studio. But then a month before that, Wake Up itself was bought out by Chinese gaming giant Tencent. To summarize, as of last year, Valhalla has effectively ceased to be an independent name. It's now owned by Soleil, which is owned by Wake Up Interactive, which is owned by Tencent. Funnily enough, Itagaki actually wasn't lying when he said he had friends across the world bankrolling him.
I'd love to see the story of how Tatsunoko vs Capcom came to the west. A crossover fighting game where half the cast had never been to the west, done by a studio that was most well known in the west... for Speed Racer, who wasn't even in the game.
So he’s mad that Nintendo didn’t force publications to change their initial reviews and because they ended up giving honest reviews he questions the credibility of those reviews? I… what?
Soleil is Valhalla, they had to change their name because of a lawsuit, Itagaki is no longer part of the company as well I believe and is apparently creating games in Italy at least from what he claims on his Facebook.
You know, “I’m a mathematician but I’m no good at counting” sounds pretty mockable, but it’s surprisingly true to life. Basically everyone in my Mathematics degree program had an inside joke with the same sentiment: the people you can trust least to do simple arithmetic are the people with math degrees. Anyway, you should have done a Tommy Wiseau impression whenever you quoted Itagaki. It would have been hilarious.
God, I finally got it: this is the Japanese Duke Nukem 3D. Dated...everything, drastically different than the project originally shown, development hell, trying to be cool but actually wack protagonist
0:43 I'm a huge Paper Mario fan who labels the first two games as the highlights of the series, but I still enjoyed Sticker Star (and Color Splash) for what it was. Now, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash...oh my goodness...
I knew this game would be in trouble when I saw the main characters' visual design. It's the kind of thing that you'd expect would be a piece of concept art in the corner of a muddled page and nothing more.
Sooo, I decided to see if Valhalla is still around in our lord and savior of 2023 and this is what I got: "Valhalla's Parent company, Wake Up Interactive, merged the staff and operations of Valhalla Game Studios into another subsidiary, Soleil Ltd, in December 2021, effectively closing down Valhalla" So there doesn't appear to be Valhalla anymore (Although bizarrely, their site is still up and has posts as recent as February 13th as of this post). They also have a UA-cam so..thats something. As for Tomonobu Itagaki himself, He was Supreme Advisor on "Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time" and was last seen apart of a project called "Warrior" in 2020 (which, like his position, is TBC at the moment).
Itagaki-san announced on facebook many months back that he's stepped away from making games in any real capacity. He's just a consultant/teacher now. Such a sad downfall :( , I still think the current team ninja is mostly trash without him there (outside of Ni-oh). I feel much worse for the people he took with him from team ninja and sega though, I mean you look at his pedigree from 1998-2008 and it's filled with successful games AND tecmo did get successfully sued after they left for failure to pay due compensation for wages earned. Itagaki probably looked like a savior "hey I'm going to do my own thing, we can make our own game with money from Microsoft , they love me over there". Just imagine the world we might have had , if MS had just floated a loan over to Valhalla back when they started up, he might have had devils third ready in 2011 and maybe it would have been a better game ? Maybe by now, in 2020, we'd have gotten 2-3 more titles out of the studio as Xbox one exclusives instead of .. crackdown 3 :(. Anyway, keep up the good work there Matt :D love these little post mortems.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. was another flop from Nintendo that year. Although that game had its merits at least, it failed more so in the marketing and figuring out who it was for. I want to say the premise of that game is as ridiculous as the story behind Devil's Third. But that would not be true.
I thought Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. had a decent enough idea trying to mix League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Pulp, and Valkyria Chronicles, it just didn't come together as well as it should have. I personally thought the game was decent and deserved more of a chance than what it got, but I admit I could be a minority on that front.
Surprised you didn't mention that he basically left Valhalla from the sound of it to help other developers make games. Like you said I have no idea how they/he survived all this time.
I'm surprised you didn't talk about Rockshot that was released on Steam by Soleil. This went extremely under the radar for most people but Rockshot IS Devil's Third Online but as a steam release. I don't even know how I managed to play it when it was available in early access in 2018. It was technically the global release of Devil's Third Online, just under a new name. This game now has also shutdown.
Gotta love how Itagaki bitched and bragged about how his game would be the best Online game on a Nintendo console and that Nintendo was screwing over his shit game when in reality, it was his game that was garbage and secondly, Nintendo made Splatoon which was way fucking better and got a sequel on the switch and is now getting a third game

4. Sega 32X - If you're open to doing consoles, the behind-the-scenes internal disputes between Sega's American and Japanese branches by the mid-90s had a hand to play in this console's doom and the company eventually ditching hardware development all together.

Anyone else coming in late, in 2021 Valhalla was merged with Soleil, who this year released Wanted: Dead, a game which, had anyone bought or played Devil's Third, would probably be described as "a spiritual successor to Devil's Third"
Did you just try and shame my Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast?
Nobody shames DK: Barrel Blast and gets away with it!

I'm a huge Paper Mario fan who labels the first two games as the highlights of the series, but I still enjoyed Sticker Star (and Color Splash) for what it was.
Now, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash...oh my goodness...
I knew this game would be in trouble when I saw the main characters' visual design. It's the kind of thing that you'd expect would be a piece of concept art in the corner of a muddled page and nothing more.
Sooo, I decided to see if Valhalla is still around in our lord and savior of 2023 and this is what I got:
"Valhalla's Parent company, Wake Up Interactive, merged the staff and operations of Valhalla Game Studios into another subsidiary, Soleil Ltd, in December 2021, effectively closing down Valhalla"
So there doesn't appear to be Valhalla anymore (Although bizarrely, their site is still up and has posts as recent as February 13th as of this post).
5:28 I thought that music sounded familiar. Battle Arena Toshinden 2 - Eiji theme. Aaaaaah, the nostalgia. :)
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. was another flop from Nintendo that year. Although that game had its merits at least, it failed more so in the marketing and figuring out who it was for. I want to say the premise of that game is as ridiculous as the story behind Devil's Third. But that would not be true.
Dan August I picked it up because it reminded me of Valkyria Chronicles mechanically. Never got too into it though.
Nintendo keep trying to play the "WE'RE FOR EVERYONE! WE DO MATURE STUFF ON OUR SYSTEM!" card but honestly they have no clue... and that's okay.
Here I am, half listening to a year old video in the background, and suddenly I hear Matt swear in Anglo-Québécois at 6:24
Surprised you didn't mention that he basically left Valhalla from the sound of it to help other developers make games.

I thought he was exaggerating with the whole Japanese Tommy Wiseau thing. Nope, dude is literally Tommy Wiseau, but as a Japanese game developer.
