A comment mentioned something similar, but this gives me the vibes of a time where Cirno has matured, grown older, and honed her power. In this time, she is acting as the last line of defense against a threat to Gensokyo beyond anything it has yet to experience.

In KKHTA she was fighting to survive with what's pretty much all of her power and dies just to take down, Luna Child it was? while in the other one she pretty much has matured and grown, in a world filled with horrific beasts, but manages to survive, achieves her true power and pretty much becomes one of Gensokyo's last stands alongside Rumia EX, but at the end she's scarred, that's not the baka we all know all love, it's just a husk of her former self

Sounds kinda similar to Sans’s boss fight. A joke character normally not meant to be taken seriously ends up having to take action as the last line of defense when the world is pushed to the brink by an existential threat.

I didn't really want to comment, but the swell at the end convinced me to go through.
The combo of the music and the art doesn't so much give me a tone of depression on Cirno, not entirely. But it does lead me to the scenario where Cirno is in fact the last line against a threat that can actually disrupt the very balance of Gensokyo itself, and the start signifies the exhaustion of endless struggle with the swelling at the end signifying her second wind and subsequently her sacrifice thanks to the clip used.
But you know, that's just a take from someone who's imagination tends to lean more on storytelling.
Cirno, eternal martyr and saviour of Gensokyo.
Having just started listening to the song, this sort of context already fits so well

Reminds me of the fanfic "9 Souls", where Reimu turned insane and Cirno was the literal last hope to save Gensokyo. Had a good premise, but sucks that the author ruined it by forcing NSFW into the story.

I see the visual novel in front of me.
You've been having interactions with Cirno throughout the entire game so far and she has always been her usual cheery self: "I'm the strongest fairy in the world!" and "Nobody can beat me! Hahahaa!", but an extremely seasoned player would know something has always been off. She has never "truly" expressed herself yet. Then everything seems to be going well, with everyone really. Then over the course of a few scenes, some weirder stuff seems to be going on, where people have less to say. Cirno in particular seems to be having fewer cheerful expressions lately.
Cirno is missing one day, but you hear she has a cold and she returns the next day. A seasoned visual novel player would know exactly what this means to be honest. The next day she is especially cheerful, but in a way that's slightly off. You part with Cirno that day without hanging out too much, but the MC doesn't think much of it.
The next day, Cirno isn't there either. However, this time she doesn't return the next day either. You think to yourself "Man, we should've really gone to visit her like 2 days ago but okay MC you do you...". Then after several days of her absence you FINALLY visit her.
As the player of such a VN your heart starts sinking deeper and deeper as the MC makes his way over to Cirno. You don't know if she has... well ended it I guess. The MC finally noticed something is very very wrong. Reflecting on all your previous interactions with Cirno and actions in the story, you make your way over to Cirno's residence.
When you arrive... She is alive, but her eyes are red from crying. The dumbass MC doesn't know what to say to her, but after he accidentally says something particularly upsetting (which he immediately regrets) she finally breaks down. This music has been playing the entire time. During the breakdown scene the larger instrumental part (that one 2:00) swells up the emotion more and more. She confesses her love, and subsequent doubts, depression, as well as her creeping desire to stop living after you've dated another girl.
You are presented with two options:
1. Apologize and comfort Cirno and stay with her today
2. Proclaim your love for Cirno right there, betraying your other love interest
Faced with this difficult choice, you don't know what to do.
Tragically, by this point fate has been sealed. By choosing to interact with Cirno a bunch of times throughout the story, she has been slowly falling in love with you and cannot bear to live without you anymore.
By choosing option 1 you effectively throw her into a deeper spiral that will quickly end up consuming her completely and ends with her taking her life. This comes as a total shock to everyone including the MC, who falls into a depression spiral of his own and dooms his love with the other love interest.
Option 2 isn't much better. Your other love interest becomes furious and depressed. Depending on who this love interest is, she might end up taking her own life, yours, Cirno's or any combination of the three.
if you survive this revenge alone, you become so depressed you end up ending it all yourself. If Cirno alone survives this, you can be pretty sure what happens. If both you and Cirno survive this, you both have to live with the knowledge that the relationship between you two ended up costing someone their life. This ends in a nasty breakup with this music as well, that ends in more depression spirals and death.
By becoming Cirno's love interest over the course of the game, but ignoring her advances and choosing other girl as your love interest, you have most effectively created the worst ending for everyone. With the realization that you should have chosen Cirno from the start, you restart the game and take a different route with a heavy heart.
Did I just spend a good 15 minutes writing a totally insane scenario for a non-existent visual novel? Yes.

If Cirno dies it will probably not be epic, it'll just be her straying too far from her nature as an ice fairy, and because fairies are a representation of aspects of nature, just like how youkai are representations of fear, and gods of faith, she'll be able to die. So if Cirno ever dies it will probably be from her getting too big for her own good. Or because somehow all ice is gone but there is a lot of ice in the world, even more outside of Earth, and fairies have been shown to exist in places that are not Earth, so she'll only die at the literal end of the world or straying too far.

For those who don't know, fairies, especially those who can be considered powerful (Cirno is still stronger than the average fairy), are conceptually immortal, for as long as the concept of ice/cold exists, Cirno will exist. We've all seen the vengefulness of the likes of Mokou, and the inherent cruelty of immortality. Like it or not, if you piss off a fairy, it'll haunt you for a lifetime.
