Aesop rock is severely underrated. I prefer his earlier music because I preferred the beat choices, but I reckon he’s a top 5 greatest of all time candidate. I’d put his best and most thought provoking lines against any rapper from any time period.
His voice has gotten better overtime though, and the production on his newer albums still smack

He does but man you can’t look at RTJ and not think he’s 50 percent. I actually enjoy El more with Mike. They are a package at this point to me because they are better together than separate. Aesop to me feels like he carved his own lane he never would or cares to be in a convo other than who raps the weirdest and does it the best. El and Aes both are on the outskirts but overtime really aren’t they have huge followings and they don’t probably care to cross beyond that. I mean they are alternative hip hop that is beyond underground and below pop superstar yet their name will always come up in a convo. These dudes won’t be Em, but they are exactly the level of respect Em wanted so in that sense they are on the same field for wordplay and the art of rap AND Em still gets to be in that field too despite his level of fame.

Whether it's intentional or not, there's almost always several layers of meaning underneath Aes' lyrics on his 'really hard to understand on the first listen' songs. Dude says the most mundane things in the most beautiful ways sometimes, and sometimes he just goes wild and you think "WhT the fCK did I just hear?"
