The Joni Mitchell staff loved the arrangement and they are releasing my TAB/notation on the official Joni Mitchell website! (for free!) This made my day!! :) Also, I did a free lesson on this arrangement on my other UA-cam channel! Links to the TAB and lesson in the description of this video.. Thank you all so much for the kind words!
Emil, do you have a recording of that song that you posted on your Instagram feed where you were playing the guitar and your wife was singing.i thought that was a terrific and soul-touching performance. Please, the world needs that to be a recorded track, or at least a complete version.🙏 Your playing, with her voice ...gives me chills everytime I watch it.
Well, I've struggled, laboured, cried, and laughed on acoustic guitar for over 30 years. I've heard player after player, instrumental, and song. And, just when you think you've heard it all, along comes such a beautiful, beautifully played arrangement. Fantastic.
Emil is on a different level. His arrangements are the best I have ever heard. When a composition brings you to tears, you know there is something special going on. One day I will travel to see him.
Wow. I’ve been playing 22 years and listening to the few great acoustic players, and rarely have ever felt tears when someone plays. This is something special. What talent.
Wow. Please, please, please do more covers like this. Some of your YT shorts need to be full video versions. They are very beautiful. I would just listen to a playlist of you doing covers all day. You have an amazing gift, man.
I hope that Joni hears this. The sensitivity that you approach your arrangements with gives new life to the music that is a compliment to the original writer and a treat for the listener. Thank you for sharing your magnificent talent with us!
Emil, I am trying to think of words to do your playing justice, But I cannot describe what I just heard. Wow my friend.... That was one of the most emotional, moving, songs I've heard anyone play. Again, WOW!
Well! I have listened to Tom Emmanuel alot in my life. And struggled to find anyone who "felt" their music like he does. Then I bump into you Emil. Mate. What a blessing to have found you. Congrats on your ability. Alot of hard work. Beauitful.
I remember back in 1985 when I recorded with my walkman, Tommy Emmanuel doing a pub gig in Sydney and playing Chet's "dropped D" version of Over the Rainbow and thinking WOW! Then a few years later he arranged his own version in C that sounded completely different. He definitely pushed the envelope much further with that tune. And likewise here, I've only ever known Chet's version of "Both Sides Now", which is nice and boppy, but this version.... WOW. It's definitely pushed the envelope further. I've posted this thought before in another video of Emil's, in that you can easily sound good playing fast. But demonstrating your virtuosity through all the nuances required in a slow song, that takes talent and genius. This arrangement is just heart stopping and a real tear jerker. Which is what can happen with a simple tune, if it's been arranged and played by a world class virtuoso.
What a gorgeous arrangement! I love those chords around the 1:00 and 2:20 minute marks. I've lost track of the number of times I've played this tune. Thanks, Emil.
I have been playing Classica Guitar for 40 years and love POP music arrangements, BOTH SIDES NOW has been arranged for SOLO Guitar by so many, This one is the most that catches by 'classical guitar mindedness'. Thanks for the free sheet music Emil, what makes hard to play this easy, intermidiate level of difficulty is playing those 'harmonics'.
Wow! What a beautiful arrangement! This reminds me of someone I hold dear to my heart. Carmela, if somehow you’re reading this, you don’t know how much you mean to me. I wish you nothing but love and happiness.
I played an arrangement of “Both Sides Now” on classical guitar about 41 years ago in my Senior Recital to finish my music degree in college. Whew - Emil, your version is by far the most beautiful I’ve heard. From a player’s perspective, I appreciate it/your skill very much!
Beautiful arrangement and a flawless performance. The opening with the gorgeous harp harmonics is amazing, but honestly my favorite part was when you fell into the sweet groove in the second verse. Overall a wonderful rendition of a classic song!
Honestly the best version of that song ever, just beautiful, you conveyed the emotion of that song perfectly. That can make a grown man cry! What a talent!
Oh, I made that request! Not that I think that made you pull the plug.. As always I'm floored by your playing Emil. It's a song that I absolutely love, but haven't heard someone master it yet. But you did. Takk Emil
Dear Emil! I have seen your videos for the past few years and they are so wonderful! Yes, you’ ve got the tecnique but so have a lot of other players I see and hear. But you, in ever pay tone, strum, pick of a note, you create such magic, feeling, musicality, brings me so much joy, pain, feelings, emotion when you play. I am 59 years old, have played the guitar since I was eleven. I wish I just once could hit a string and reach out to someone the way that you always do. Really beautiful arrangement of that lovely song!💜
Oh Man Emil, you really nailed this one. It was like listening to Joni without the words, especially her later version when she dropped her vocal register. The tone, the feeling, the cadence - everything was just perfect. She is such an iconic voice and to capture it the way you have is nothing short of miraculous. And those cascading harmonics? Tommy Emmanuel - eat your heart out, you met your match!
I read Emil's bio recently. Funny you should mention Tommy because the bio says that Emil was first inspired to learn that method (finger style?) when he heard Tommy Emmanuel.
@@mediamannaman Emil has been a sort of "protegé" of Tommy's for a while. The "wonder from Down Under" is very good at helping others. The method is generally known as finger style, but Tommy calls it the "boom chick" because of the sound the alternating bass makes when you slightly palm mute the the strings. Those harmonics are fiendishly difficult to play and Emil is as close to Tommy as anyone I've ever heard. Many of us, me included, have been inspired by Tommy but very few (certainly not me) get even close to his capability.
Fantastic. Always loved this song and even play it in my own rudimentary way 😆 I notice some are baffled by your talent which I'm sure you have...in abundance. However I'm thinking of all the practice you must have put in to get this good. To me that shows dedication, stamina and willpower. I'm sure you have sacrificed many "fun" things on the altar of guitar practicing. My hat off to you sir for all that and for bringing us this and other wonderful pieces of music. We sure need that in today's world 😃👏❤️
Finally someone who understands talent is an illusion. Only everyday discipline and countless practice hours can bring players to this level. Congrats Emil for that you're a great exemple for a lot of us
Beautiful - I sure wish you had tabbed it out on your site for us mortals to give it a whirl. I've played the version by Randy Scruggs for years but your arrangement is the best!

Way to go, Emil! Well deserved, my friend.
Please put your covers also on Spotify, that would make MY day!
I’m an old cripple man and your music moves me to tears every time. Thank you young man.
What a Beautiful Rendition of a Beautiful Song. Bravo!!! 👏👏👏
He Makes Music
~
He makes music
With hands that sing
He sounds the words
With wordless strings
A song of long ago
He sculpts its beauty
It’s bitter-sweet feel
He makes music
With emotions and longing
As he plays with shades
As he sketches and paints
Upon the frets and strings
He makes music.
