But anyway Pog is exceptionally good on almost every parcours that I still consider him as the favorite, but VDP is much closer than some think. So, more with Si, I guess.

Broken bike and wrist but fortunately insured via British Cycling who after some time recovered my costs including compensation for a holiday I could enjoy due to the broken wrist. It really depends how much Pogaçar is marked out during the race. Van der Poel has mugged him at Milan San Remo and other races so don’t rule him out. If the climbing favourites really hammer each of the longer climbs they might be able to crack him. I still don’t think it’s just a two horse race, but if Pogaçar does get it, Strade Bianche, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the Giro, the Tour and the worlds road race in one season is quite some palmarès…

Just bought a new carbon gravel bike, terrified of it getting damaged or even stolen ( not that it will ever leave my hands out on a ride) looked around for insurance, tried to use a very well known bike insurer who's website payment system kept crashing, saw a mention of GCN insurance in one of Simon's videos now the new bike is insured via GCN with the added bonus of some third party insurance included ( simples) er oh, no meercats used.
I don’t really see how anyone can be priced out of cycling when you have these community bike projects / charities. I think the real issue is lack of safe infrastructure. It feels like people are basically using price as an excuse when asked why they don’t cycle; because they maybe don’t want to admit that they’re mostly just afraid. That’s not to say they wouldn’t be justified in feeling that way. I feel more scared now than I used to because of the bigger cars, distracted / angry drivers you see everywhere. In terms of the cycle to work scheme, I think it should be abolished, and the government simply get rid of VAT from bikes and accessories. Plus maybe an additional subsidy for certain types of bikes to make sure the discount is as big as it can be under cycle to work.

In Canada I have my bike insured through my house insurance which essentially only covers theft and damage when stored. I'd want insurance that covers damage while using the bike and/or when the bike is away from home.
Regarding the quill stem adapter and Dan's question about structural integrity of materials when pressure is applied from the outside (clamping) vs. the inside: Carbon fiber has very high tensile strength, and works great as material for building pressure vessels. It does not work well when subjected to pressure from outside however, as demonstrated by the OceanGate Titan submersible, which was constructed from a carbon fiber composite and imploded in June 2023 while diving towards the Titanic wreck site.
Have to agree that VdP has long odds against winning, if for no other reason than Evenepoel has beaten him convincingly head-to-head already this year. The races he has won, did not have Evenepoel and Pogacar in them. It's hard to believe he would have won those races if all of the "best" riders were in the field. It's not that he isn't great, it's that it is all about the competition (as you pointed out).
look 2023 San Remo, PR, RVV and E3 and worlds. He has a fair shot at it and even likes that there are more favourites as it takes pressure off him with reacting

The problem for Van der Poel is that he could survive the long climb in a bigger group, but he won't be able to respond to Tadej attacking full gas 50 meters in front of him.
In this race the 3 big guys will be watching each other all the time. Wireless communication and sending teammates up front will not be of importance. What is important is being able to stay with the other 2, goes for all the 3. The climbs seem to favor Pogacar, but I am not putting any money... Any of them winning is OK with me.
So i have had insurance, however i started it 8 years ago & it was 6 years ago they contacted to me to say it was now void. This was 4 weeks after being stabbed in London. Considering that both Pogačar and Evenepoel are there, I would put both of them ahead of van der Poel (yes, that's how you write his surname). I would give Pogačar the edge here considering the steep kicker, assuming he is in form on the day.

Regarding the stem adapter: Materials have different properties when pressure loads them in tension (expanding a steel tube from the inside) vs compression (clamping it from the outside). For example, Carbon is great for spokes, because they are loaded in tension, but a total bodge for a submarine. I wouldn't be necessarily panicking about clamping it that way, but you'd have to analyze it and do the calculations under those specific conditions to make sure it was strong enough. So long as the wall thickness of the quill stem is sufficient, it's probably fine. If you're nervous, it's probably a smart idea to put an allen bolt or something of the sort into the old quill stem so that it's compressing against the bolt (just like how your stem should be clamping overtop of your compression plug on a carbon steer tube instead of on the empty tube.). If you used the original bolt hole from the quill stem to hold the top cap on your new stem down, that would take care of that and I'd guess that it's reasonably safe, but, I want to stress that I can't say for sure without doing the math and this does not constitute professional advice.
