I love "chicken math"! It is a real thing! We started almost 1 year ago with 5 in mind. (One for each grandchild.) So far, we only have 10! 😆❤🐣🐔🐤
I love hearing the roosters, I grew up in Puerto Rico until the age of 16 and my grandma had chickens. Nostalgia
I like the dish tubs for easy cleaning. Great idea 💡 👍🏼 I also like the ducks and chickens together ❤️
I hope you read this. When I was a kid back at the ranch we had windmill power that charge up large batteries (or cell) and it powered up the lights in the house and yard light. Wind power also so pumped water into livestock tanks that kept our livestock watered. Our ranch was large so we also had lakes and a lot of pasture. Maybe I better change that to a river running through our ranch. That is about all I remember. I was about three or four years old.
We’re starting a little hobby farm, but this really makes me think it would be nice to automate whatever aspects we can.

Lovely coop, great job, not sure if you've looked them up before but we have an automatic door on our coop, battery operated it opens at 6am and closes depending on time of year, summer around 10pm, winter 6pm.
The ducks only go in the coop to lay eggs and if it is very very cold. Otherwise they stay outside.
The coop looks awesome and your flock looks so healthy.

I like your ideas and especially the wash basins for inside the laying compartments. I had pretty much secured my coop and chicken run except for no electric fencing. I have an adjacent run I want to use for turkeys and/or peacocks. I remember I had made a way for irrigation water to snake back and forth when it was a garden. I need to block up those low areas so nothing can get from the unsecured future peacock/turkey area into the chicken run area.
I have nesting hawks and owls in the cottonwoods next to my chicken run so I also put netting over top. I want to find out about your self cleaning duck pond/waterer next.

I have a whole colony of rock chucks (wood chucks, ground hogs, marmots) in my pasture and love to watch them graze and then run for cover when they see me. It keeps me in good humor and they stay in pretty good shape considering what they have to work with. So instead of offing them I live and let live. Not saying that concept is for everybody and when they start to eat my garden this summer I may change my mind pretty fast.

I was going to build a coop.
After looking at your design I think I'm going to purchase a small shed instead.
What size shed is yours?
Also do you get snow were your at? If so how do you keep your chickens warm in the winter and how is there egg producing in the winter months with no windows?

@@curtisworthington2241 it is 10x12I think. Yes I get snow here. Chickens do fine in the winter without any heat, as long as they can get dry and draft free. Chickens are raised clear up in Alaska and do fine. If you are worried, there are breeds that more cold resistant such as brahmas. Egg production ground to a halt in the winter. You could put a light in the coop to help with that. My door is open 24-7 so as soon as it is light out, they go outside so windows would make much of a difference.

Several good ideas. U can put an automatic door with solar, that u can ser to open/close with a timer or with the sun.
I only had a carpet flap over my chickens door, to keep draft down. I did run a pygmy goat with my birds & except for mice living under the coop, never had intruder. Best fortune

Love it...."crick", haven't heard it called that in so long. LOL People would yell at me and say it's called a "creek" when I moved south...that and "pop", they would say "soda". Great job!
😂😂 I didn't even notice. Fyi if it small enough to jump across, its a crick, if you can't jump it, it is a creek. If you are unsure, look for a tire laying in it. It is a crick for sure if you see one. 😆

Thank you, it has been 2 years now and I have yet to loose one to a predator. Duck math may be a thing too. It is so tempting to try and get a bunch of cool breeds.
Well I built my run like five ft high and I use some existing trees for post . That way don't rot then I cut some cedar trees 4 to 6 inches round laid them on the ground parallel nail the bottom of chicken wire to them. But I haven't finished yet I'm having to stoop over to open the door let them out in morning same thing in the evening to lock them at night I use poultry wire on top for netting. But I'm gonna fix this problem with sliding door with a pulley system so I don't have to go into the run twice a day to let them in and out just pull on a rope to raise the door opening . the nest box I've got access to without going in the run or going in side the coop but also got a door access from outside the run I can enter the coop. I'm not leave any doors open at night I've lost one hen to a fox she didn't go in the coop it was before I got the fenced in run built I didn't do a head count that night my mistake. With the pandemic every thing has doubled in price material wise. I use 2x6s treated lumber for flooring with inch spacing the nest boxes three ft off the flooring I can take a water hose wash the poop out run out on the ground its setting on 8 inch cender blocks . I do like your walk in run better . But to do that would of taken 3 x the material although it would of been nicer I agree. I like Guinea fowl got three at the moment. I plan on building another coop in the future holding off till maybe these prices drop. Move my chicken's to another coop guineas dont like to be handled any way. Nice set up you got thier.

I started with 7 chickens and a small coop and run. Then the run got bigger and got a roof. From there I kicked my husband’s stuff out of the shed and made that the coop with a huge run. Ended up with a rooster so that morphed to hatching eggs. Needed a second coop and run along with a brooder in the mud room. Now I’m up to two incubators and selling baby chicks and you guessed it now working on building another shed with another run! Oh chicken match you devil.

OMG, Chicken math is real. I started with 8 chicks, then 14, now i'm up to 28 and none have even started laying eggs yet. Wife didn't believe it until I showed her your video.
Haha, chicken math is absolutely real. Soon you will think, maybe a couple ducks, how about turkeys? Lets raise broiler chickens. Once you realize how many cool and interesting breeds there are out there, you want them. 😆😆😆
What solor panel and electric fence did u go with ?
How many roosters do you have. I have too many and they start fighting. Also I saw an automatic door that opens and Cog hill farm has a good video.

Hi, which State do you live in? How cold can it get in the winter? I’m up in Northern BC Canada, we can get -40 C in the winter. I’m just setting up my coop and run now and was planning to buy an automatic door but your idea of just leaving it open is a great idea. I’m wondering if our winters are too cold to do that. I’m putting the poultry cloth over the run and coop area too. So you don’t have frozen water problems in winter with the running water duck pond? Great video and ideas. I’m doing solar as well. I live in central Ohio, winter temps can be down into the single digits here in the winter (F). Because I have ducks, they do not go into the coop at night unless it is really cold. So if i had an automatic door they would still be vulnerable. My pond has frozen over the top once during a polar vortex but my water never stopped flowing. I have the charge controller for the solar panel but i do not have an inverter. I have a electric fence charger that runs off DC and my light is a yard light I modified that also runs off DC. Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "poultry coop" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across - Machaaldity Coop Blaster - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.

If you secure that 'hanging' ladder to the roof & ground (with two, short chains & I-bolt(s). Little to no sway should interest the girls.
Where did you get the netting from on the top of your run? How did you secure it? Is strong enough to keep raccoons out?

In the winter time, do you have any heat source in your coop and if so, how do you run it?
No heat, chickens do not need heat in their coops as long as they are dry and draft free. They are amazingly hardy animals.
They only need heat until they feather , if you have harsh winter's make sure you have plenty of clean dry straw and keep them in on super nasty days. A window is a great addition for sunlight to help warm it up other then that I brood chicks in my 3 season room lol and during bad Michigan winter's I built my coop close enough to the garage to run an electric cord to plug the heat lamp. Birds have been known to roost and the legs freez when you come in to feed in the Am you will have legless birds fluttering on the floor .... That is not a joke !! They rely on you to live so good luck and research as much as you can it helps.

I’m sure ur chickens are very happy that run is awesome! But watch out for raccoons they can get thru that net & it’ll be a massacre ☹️ I know personally.. I use a door now, but they have timer operated doors pretty cheap, & maybe ur chickens might like a rounder roost, it’s natural for them to roost in trees, so I use limbs.. anyway, food for thought.. I guess I don't have chicken math ...I just have utilitarian math and see that I need more chickens for my garden clearing work and now I'm not sure I want to slaughter all the meat ones.
You system is really well self-contained though. All that front end work(along with work along the way while learning) has made it much easier for you now. All you need now is a solar door-closer and door-opener for morning and night.
Curious question too just in case so I don't forget---did the local township change your tax evaluation after taking down the old barn and putting up all the coop/fencing?

"Official Rules for Counting Chickens."
Are sure you are counting your birds correctly? There are specific rules that apply:
1. You do not count any eggs in the incubator because you don't count your chickens before they hatch.
2. You don’t count chickens that were given as a gift because they were a present and are more properly considered a gift rather than a chicken.
3. You do not count any bird under 18 weeks old because they are too young to lay eggs so they are considered juveniles rather than chickens.
4. You don't count bantams because bantams are considered bantams rather than chickens.
5. You don't count ornamental birds because they are ornamental and are considered yard art, folk art, or fine art rather than chickens.
6. You don’t count birds beyond laying age because they’re retired and don’t lay eggs and are considered retirees rather than chickens.
7. You don’t count birds in molt because they’re are in molt and missing feathers so cannot be properly considered as complete chickens.
8. You don’t count males because males are for the production of meat and count as a food source rather than chickens.
9. You don’t count males even if they’re not destined for meat productions because they are protectors of the flock and are more accurately considered guard dogs rather than chickens.
10. You don’t count laying hens because they produce eggs and thus are more accurately described as a food source rather than chickens.
11. You don’t count sick or injured birds because they are sick or injured and their disposition is in question so they go on the injured or sick list not on your list of chickens.
12. You don’t count birds that are for sale or possibly for sale because they belong or will belong to someone else.
Thus, if you follow the rules (and it is always good to follow the rules) you may only count healthy full size female chickens that are not in molt and not a gift and are of laying age but not laying.

get the timed door at Omlet. It opens and closes at the times you program it to. Those defenses will not protect your flock.
Zero problems in 2 years. Also my ducks will not go inside at night, they would be exposed even if I had an automatic door. My system so far has worked even better than i expected.

My ducks do not go in at night like chickens do. My ducks would still be vulnerable. That is why I made it more important to secure the run, not the coop.
