    The idea of a nuclear reactor lazily bouncing around a drydock in its balloon carapace with drones and workers trying to stabilize it, with the only concern being the timetable, makes for an amusing mental image.

    7:39. The image and the ship name "Toy Box" are from the anime series Planetes. In that series the team is doing exactly what was mentioned in the video, collecting junk in orbit.

    LOVED that you featured the petition to save the New Horizons spacecraft at the end of this video !
    It was a no-brainer to me and all of you that it's ridiculous to shut off an asset that is still working admirably, cost so much, took so long to build and get to where it is !... And yet... it was on the chopping block... so what does that say about the powers-that-be ?
    But to all of you who DID participate in it's reprieve BRAVO ! WELL DONE ! And you've done the entire scientific world a great service !

      In much the same spirit, I wonder how soon we will stop dropping dead satellites (and soon, the ISS) into the Pacific, and start boosting them into junkyard orbits to await the day when they will be salvaged?

    Can anyone explain why spaceships can’t be huge spheres of water. Ok acceleration of the spheres would be a challenge but they solve so many other problems. We could heat the sphere a bit to keep it mostly water, but even if it froze it wouldn’t be the worst thing. Could live in a “submarine” in the sphere where no dangerous radiation can penetrate. The water would take all particle collisions easily. Water is drinkable and recycled. Water can be used as fuel. Basically a lot of upsides and a couple of downsides.

      That’s interesting to think about, like a big nuclear reactor in the middle, there’s like this massive thick layer of ice above a bubble of water that protects you, water is readily available, if the ice hull does get penetrated, the water will just freeze up instantly where the hole was, plus you could have like some kinda places that are connected to the outside so like you could just have a door with a bunch of drones to collect hydrogen and oxygen and just have some kinda h2o thing. I think the biggest issue would be the price lol

      One of the “hard” Sci fi series I read a while back used an adaptation of this method, the idea of having water be the bulk of the ship’s radiation shielding built into certain walls and the like.

    An orbital assembly complex of a type 2 civilization would be a great setting for a human-scale story with all the flavour of high sci-fi.

      If ur talkin K2 then absolutely not. Would make a terrible human-centric story if there were even any humans left by that point. By then everything is gunna be automated, post-biological, or at least off-baseline. K2 is FAR in the future.

      @@virutech32Depends on the amount of verisimilitude you want to adhere to. K2 would be almost inscrutable to us, even conceptualizing K1 would be hard from our standpoint.

      isnt the idea of a "space ship" itself a non-starter? Space travel will probably be a COMPLETELY different experience from what we can comprehend in our very limited and biased 21st century "seafaring" tradition ....

      @@virutech32 Not if the conflict is man vs man as opposed to man vs struggle or man vs machine. Theres lots of different types of conflicts thats still viable

    One thing I like to consider regarding the mass production of spaceships and the culture associated to it, is the parallel between the people who will be doing that in near future (when the "Baby Steps Age" of occupying Solar System properly starts) and the people who will be doing that in a little more distant future, at the fringes of Solar System. When proper Galaxy Colonizing Age starts.
    There is a third layer of that too, of course. The culture at the borders of our Galaxy, who will be living in an around the shipyard factories responsible for building the Ships that will cross the space between galaxies. Taking humanity to other galaxies.
    This 3 Shipyard Societies will be very different from each other, but perhaps they will have common elements. And recognise each other as similar sub-cultures, with the same core ideals.
    I don't know how far away in time those 3 Ages of Humanity will be. However, if we postulate that humanity will remain biologically one and the same (possibly by design, and legal imposition grounded in fanatic specist dogma) then those 3 stages can still look and feel very familiar to each other. And to us, as well.
    If we assume biological immortality predates Baby Steps Age, then we could get ourselves a character narrator with the privileged perspective of having lived the 2 previous Shipyard Civilizations fully, when Shipyard Society 3 starts to take shape.
    Could even be someone who happens to be alive today. As a toddler, probably.

    Wow I can't believe you mentioned exosquad. Those were some of the most detailed toys of that era, and the show really was pretty good, I place it right up there under Captain Power and just above Skeleton Warriors, all gems

    Great episode, and may New Horizons continue to reach those new horizons long after those who wanted to shut it down are gone.
    I always remember in Exo Squad thinking that the fleet's Jupiter base and construction was mainly fueled with materials from ships that had been disabled (both Exo Fleet and Pirate) in the battles that happened earlier. Like you mention, easier to collect "space junk" and scrapped hulks than mining and refining materials from asteroids, especially at first. (Now I feel a need to go re-watch the series.)
    And I passed the spintronics stuff along to a couple of relatives who have several teacher friends they already informed me they were sharing the information with, so maybe before too long it'll be on the science curriculum on a couple of classrooms going forward. I'll make sure to give credit where's it's due if they try and thank me for it.

    Starsector does spaceship factories really well: Spaceships are 3D printed (at least at major shipyards) using factories which were in turn printed by robots printed by a "nanoforge", and due to this 3D printed construction a brand new spaceship significantly cheaper than overhauling using new or spare parts.

    I've been thinking of a standard modeling for my main faction's ships in my sci-fi 'verse, where shipbuilding is much like constructing a Typhoon-class sub: you build pressure hulls of various internal configurations, bring them together with a structural skeleton and just have the exterior hull be an optionally pressurized outer shape with external systems going through the outer skin of the ship. The number of interior hulls would determine the weight class of a ship, with single-hull ships being churned out in weeks.

    I always assumed a space empire would have something like the Venetian Arsenal at their disposal.
    Yes, it might take years to make one vessel. But all the work is pre-done and they can finish whatever is needed from the premade parts within days.

    I loved the exo squad.. and i loved the exo suit toys. Alot of robotech gundum knock offs but it was perfect scale for 3.5 JI goes. Was a lot of fun to mix them up and play

    Small note: ships operating far away from the sun still very much need radiation protection, against cosmic rays. They are far more dangerous than the ones coming from the sun 😮 Great video once again!

    I love the shout out to Exo Squad. SPOILER ALERT.
    The Pirate Clans discovered and colonized much more of the Outer Planets than the Exo Fleet realized so when the Pirate Clans joined the Exo Fleet they had a massive influx of resources and manufacturing capacity. The Pirate Clans were also way more organized, disciplined and technologically than anyone ever knew. Not only that Mars got pretty badly damaged when Able Squad blew up the Neosapien growing facility at the end of season one on Mars and thus the Neosapiens lost a lot of production capacity.
    This allowed the Exofleet to recover.

    Yet another really interesting video Isaac and Team! This is an interesting look at our near future in cis-lunar and then solar-system wide space development.
    I think there will be alot of (Expanse) belter-style type of ships that are one-offs and purpose made for a singular task, and theta look like frames with boxy compartments within and and engine of some sort strapped on and RCS maneuvering thrusters around the outside, just like in The Expanse..

    Analog actually had an article 25 or 30 years ago about the construction of spacecraft in vacuum using 3D printing technology. Primarily on the Lunar surface.

      I remember an article about 'double wides' in space... That and the starseed habitat.
      I wish I could get a bundle of better science speculation articles, from the galaxy before man to terraforming Venus to defeating the son of Andrew... with a six kilometer tall tower for dehumidifying some of south Florida... Disney should have got that done!

    One dead-simple manufacturing process that's missing here is, making spherical shells by blowing bubbles of molten metal, and letting them cool. Then just weld on an engine and an airlock, maybe some windows if you don't want to rely on external sensors too much, et voila, spaceship.
    [Can't remember what story I read this in, but it was *not* my own original idea.]

      Well now that's super dope. Does that even have a size limit? I mean at some point the gas will start collapsing under its own gravity too much to be useful, but we are talking thousands if not tens of thousands of km in diameter.
      You can surround it with a swarm of mirrors to avoid destructive thermal gradients & control the cooling. Might even be able to heat treat. Maybe use a blast of cold air from the inside, but idk about that.

      @@virutech32 - I think the limit would be smaller, because you can only inflate it until the metal cools and hardens. Good point about temperature gradients though; probably better to do it in the shadow of a moon, planet, or asteroid, so the sun isn't heating one side [and one side only].

      @@0mn1vore If you have a mirror shell or swarm then you can keep it from cooling down or even add more heat. Diffential heating might also be part of the forming process to create different more complex shapes.

    Spaceships would likely be built on the surface of a planet or at the very least be built in an artificial atmosphere in space. We build sea faring ships on land (or dry docks if they are really large) to avoid hazards and cost of building them in the water. We prioritize our habitat over the vehicles habitat during construction. Expecting spaceships to be built in open space from workers working in spacesuits is akin to expecting ships (water) to be built in the ocean by workers working in scuba gear.
    I’d imagine there would eventually be ways to make it efficient however I find it unlikely that the efficiency of building a spaceship on the surface and flying it to space won’t progress even faster.

    Regarding the latency at the 6:03 min mark... I think it could also be possible to have a predictionsystem built into the computersoftware that negates the latency. So the simulation takes realtimeinformation and just calculates it 1 second into the future... that would create a Environment for the User that feel lagfree.... if you can built spaceships in Spacedocks... I am sure you could do that if you want to avoid AI-controlled constructionbots

    Realistically, I can imagine massive ship building and space infrastructure being done at a convenient Lagrange point that uses material from the moon for its low cost of getting material into space and avoid space clutter around earth.
    Refining lunar materials is going to require lots of energy which may preferably be done at L4 or L5 Lagrange points where continouse 24/7 (figurative) sunlight provides space based solar power that can be a combination of solar PV and concentrated solar thermal.
    Automated AI robots would do the vast majority work and human crew could mostly monitor and telework wuth low latency from inside a well shielded artifical asteroid constructed from otherwise less useful materials launched from the moon.
    Lunar material launch systems might use a spinlaunch platform, a magnetic induction launch rail, and lunar skyhook to launch buckets of raw materials to space.
    Each benefit from no Lunar atmosphere and low lunar escape velocity.

      More Lagrange points will need to be mapped out for other worlds.

      @@marrqi7wini54 for sure further down the road. But with the moon and earth system to develop and the considering moon's resources and low gravity and no atmosphere, I see major development around Mars system much further down the road. Mars is also further away, and while it still gets usable sunlight, it's is less light per sq meter of collection area than earth orbit about the sun.
      Jupiter system and beyond, is even less useful sun wise for langerian points, but they have Trojans asteroids. But if we see asteroids and energy and low gravity as what's important, then we have the asteroid belt as a better source of materials for space construction than Mars or Jupiter system at about 500 years out.
      Venus is relativly close to earth and gets even better wattage per sq meter but I don't see mining it as practical given the thick hellish atmosphere, no moon, and a mass comparable to earth. And I find it dificult to see humanity take interest in Mercury in a large scale within 500 years considering how close it is to the sun in relation to earth and the intense heat and long long long Mercurian nights. But who knows. Maybe launch systems might launch material off Mercury and light or solar wind sails can deliver materials to stations further away from the sun.
      I think there's much to do in the Earth moon system over the next 500 Years, asuming we don't send ourself back to the dark ages or
      pay attention to herbal population reductionist. We need people to build and support themselfs and the infrastructure that elevates humanity to a true space ferrying species.

    In terms of replicating ships, since any long term vessel will have to have on-board facilities to repair or replace every single component aboard ship in order to ensure continued functioning, it would make the most sense to go with the "worm" approach I think.
    Just have the ship slowly build a second ship protruding from it's "nose" as it goes, until the second ship is complete, then cut the connection between the two and now you have 2 perfectly functional and usable vessels.
    I honestly can't imagine any system, short of some kind of either nanobot (SG-1 Replicators) or replicator (from Star Trek), would be able to surpass the "worm" in efficiency and versatility (since most other construction styles leave you tethered to a planet or moon and hard infrastructure, rather than having everything you need with you at all times).

    I think smaller spaceships, the equivalent of tugboat or a small yacht, might be built on an assembly line like cars or small aircraft today but anything really like, like a space freighter/tanker, would likely be built our of prefabricated modules that are assembled in orbit. All the key sections, like the reactor, thrusters, living quarters, cargo bays, hangers and whatever, would just be these large blocks that are fitted together then the hull would be built around them.

    Regarding colonizing locations, perhaps the ship building facilities can crank out a ship, say once per month. Each month you have a new ship launching towards the next destination. Each ship can then have different amounts of various supplies. Between each ship, the resources required at the new destination could be varied so the first few ships have relatively even amounts of supplies, and later ships have greater quantities of raw materials, or purely be passenger vessels.
    Along this massive ship train, it could relay signals between ships and the origin, allowing relatively reliable communication despite the great distances and obeying the laws of physics.

    There was a legend that far out in the sea, travelers came to an island on which was a statue whose base was inscribed *NE PLUS ULTRA.*
    Its meaning was ambiguous, but the statue, which showed a saint facing back in the direction they had come from, sternly holding up a hand to bar further travel, made its meaning clear: *YOU MUST GO NO FURTHER THAN HERE.*
    Others tell the story differently, though: that the statue's plinth does indeed read *NE PLUS ULTRA,* but since the saint is facing outward, and his finger is pointed forward, its meaning is equally clear: *WE REACHED NO FURTHER THAN HERE.*

    If the factory is in space and the ships aren't made to land and take off from planets, they could be made way simpler than most people think. Personally I would love to have a junker ship going between colonies colecting reciclable materials.

    When I was in high school there was a housing development going up nearby. I watched them take like 3 months to build the office, and 24 hours for each subsequent house. There wasn't any real difference in size

    For the most common ships I can see modular designs being standardized and automated.
    Custom craft would cost a rediculas amount but still.
    I also think the ship yards will be able to help manufacture other shipyards and stations. (Creating logarithmic growth)

    Are you going to watch the eclipse this Saturday around 12-1:30pm? It'd make for a great video for you to post. If you do , make sure to have a welding helmet or eclipse glasses to look at it directly, or you can stand with your back to it and do that trick with the cards.

    Everyone wants to see humans in space. It's exciting! It's inspirational!
    But...
    Tomorrow's ship builders AND even human beings aren't going to be a "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" building site.
    Already AI and automation take-up factory space, and often more, or very precise engineering. Humans will take up augmentation, then mechanical replacement, even with human thought algorithms.
    Manufacturing will eventually be a projection of substance. It's far out, but true.
    We just give way to true technology.

    Self replication is dangerous and inefficient, but as many people forget. We actually already have self replicating nano-machines what are literally us. A living beings. But advanced technology has advantage that those machines can be assembled by external replicators, what make everything safer and simpler.
