Japanese officers with their Katanas were particularly leery of Filipino Bolo masters, they would close in-range making the long-sword Katana useless.
The solo training at 0:15 and 2:17 make sense and show these people know how to attack and move with blades. I'm just gonna embrace being "that guy" because that disarm at 0:30 hurts my eyes and I hate the tone of the whole video. The teacher is not showing actual knowledge by bringing the blade back. If you already evade the blade (as he wisely did in 0:33) he could perfectly just "riposte" and get out, or grab the arm and then disarm before the student can do anything else. The student is just waiting while the sergeant painstakingly tries 3 times to catch his blade (0:35), just to bring the student's tip back in line to his face (0:36), and then put the student in the same position the sergeant started at (0:40). Meaning, if the student had been moving and not standing, he could have made the same disarm to the teacher at the beginning or easily disengage and trust. Perhaps he could kick my butt some other time, but certainly not with that "dissarm".
