I hope that your reel has been singing a lot this year Paddy I think that the fish was well rested and had been in the pool for couple of days I thought it was going to be a lot bigger. Cheers Iain. 🥃
it certainly fought above its weight James I think it had been waiting for a couple of days for me to come along..... it was certainly well rested and I was the lucky one that it chose to have an encounter with Cheers Iain 🥃
I never tier off the noise from my old reels Fraser I have had fish on some of my quieter reels and the fish fight as hard but it's not the same as the old J W Young noise. I will however need to add a bit of oil to them soon so that I can hear them scream Cheers Iain. 🥃
Very well done Iain, that salmon was certainly minted ha ha, and really hammered your favourite fly!! If they come you will catch them !! Cheers, one to celebrate and a fight to remember.😊
it is worth all the effort chasing these elusive silver tourists Paul ..... we catch a fish and then spend hours and hours chasing the next one Cheers Iain. 🥃
Well done. I love the sound of your reel, it reminds me of the ol' Hardy Marquis my parents gave me as a birthday present, all those years ago, that started me on my flyfishing journey. Tight lines!
Thank you Ólafur. I have an old Marquis that I have had for years . I have never used it for a long time but maybe one day I will let it sing when I go trout fishing Tight lines Cheers Iain 🥃
You played the salmon like the seasoned fisherman you are and yes, that grab was beautiful and yes unless you have experienced it for yourself it’s hard to explain how it gets your heart to thumping and why you keep going back for more. Wishing you many more , Ian.
Thank you Steve the only trouble is I have never been knighted, I would gladly have had the sword wiggle about my person but alas I am just a peasant that enjoys his fishing . I thank you for the honour that you have be stowed upon me even for this short moment in time Tight Lines Cheers Iain. 🥃
Superb fish Iain, and what a lovely piece of video. Despite the amazing account the fish gave of itself, seemed there was plenty of life left in the tanks, given the way it was straight off after you returned it! Well deserved, and really enjoyed “sharing” it with you!
It was my pleasure Peter I. couldn't keep that one to myself . I was in that much of a rush to get the fish back in the water I never checked to see where the camera was pointing but glad that I recorded enough to edit Cheers Iain. 🥃
Congratulations wonderful fish. Again patience and perseverance paid off Ian. One could feel the adrenaline pumping. Makes all the rain and hours spent in the river worth while. On to the next then!!!😅
What an adrenalin rush to get Christopher I can't wait for the next one and hope that my my body keeps up with the speed that my heart was bumping Cheers Iain 🥃
Thanks James The law of averages had to see me with a salmon landed. I just need to persevere until the next one comes. Cheers and tight lines. Iain. 🥃
Superb...well done Iain. Bonny clean fish too...well worth the effort....and a very satisfied "it's time to go home" at the end. There's a few seatrout been spotted here so I might have a couple of hours this evening into the dark. Way to go Iain....many more to come I'm sure....
Thank you Philip when we go fishing its always our aim to catch a fish in reality it can be a bit frustrating when it happens it keeps us going until the next one decides to make a move on our efforts at the vice Cheers Iain. 🥃
It's strange that once we manage to get the first fish landed John . the pressure seems to be off and we relax a bit more . although I have hooked and lost a couple and had a few sea trout the buzz of the reel screaming on several runs gets the heart bumping . Looking forward to the rest of the season. Tight Lines Cheers Iain 🥃
I have had years before when it seems like I will never land a fish Andrew when its like that we have to go try and enjoy our days out and the company of our fellow anglers. Cheers Iain. 🥃
I have caught a lot of 12lb fish and I could have sworn with the fight it had put up it was going to be around that weight ....... it gave a fight and a half for its size Cheers Iain. 🥃
the thrill of hooking a fish is something that no angler forgets George ....... Imagine being a golfer and missing something like a salmon taking a screamer down a pool . it puts a hole in one into insignificance Cheers Iain. 🥃
Yes Frankie and what a workout . If someone had asked me half way through the fight what its weight was I would have it at around 12lb. Tight lines Cheers Iain 🥃
I have been fortunate this year to have a cast on a lot of different beats Stephen. It's strange that the first trip to this same beat produced a nice wee fish. I hope that I get the chance to meet with Douglas again sometime this year and get well looked after Cheers Iain 🥃
I am in the fortunate position of having the chance to fish on the Tweed four days this week I think I may end up a bit tired come Saturday Tobby Cheers Iain. 🥃
Thanks David as you know it has been difficult year so far and hopefully it will get a bit better now that conditions are getting that bit better Tight lines and I hope that your rod is bent each trip. Cheers Iain 🥃
it is the prize we all hope for when we are full of anticipation when getting ready for our trips to the water John. When we manage to get fishing and connect into a fish our hearts pump like nothing else on earth and the adrenaline takes over . Looking forward to next trip at the river. Cheers Iain. 🥃
i have fished since i was a kid in aberdeenshire now living in australia ,fish here in qld no salmon or trout have 2 spey rods used once in new zealand i watch your vidios in awe , dreaming of maybe fishing either the don or the dee , thats a great sounding reel
Thanks Les I think that there are a lot of guys envy your life, a lot more sun , the sea fishing and sea food is great for BBQ,s you will need to try a double spey from the beach and get a hold of one of those wonderful fish Cheers iain 🥃
I have put in a lot of hours Derek The days when it's only been fishing and not catching are enjoyable with the company and location and I would not have missed it . The adrenaline rush when the reel screams is the magnet that keeps us going back Cheers Iain. 🥃
Very well done indeed Iain, great to see and hear the reel active again. That one had certainly had its weetabix lol. Bet your heart was pumping just a bit more than nomal? 👍👍🍺
I had my weetabix as well Mr Mazo. I needed it to give me the strength to land it 😉. A great adrenalin rush and a big smile for the rest of the day. Cheers Iain. 🥃
My first salmon of the year. The first two fell off. That one hit so hard I knew it was going to stay on and help put a big smile on my face . Cheers Iain. 🥃
it is a perfect setting for a day or two fishing . The beat is Middle Pavilion . it is just below where the Gala water comes into the Tweed. I have copied a link to a day that I fished there last year and this was my first visit . I am glad that I made it back Cheers Iain. 🥃 studio.ua-cam.com/users/videojIex5gtXYCI/edit
It isn't well publicised but the name of the beat is Middle Pavilion and its just below where the Galla water comes in to the Tweed I have been washed of a couple of beats myself this year . I was supposed to be fishing at West New Biggin today but the river was running at 8ft above summer level. I went up to the Tay for couple of hours instead and the river started rising so came home I suppose that's what happens when we go fishing Cheers Iain 🥃
Loved the video, I have subscribed, I noticed when the fish took the fly you let it take line from the reel, then lifted into it, is this what you normally do ? I am just really starting to do more Salmon Fly Fishing, I have fished mainly for Brown trout and Grayling, using euro nymph style, though I have caught a salmon, a grilse and several sea trout using that method, but none so far when I have been actually trying to catch them, there hasn't been a lot of salmon seen on my stretch of the River Earn this year, hopefully get some rain and fish before the season ends.. cheers
Hi Richard. sorry about the delay in getting back to you. I too started of trout fishing and sometimes I strike at the fish knowing well I should let it take line . It is very difficult not to lift the rod if you are working the fly and I have been chastised in the past for both. I look at it as some fish are hooked and caught and some are lost it all more about the day out and the excitement of the take. You will have your fair share of excitement and disappointment Tight Lines Cheers Iain. 🥃
@IainSB no worries, thanks for the reply, was out on my local stretch of River Earn at Crieff yesterday, never seen any salmon, just one sea trout spotted, River was a good height too, for a change, I have enjoyed watching your videos, funny thing about River Thurso.. my mum lived up there for 30 plus years and I never got to fish the river, did plenty of the lochs though.. cheers
I used to take a sip of water from the river until the ghillie on Ladykirk, Jimmy Baxter, informed me there were several sewage farms along the river including the one at Norham . I dodged the bullet though. I now carry a bottle.
I to used to drink water from burns and rivers when I was out Richard it wasn't until I met a few anglers and walkers that encountered a disease called Helicobacter pylori from dinking un treated water that I too now try carrying bottled water Cheers Iain. 🥃
Thanks Chris. I was using a 7 weight hardy Demon 12ft and the line was a Rio Outbound 8 weight and a 10ft hover Rio tip with about six foot of tippet and the compulsory Iain Bain Special on the fluffy end Cheers Iain. 🥃
I think that it had been resting in that pool for a couple of days Russ It was Middle Pavilion . Douglas doesn't want it shouted about Shhhh!!!! Cheers Iain 🥃
I don't know how anyone can fish with those silent drag reels Malcolm . The sound of the Paul hitting the ratchet when a fish screams down the river is hard to beat. I know a couple of guys that have that noise for their phone ring tone. I may have to add something to my phone Cheers Iain. 🥃
If a man deserved a springer it was yourself Iain, that was a pleasure to watch…. Congratulations… beautiful spring Salmon 🎣😃
Thank you Like yourself I enjoy going fishing and to get first prize now and again adds the icing to our cake. Cheers Iain. 🥃

What a fantastic encounter Iain! Splendid reel noise!!
I never tier off the noise from my old reels Fraser I have had fish on some of my quieter reels and the fish fight as hard but it's not the same as the old J W Young noise. I will however need to add a bit of oil to them soon so that I can hear them scream
