The fact that this is 2 of 3 parts of 1 game out of the franchise! I don't think I have the time or patience to play these, but god bless the lore dump team for delivering the goods
Not just the acting budget, the music, the research, this series is Sega's game of thrones, except so far without the disappointing ending that ruins the entire series
For the point the game is trying to make about the money, I think there is a detail that gives it a subtle message. This game doesn't just take place during the bubble economy, it takes place in december 1988, the last month of the bubble economy. All those characters are blinded by, and chasing after a huge pile of money that is going to be worth *NOTHING* by the end of the month.
As someone that fought for chase to tell some of the sub-stories, yes, it doesnt match the main story. But it makes the world more real, even if some of the stuff is insane. In Mafia movies, or other some such, its easy to just fall into thinking the world revolves around Scarface, or The Godfather, or others. But there is still a world outside of the underworld, and the sub-stories, even in wackiness, help remind us there are just normal people out there trying to achieve their dreams and be happy.
I personally think that, while sometimes the things a character we're supposed to sympathize with has done stretch credulity, Yakuza as a series has always been about highlighting the humanity of criminals, that in the world of crime people will do horrible, unspeakable things, but are ultimately still *people* , and deserve to be treated as such, even if they don't necessarily deserve forgiveness, and thats why its so hard to find a character to root for who hasn't done something horrible, because thats what this world forces you to do, and they're still people who can be sympathized with. There's a great video on youtube that unfortunately has spoilers for later games and so cannot be watched till this lore dump series is over, called crime and humanity in Yakuza, which was made by someone who's father went to jail when they were a child, and as a result he spent a lot of his childhood interacting with and getting to personally know a lot of criminals, and how he really appreciated how human the games made them. Anyways I hope Chase has enough time to mention the cult substory, even though I'm pretty sure we're just gonna focus on the main story for the next part
2:21 Don't worry, Monty. I recently played through 0-2 and I can't for the life of me remember most of the cast's names. Edit: I AM HERE FOR MONTY GOING INSANE OVER THE CABARET CLUB AND ALL THE SIDE CONTENT. Chase wasn't joking though, that club management is one of the best parts of 0 and could be sold as its own small stand alone game.
Going from the Cabaret Club in 0 and 2 Kiwami to 3 is like getting hit by a bus, the one in 3 IS SOOOOOO BAD, I'm so glad they improved it. IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE CATCHY MUSIC FEVER TIME MUSIC IS THE BEST.
1:04:00 Kiryu would never give Tachibana up for at least 2 reasons. 1 it's not in his nature to abandon people he's decided to protect and 2 his adoptive father wants to help him. Betraying Tachibana would be like betraying him.
the bed of styx would have been an old WW2 torpedo loading bay, that's what the elevator was for. people almost definatly know it's there, they just don't talk about it
just checked the comments to make sure no one pointed this out, but the three of you have disappointed me deeply. "I don't get why the rival cabaret clubs are named after planets and one is randomly called Moon-- and why Moon is the most powerful" FIGHTING EVIL BY MOONLIGHT. WINNING LOVE BY DAYLIGHT. NEVER RUNNING FROM A REAL FIGHT. SHE IS THE ONE NAMED SAILOR MOOOON. Y'all lack C U L T U R E. Even Batman clocked Martian Manhunter's secret identity as a Japanese school girl named Rei Hino as being based on Sailor Mars. Bruce Wayne canonically has read/watched sailor moon enough to know what Sailor Mars' civilian identity is. A man of true culture right there. (Oh and if anyone doubts this connection, the colors the main gals wear all corelate with whatever sailor senshi the club takes its name from. And there are definitely similarities in personalities or hobbies from each senshi to the main girl from the corresponding club.)
I have a feeling that we aren't going to get through all the games. This is the first time I've seen Monty this put out by a game and Neil being all over the place with how he feels about it. Though, I do find it interesting that we have this gradient of perspectives when it relates to this game, I've been gettin a lot more bad vibes than good from the listening duo. (I will put in my two cents, that I find it strange that people would think certain "material" shouldn't exist in games or stories for that matter because they disagree with it on a moral level. I tend to advocate for letting stories tell it how it needs to be told and sometimes that requires context, sometimes it requires bad people to be vile, and sometimes for good people to have flaws/weakness or even find out that they aren't as good as we thought they were. Not discounting preference, as everyone has their own likes or dislikes, but I've think I've heard Monty comment multiple times in the last video and this one for why certain things even exist in the game, how our protagonists are the way that they are, and even leave when he didn't want to listen to it. Edit: A little curious though since there is some equally bad things or even worse in some cases in the Metal Gear series.)
So I just have to say, this channel is everything I've been looking for. It's entertaining, informative, and helps me get thru the day. I know u weren't expecting to have this game (series) to be so expansive, but stick with it, and make your breaks when you can. This series is worth it.
*Monty and Neil sit down to go over the lore of a game where every character is a criminal* *Characters do criminal things* *Monty and Neil Surprise Pikachu face*
I was genuinely shocked how much fun I had with Majima's cabaret club. Surprisingly in-depth when it comes to min-maxing how your girls are dressed, and which combination of girls to use. Blows Kiryu's real estate out of the water.
@@qrowing I think I fully beat the storyline for the cabaret club before I even touched Kiryu's stuff beyond what was necessary for the story. I only knew about the last style because I was committed to the club.
These episodes are an exercise in madness for Monty and Neil it’s amazing to listen to 😂keep up the good work Chase 😂 Love the show and Thank you all so much for dedication lol😂
I love when people think "I doubt I have the stamina for this entire series but I'll try it anyways", I went in fully confident I would be able to survive all the way through but I'm 6 games in out of the, like, 11 and it's breaking me. Please, Lore Dump, keep giving me Yakuza audio to grind to while I play Yakuza
2 years ago i did 0-6 plus judgement in that year. i literally had a mental breakdown when i started like a dragon. then lost judgement, the edo period remake and inifinite wealth came out and i just had to stop. im half way through lost judgement and a 3rd through like a dragon. i havent touch them since last yr.
18:20 You know, that gives me an interesting gimmick idea for future Yakuza lore dumps. Since the side content is self-paced, you could have two summaries- main plot and side content- and let the other two choose when they feel like switching to the side content and back.
Timing! I just finished my yakuza 0 yesterday, I cried. :'D Then jumping from 0 to 6 was something (I have played 3-5 before). Love you not just quickly going over these plots. 😊 Lore dumb is comfort videos! And thank you for mentioning potray of chinese is awkward in yakuza games! I have been thinking that.. :'D Also, Tachibana's done dirty, he's badass and soft guitar playing as he saves Kiryu, freaking rescue romance, it's great 😃👍
Thanks to Chase I have bought and started Yakuza 0 and am just past the first iconic, “That’s rad!” But I’m gonna keep going anyway, spoilers be damned! Thank you Monty and friends for bringing us such hilarious and serious videos telling our favourite stories, and I can’t wait for more Yakuza shenanigans! I just adore how Chase narrates things, it really puts you right in the middle of all the action beautifully!
Normally, it takes me, at most, about 2 days to go through one of these videos. Sometimes I'll do one sitting, sometimes 2. And it's taken me a week to get about 2/3s through this one. And, I want to make it very clear that I do not blame any of you guys for this. My issue is purely with the game. I've been told for ages that I should try Yakuza. I have friends who love it. And listening to this? I think I hate it. It feels like it absolutely cannot maintain a tone. I've nothing against shifting tones. The tonal whiplash of Lisa: The Painful is a big part of what makes it one of my favourite stories in gaming. But that was a clever way of causing shocking emotional moments, and sudden tension releases. This just feels like a mess of clashing styles that actively doesn't want to focus. It raises these mysteries that I'm interested in, and then goes "And then your character acts like they give precisely zero shits about this to go do random other crap." and so I internally, subconsciously, go "Oh, I guess I shouldn't care either." And people say these side parts are important aspect of the story? When you go to Gold Saucer to play minigames for a couple hours in the original FF7, it's treated as something unimportant to the story to the degree of being non-canon. When you do minigames in Yakuza, they take the effort to include a ton of characters and cutscenes and it just eats into any sense of tension. It makes it feel like Kiryu has all the time in the world, and values the lives of the people who allegedly cares about as much as he cares about toy cars and karaoke. Or sometimes the story just feels like following something else entirely. Maybe this is less of a problem in the other games, but reaching an important plot point then hard cutting to the other playable character, where we barely, if at all, interact with the story I was trying to enjoy, kills my connection to it. The whole story feels like I've got 10 video tabs open, some of them are comedy shorts, some of them are deep dives into serious books, one of them's the news, and I'm randomly switching from one to another. And when the story starts metaphorically doing that, I start literally doing that. I start going "Oh, this feels like an entirely different video to the one I was enjoying. I'm gonna go find something else that's like what I thought I was trying to watch. The story I was listening to apparently ended halfway through." Again, this is nothing against you guys, you're great. I just don't like the material, and with how much I hear people saying they LOVE this franchise, I'm curious if there's something I just don't get? Does anyone else feel the same way as me?
I legit don't remember why the bat tattoo was significant before we found out about what happened to Makoto. I remember it being brought up in Part 1 as important, but not the context.
The greatest and dumbest thing about this franchise is that there is a super serious, compelling noir crime drama coursing through the veins of every single game..... But it is buried beneath twenty tons of absolute ridiculous bullshit lol. It's dumb and beautiful and I love it, but I also get how many would find it extremely trying haha.
every time we cut away from majima i just kind of get annoyed tbh because that's the side of the story i am enjoying because the "main" story (i'm sure they will come together brilliantly at some point) is just nowhere near as interesting. (which i'm sure is the game's fault, not Chase's)
Hello from Canada 🇨🇦 I’ve been enjoying your content I hope to see more video game lore . I hope to see you do GTA 4 and 5/online ,mass effect and LA Noir .

I love all the content RGG packs into these games, but it does feel like a distraction from the plot, with the thematic juxtaposition, not to mention the ludonarrative dissonance (of which a great many open-world games are guilty) of setting up an imperative, seemingly time-sensitive goal only to let the player take 60+ hours to actually achieve it. Shit's still fun af, though.
15:53 It is certainly a bit of a critique I have of this game... that it brings up such HORRIBLE past for Makoto's character. And then one of the perpetrators is kinda just... not *quite* given what they deserve. I felt like the game just kinda hand-waved that one away in favour of a misguided, last-dying-breath-redemptive moment
The fact that this is 2 of 3 parts of 1 game out of the franchise! I don't think I have the time or patience to play these, but god bless the lore dump team for delivering the goods
Monty: what is the acting budget in this game
All the fans: YES
Not just the acting budget, the music, the research, this series is Sega's game of thrones, except so far without the disappointing ending that ruins the entire series
For the point the game is trying to make about the money, I think there is a detail that gives it a subtle message.

We are with you all the way Monty...Good luck surviving.

Too be fair Neil had many complaints during the MGS lore dump
nishitani refers to majima as kun because as the head of his own family his majima's superior in the yakuza
1:19:33 in this part Monty and Neil finally understand why the side content is necessary lol
So I just have to say, this channel is everything I've been looking for. It's entertaining, informative, and helps me get thru the day. I know u weren't expecting to have this game (series) to be so expansive, but stick with it, and make your breaks when you can. This series is worth it.

The Hostess minigame was great. Before I learned it was connected to anything I willingly did everything it had to offer and maximized all the girls.

1:35:00 wish Chase could have brought up the awesome tag team heat actions you can do here when fighting alongside Oda and Tachibana.
These episodes are an exercise in madness for Monty and Neil it’s amazing to listen to 😂keep up the good work Chase 😂 Love the show and Thank you all so much for dedication lol😂
Yay more Lore Dump! Thanks for making Monday better guys.

I'm a big fan of the series, I'm so happy you guys are going through this. Also, the longer the podcast episodes, the better!
Who more of this amazing series. So hyped.Monty’s 1 second away from retirement vibe is great
I am so happy that Monty has joined the ranks of the Kuze Stans in wanting him to return in yakuza 9:yaKUZE.
This was a Rollercoaster of an episode and I loved every second. The dynamic the three have together is amazing. Can't wait for more.
18:20 You know, that gives me an interesting gimmick idea for future Yakuza lore dumps. Since the side content is self-paced, you could have two summaries- main plot and side content- and let the other two choose when they feel like switching to the side content and back.
When the 5 stars were introduced, all I could think of was Sailor Moon.
yup that's the joke, majima's the tudexo mask and yuki's sailor galaxy apparently
All I could think of was the Gorosei from One Piece.
@@Mike_Dubo if oda gives them magical girl transformations then i'm say you called it ;)
HUH? THE MIDDLE? IF THIS IS THE MIDDLE? HOW LONG IS THE END? HOLY CRAP.

2:10:58 uh...no he isn't?
He sera uses a close ranged methodical open hand fighting style.
He doesn't use guns in his boss fight...
yup, sera never uses the gun, he's just holding one in the fmv
The only lethal gun is a cutscene gun

the story in these games is so serious, you need the silly side quests/minigames, it's just too bleak without it
All the money jokes aside, I assume that the youtube premium guys give some money ;)
I find it kinda funny that Monty and Neil latched onto another character named Lea 😂
