  • This video is a tour of different types of sketchbooks that one artist can jump between for different purposes. Having several sketchbooks can help organize your creative process. Some sketchbooks are reserved for traveling, others are ones that are used for scribbling down notes and ideas, some sketchbooks are more curated with finished works, and more. Demo led by Art Prof Clara Lieu.

    I have 8 and I’m working my way through them. One for portraits and one handmade cotton, a tinted one, a couple of really cheap ones. And they’re all various sizes/orientations and brands and papers.

    Thank you so much for this video!!! I've really struggled with the 'Instagram perfect' sketchbook idea to the point of getting stuck/paralyzed trying to meet those assumed standards and it's so awesome and freeing to know that that's not a normal sketchbook thing!!!!!!

    I have multiple sketchbooks .. one for finished cartoon / illustration images, one for practicing techniques & forms, and another for painting composition ideas. I like thicker paper so if I want to use different medias or switch things up, I don't have to worry about any of my other work getting bleed through or ruining my progress. I'll eventually fill all of them and begin new ones. Keeping the aesthetics separate helps me stay somewhat organized with my compositions and designs. :)

    Omg Beitou!:) I love Xinbeitou, my brother's family lives in Taipei, and that's one of my little peaceful spots.
    I use lots of sketchbooks! Over time I learned I need the paper to be good for each medium. So I have one for watercolor/gouache, one for pencil, mixed media and ink, one for JUST composition thumbnails, and one for drawings that I made from the thumbnails for paintings, so 5 in total! Yes, my bag is heavy sometimes! :) All I really need now is a sketchbook to be *barf on the page* lol. I use my *fun* sketchbooks mostly at night an hour before bed, while I'm watching tv, or out and about.
    Thanks for sharing I love to see sketchbooks! Yours are fantastic!:)

    Ha, ha , "barf on the page" describes about 50% of my output. I used to make my own sketchbooks. Now I just buy them. I have a very large one that has everything in it from shopping lists to drawings for finished works. I laugh that you think the one you have there is too pretty Clara because the one I made has hand made embroidered paper as the cover, and honestly what I have put inside it is a total dog's breakfast. I did finish it though.

      That is incredible how you made your own sketchbooks! I hope to do that one day. I always struggle with pretty sketchbooks because I feel like my work won't "live up" to the quality, haha - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff

      @@artprof It's funny, but I tend to. be messier in the ones I made, even though they are way more beautiful than the ones I buy. I think it's because I just think: well, I can just make another one!

    This makes me laugh so hard… I have several I can’t keep up with what’s what… embarrassingly I have several sketchbooks with maybe three pages used the rest totally blank from years past I need to create I guess an art book where I pull those out and marry them to others not sure whether to do that or not I’ll just pick up and continue LOL… I think I just adore sketchbook so much I am drawn to all types primarily multimedia since I seem to not remember what I’m doing at any given time. Thanks so much for the video.

    I have two, actually. A sketchbook for my watercolors classes specifically where I do a lot of exercices and preparatory watercolors sketches. It's a landscape bound A5 hanhemühle with lightly toned paper in grey or ocher ; really love them, and the watercolor toned paper turned out to be my favorite place to experiment, even if I paint sometimes on white paper afterwards. Having a neutral grey or a ocher tint helps me see better the colors (it's kind of strange, but I think it's related to my visual incapacity, I have some difficulty to evaluate lightness and brightness, and having an already tinted surface helps). And my second sketchbook is bigger, it's a leuchtturm square book I carry everywhere. I do everything on here : sketches, swatches of new (or old) pens, taking notes for projets, notes from art classes (yes, even art classes from Art prof), from books about art or art history. I also glue things drawn on small pieces of paper when testing sketches on colored paper for a larger scale project, or just when testing new things. I actually like the size and sturdiness of it, because it provides me, when open, a kind of portable surface of work, especially when I draw on trains or subways, sometimes standing in a corner ^^ The spine of the book is totally wrecked, though because I usually flip the front cover under, when I sketch while standing xD

    • @artprof
      @artprof  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much for sharing! I agree with you, having a toned paper or canvas is so much easier to work on than a white one. There is just more types of contrast to interact with. I'm definitely getting a toned sketchbook next time! -Lauryn, Art Prof Teaching Artist

    Fun! You're not weird. I always cut off the bookmark and the strap. They are so annoying get in my way. I always use my journals from front to back. Picking a random page would drive me crazy. I also always date, time stamp and usually even put the actual day (friday, saturday) etc.. Now that I think about it, maybe you should not trust me when I say you're not weird... I might not be a reliable source.

    I typically about have 3 sketchbooks going at a time: a small square one for automatic drawing (this is for good hand warm ups), a strathmore mixed media one for my preferred ink/ pencil/ gouache art, and a Strathmore watercolor one for my more wet watercolor pieces. My Mixed media one is def my #1. The number of sketchbooks is driven by my need for the best paper for the job.
    All have mixtures of writing and color mixes & color mixing notes for each piece.
    I currently have a alcohol marker sketchbook, but I've found that I prefer that as a tear away pad instead but the experiment was fun. I got it to extend the life of my markers in using specific marker paper.
    I gotta say, I too hate the binded books. They are straight up ugly, IMO. Plus, I have old ones that really didn't hold up over time. They really aren't for me either.
