The Light Service Support Vehicle (LSSV) produced by GM Defense is the continuation of the CUCV II line of militarized commercial vehicles. Production of the CUCV II ended in 2000. Initially, further military development and sales efforts for this class of vehicles was known as CUCV III, then changed to LSSV for the 2001 model year. In April 2005 the sales and marketing program was contracted to AM General LLC, a unit of MacAndrews and Forbes Holdings. About 2,000 LSSV units were sold to U.S. and international military and law enforcement organizations.
The LSSV utilizes the 1500 Tahoe and 2500 Suburban while the LSSV pickup models are based on the Chevrolet 2500HD 1-ton chassis, also used for the ambulance.
LSSVs are intended to perform "background" roles, providing support for frontline forces, such as cargo transport, troop transport, first aid, and communications. LSSVs are not built for direct frontline combat use, as evident by their lack of bulletproofing and protection from ordnance.
