Interesting little journey I had trying to figure out why the range of this thing was so much better -- 20% more than the Model S Plaid. The answer is simple: the battery is a bit bigger (113 vs 100). Drag ratios are the same, but the improved powertrain presumably accounts for the rest. It's weird how these companies don't talk about the size of their battery packs anymore. I'm still not 100% sure how big my Tesla's battery pack is, though the internet seems relatively confident of it's size. But they treat the range as something mystical when it's mostly just a bigger battery. Props to Lucid on the motor improvements, though. From what I hear it's a pretty neat innovation.
No I remember way back when when Tesla stopped naming the models of their cars P85D 100D 75 etc. they just condensed everything into names, standard and long range. There were multiple reasons like the numbers are generally meaningless to the avg consumer (how much better is a 85kwh battery than a 75), another reason was it put a strain on the production for Tesla(especially back then-ramping up) since they were making so many models to order. And prolly the biggest reason was that they just didn’t want to show the battery numbers to ppl. Can’t recall if there was an official reason but ppl speculated back then that it was about not showing the buyer (or journalists) every piece of information-maybe to hide it from competitors as well. Doesn’t really make that much sense though when shops can deconstruct the car and just examine it.
The normal air is more efficient than the regular model s. Unlike the plaid, which is just a motor swap, the sapphire is meant to be an actual track car.
Having driven the standard Lucid Air, I can’t wait to drive this one! The normal one is already a great driving and luxurious car that is still practical! As a sedan lover, this is up there for me.
i think that traction control system on a car with that much power and weight should be the n.1 selling point, so you can stay alive while launching it.

Would love to see Lucid start creating other models at more approachable pricepoints. The styling of the Sapphire also looks great, kind of reflects 8-8.5 generation Audi, whose design language has always been very beloved in the car scene.
For $250,000 they should’ve put a carbon fiber roof on that thing to really lower weight unless they’ll have an even more ultra level for this with a light weight application including carbon fiber wheels and less sound deadening
And they sell it an insane loss, they lose 500 000$ per car currently. I really hope they're able to push the costs down because there is no way Lucid will survive like this
Love the design of the Air, would love to see one in person (other than the other direction on the highway). I personally have zero interest in any vehicle that can reach 60 in under 8 seconds. I do like that some Lucid models are a the top of the efficiency list - that’s what interests me. At $250k, cars like this will not sell enough units to have significant environmental impact, relatively speaking. But their development does move the overall state of the technology forward. This is true of not just EVs but ICE cars also. Many of the performance and safety features now included in mainstream cars where first developed in supercars. But I'm probably not saying anything you didn't know already. I have never owned a high-performance car nor do I expect I ever will, but I am glad there's a small market for them out there.
@@julianevans9548The innovation always begins at the high end. Then it trickles down to the low end. Trust me, we need a small electric sports car that's essentially a Miata but electric. Relatively practical, 2 door, pretty quick, pretty light, and a convertible!

@@realme4107 Actual track car weighing 5,500 pounds? lol
This car makes me think of what the 1994 era Chrysler LHS would look like if it was made today. Even the interior kinda has a cab forward thing going on.
This is such a lunatic take but I entirely understand it.
Terrific car, 10 out of 10.
This car is the same size as Mercedes EQE and Model S, BMW 5, etc. Amazing how much space they've created. Should come as a wagon or at least liftback, though.
Doug must have driven many EVs where even sub 2.0 second 0-60 is normal for him now. Much different from his initial Taycan/Plaid reaction.
Nobody’s going to talk about 360p cap?
yep, i’m still waiting for it to be in full resolution before i watch it
9 hours later and still only 360p
All that is fine, but why just 360p?
360p resolution im gonna break out my iphone 3g to get the full experience
By far the best car money can buy ❤❤❤ top level luxury, top level Speed, and the highest level of efficiency 🤩
This is about $249,000 above my price range.
Don't worry, Lucid can't even afford the losses they make on each vehicle they sell.
The LUCID designers have really out done themselves! This is an extremely beautiful car! I don't drive, but if I did drive and had the funds to buy the Sapphire I definitely would be purchasing one! For now I will settle for being an investor ❤❤
Why dont you drive
@@salamiwasabi21 anxiety of others on the road.
I’m stuck on 360p 😞
I like the standard roof. It means you get a more traditional front windscreen vs the one that goes over your head
Wait to you see the depreciation on this one in 3 years. Would be an amazing low mileage buy as long as Lucid survives then.
I don't think they'll survive to launch the gravity myself. But yeah in a couple year's these will be plaid type $
Or forever collectors editions? 😁
1234....that's the kind of quirk Doug will approve! I see what you did there @lucid 😅
Dream edition also have 1111 hp. 😅😅
DragTimes ran the Sapphire against the Plaid in a drag.
The Air did pull a 1.92 0-60, and a 8.99 quarter.. The Tesla was a quarter second back
You can make the argument this is the best car/sedan you can buy. One car with the technology of a Tesla, the speed and power of a supercar, the space and luxury of an S-Class, the cargo capacity of a crossover and the range of a hybrid
Super impressive with the overall design for Lucid. Very well put together and has some amazing tech. I was just blown away by the distance display on the rear camera let alone the 1200 HP lol
Absolutely stunning! A true luxury EV with great CQ compared to Tesla. Those wheels are gorgeous , very 911 inspired (if you know you know).
I thought I was the only one that noticed. They look very Turbo S esque.
This might be the best overall electric vehicle on the road. Can’t wait for their SUV to come out soon!
They loose $380k per car they sell, it would be a miracle if it sucked. Lucid will be gone in 2/3 years.
SUV's suck
@@jamesfynnhere6983that's if you bring up their factory costs. As they sell more cars. This figure goes down and eventually Into profitability. The same was once true for Tesla.
@@jamesfynnhere6983 stop spreading misinformation lol

Doug the type of guy who loves to point out the DOT requirement for auxiliary taillights when the trunk is open.
How do you solve a demand problem? Release a $250,000 car of course! Good luck, Lucid.
Great presentation Doug and one fantastic Lucid Air Sapphire EV 👏👏👏Hoping to own one someday here in the UK👌👌
The value of his vehicle should be 10 when you compare the performance of a Rimac given its price tag and other hyper cars, this value is amazing!
I hope they finally worked all the bugs on these things, because they are sweet cars.
They haven't and the company is going out of business.
Doug is the kind of guy to announce, “In fact, it’s MY Lucid Air Sapphire, to go along with my old school crazy Lamborghini….. “
Crazy how this car has more room for storage than a Yukon/Tahoe/Escalade.
I’ve valeted a couple of the regular Lucid Airs and always thought the nearly vertical rear sunshade was interesting, compared to other sedans where it follows the angle of the rear window
When I saw "Sapphire" in the title I thought it might be a Sierra Cosworth. Doug are you ever going to review any of the oldschool Ford Cosworths?
He'd have to fly overseas.
Such incredible fantastic Tech!
I am still driving my Air GT in smooth mode. I cannot imagine using anymore power.
Okay, in a perfect universe, there would be a Lucid Air WAGON 😍 Now this is a new car that I like. Very classy looks!
I'd be very interested to see how it does in a nice cold winter climate and the change in performance. To see if it could be as bad as the lightning.
I've had multiple ev. Once the battery warms up, in about 5 min it's back to normal. But in the beginning you feel a huge difference.
Wow, that is a really good looking car. I'm not a big EV fan, but I really like that. Incredible numbers as well.
Doug is a kinda guy who, if he were a professor, would have graded his own answer key 75/100
Designers must be fan of old lincolns with that rear light bar.
Nice colour scheme. If they would settle with frameless door windows, it would be awesome.
I personally don't mind frameless doors. They suit the car very well.
Interior/exterior design looks so much better than a Tesla
Ahh can’t wait to buy one of these in a couple years for 1/4 the price
I found it funny when Doug said smooth mode "ONLY" give you 800 HP 😂
This car is so beautiful. The range is nice, too. My ideal electric sedan.
Should have called it the Lucid Bear.
Most underrated comment of the year.
that bear on the fender with three legs bothers me
Who cares about yr oinion🤭
@@calokraine5901 Did you mean to write Onion? Because as someone who cares about onions I am deeply offended.
I have three legs too.
Would love to see Lucid start creating other models at more approachable pricepoints. The styling of the Sapphire also looks great, kind of reflects 8-8.5 generation Audi, whose design language has always been very beloved in the car scene.
THANK YOU! ❤🙋♂️DOUG I APPRECIATE YOUR ALL YOUR HARD WORK ON THE LUCID SAPPHIRE AN AMAZING JOB DETAILING EVERY LITTLE THING ON THE SAPPHIRE 😉👍
For $250,000 they should’ve put a carbon fiber roof on that thing to really lower weight unless they’ll have an even more ultra level for this with a light weight application including carbon fiber wheels and less sound deadening
am I the only one with 360p maximum video quality?
Same here
Lucid, a proud Californian vehicle and company yet registered in Arizona because they can’t stand California.
Why do you feel the need to lie?
Regardless of all the tech, luxury, power and all the bells and whistles, this is a gorgeous car.
And they sell it an insane loss, they lose 500 000$ per car currently. I really hope they're able to push the costs down because there is no way Lucid will survive like this
is anyone else’s quality only go up to 360p?
Yeah it’s not going any higher than that, he must’ve exported and uploaded it in the wrong quality
I do not see the $250k ANYWHERE on this car.
I see about 80k top
@@BestOfTate23 Especially with a black leather interior, any car with a black leather interior instantly loses a couple thousands in my opinion.
Love the design of the Air, would love to see one in person (other than the other direction on the highway). I personally have zero interest in any vehicle that can reach 60 in under 8 seconds.
I do like that some Lucid models are a the top of the efficiency list - that’s what interests me. Hopefully they’ll survive and introduce more models at lower price points - that remain in the EPA’s top ten most efficient.
@steven.I.patterson. There's a new entry level model set to be released here in Australia early next year that I saw being advertised a couple days ago - I really like the Lucid Air, so clicked and took a closer look...very nice, but unfortunately with our luxury car taxes here, it's still A$140k. Cheers!
I think this is one of the two electric cars i actually like, the other one is the new Rolls Royce.
I only watch Doug and MKbhd for my reviews. Thanks for being one of the best Doug!
Make it a wagon and you might get a 75+ Dougscore 😳
Oooh, a wagon would be niiiiice
@@volvo09 YES! Electric wagons would be SICK! Especially with the 1200 horsepower of this beast.
The future of EVs looks good. In 20 years mid-range EVs will have this kind of performance.
20 years ago, 300 hp was a big deal. Now, every base model family car has that.
Big batteries = bad for environment.
Heavy car = bad for environment.
We need medium-sized electric cars with small batteries and a decent range. Not this pointless garbage.
All that power is only good for boasting to your idiot friends.
And then buy yourself a sports car. A petrol one.
Na, the government will crack down on freedoms and do heavy taxes on HP and possibly even top speeds.... expect the average car eventually to be around 300hp, 400 at best.
@@fortheloveofnoise The government can't even tie their shoes right. Let's be real, our country's time is almost up anyways.
Test drove a Lucid Air recently -- not the Sapphire but the Air Touring. Loved it. Nice, smooth and power. Imagine what would be like to ride in the Sapphire with more than 1200 horsepower :)
Lucid is the most beautiful car, & it is so tasteful in how it doesn't SCREAM it is expensive (and worth it).
The problem is the car is overpriced. Not even rich people want it. Lucid is in big trouble because they copied Tesla road to success. The problem is that bridge is burned.
Watch the Savagegeese review. They do a great interview with the company
$250,000 and the roof is aluminum and not carbon fiber 😂
