He started out with a beautiful, enthrallingly magnetic "baby prince" voice and I have listened to Him mature over the years into the amazingly magical voice of "My King"🙏👑🤗😁😘👑🌻

Do you actually think Moz understands what got him to where he is now? Without Johnny Marr Andy Rouke Mike Joyce where would he be now ? I saw The Smiths all through the 80s from 83 to 87 even remember Moz saying Tim Booth from James ( when they were a 4 piece band ) had the best voicwe he'd ever heard ... Why do the best bands always mess up and get messy over money? All 4 deserved an equal pay check but Moz didn't think so !!!!

Where are Rourke, Joyce and Marr without Morrissey? I think that’s quite telling. Morrissey has had an impressive solo career. I also disagree that all band members deserved equal royalties. Marr and Morrissey wrote the songs, Morrissey did all the artwork. Marr and Morrissey were involved in the ins and outs of the band and promoting themselves. The other two influenced the sound but I think the 40,40,10,10 split was fair with all in mind. Maybe 35,35,15,15 but Marr and Morrissey deserved more imo.

@@Harry_84 there's nothing fair on a 40-40-10-10 split, specially considering that marr and morrissey already had songwriting royalties, so at that point they were stealing from the other band members when it comes to live performances or album sales. in any way, you have to remember that both joyce and rourke contributed to the sound (specially rourke adding that funk influence that always defined the band and joyce with his punk background and in general technical proficiency).
yes, morrissey and marr were the smiths, but rourke and joyce were there to support them and serve as the band's mainstay. seriously, have you listened to the smiths live, or their albums? rourke basically had to overcompensate for marr, doing intricate melodies with his bass, almost like a rhythm guitar just so marr could shine and focus on his arpeggios.
my question is, where is morrissey without the rest of the band? yes, he's had a "good" carreer up until the 2010s. but damn, just check the comments of every live performance of his and you'll see that what is morrissey now is just the shadow of what he was during the smiths (or that at least is the popular consensus).
in conclusion, god damn, they were a band, none of them deserved more or less than the other.

      -Morrissey wrote the lyrics
      -Marr wrote the music
      -Rourke wrote the bass lines
You know yourself that most songs aren’t particularly bass heavy. Morrissey’s lyrics and Marr’s jingle and jangle make the music.
Morrissey designed all of the album and 7” sleeves. He also put in a lot of effort in putting the band ‘out there’ and dealing with the record companies.
      Given what I’ve said, 35, 35, 15, 15 seems about right.
In terms of live performances, Morrissey is at his best. Look at the comments of any performance from his shows post pandemic. He’s been brilliant. His band and the sound was useless around 2017, 2018. Marr is a supporting act for average musicians like Blondie and occasionally manages to book gigs in small towns like mine (he was quite good!) and I’m not sure what Mike Joyce is up to. Quite telling regarding their talents anyway.
They were a band but it was a very similar dynamic to Oasis and the % of royalties should reflect that. Noel and Liam were Oasis as Morrissey and Marr were The Smiths. The other two were more interested in the ‘recreational’ side of being in a band…

@@Harry_84 Morrissey didn't have nor want to deal with record companies or with managing the band, that was Marr.
I really think that saying "but look where they are now" seems pretty irrelevant to the discussion and not really comparable. Morrissey is literally a solo artist as a singer, Johnny Marr started a solo career around the 2000-2010s and Joyce is a drummer, hard to be a solo artist as a drummer.
Lots of songs are quite bass heavy, that comment seems pretty weird to me lol.

@@AyelenASilva you asked where Morrissey is without the rest. He’s clearly doing quite well. He sells out everywhere and is on the top of his game. You’d expect Marr to have had a decent solo career. It’s all average really. You’d also expect Joyce to have had a place in another popular band if he was so good.
Tell you what though, it’s sad that Rourke never got the money Joyce got because he settled for £80,000 while the latter got £1,000,000.
I appreciate that his bass playing was important but I still can’t get behind the argument that the four of them should have had close to an equal share.
